If you're claiming that these houses exist solely for investment purposes, then why not invest the money in something else? If you have millions of dollars to either outright buy the house, or make a down payment/pay years of a mortgage on a place you're never going to live in, why don't you just invest that money some way? It's not like they're making a killing on these houses. I always read the real estate section of the LA Times when I'm browsing through their news, and a lot of these houses sit on the market for years, or barely sell for more than like the inflation-adjusted cost.
Also, some of these are built from the ground up, so clearly they are custom homes built on the whim of some celebrity's taste, and not to lease out to some jackass.
I also don't believe that Marky Mark is like renting an apartment somewhere while he counts his rent money on his 15 bedroom house. These celebrities have to live somewhere nice that has privacy.
