Is there a quick resource for understanding the GoT backstory? Just something that will get me up to speed and fill in all the gaps. I haven't read the books either.

The Mad King was mad, wanted to burn all of King's Landing with wildfire a la Cersei did with the Sept of Baelor when he was about to lose it during Robert's Rebellion, and Jaime stabbed him in the back, earning the title "Kingslayer".
Dany was spirited away to Essos before Robert could have her executed since he wanted to eliminate the Targaryen bloodline as revenge and so they couldn't grow up and try and make a claim.
Jon is actually Ned's nephew, not his bastard. His sister ran away with/kidnapped by Prince Rhaegar who impregnated her, which ultimately led up to Robert's Rebellion.

Not that anon and while I do admit that no I wouldn't have, the parallels they've built up between Jon and Sansa and Ned and Cat do make it seem like while they don't get along at first, stuff can build, especially since almost like Ned and Cat they're mostly strangers to each other.
Jon and Arya grew up together but actually treated each other as brother and sister and played and everything as such, that's weirder and harder to make romantic in the short time they have.

However, as they grew older, Aerys grew jealous of Tywin, who had a very commanding and domineering persona, as Aerys was the heir to throne, and felt Tywin was overstepping his bounds.
SO, Aerys was looking to slight and provoke Tywin as much as possible thirty years down the line when his heir, Jaime, offered himself as a kingsguard candidate. Taking his heir (Kingsguard cannot inherit, father any children, and serve for life) was the perfect way to snub Tywin while also securing a fantastic swordsman.

She has Joffrey to ensure that she will never again be powerless. In the show they twist it so he's 'out of her control', but in the books she orders him around, especially at Blackwater, and he obeys.
Joffrey becomes her golden boy after his death. She idealizes him and basically starts grooming Tommen to become Joffrey 2.0 in AFFC. That's why she gets Marg arrested and sends Loras to take Dragonstone, because she's molding Tommen into what she wants him to be and keeps mistaking the two genuinely well-meaning Tyrells for doing the smae thing as her.

Well there is no continuation to her plotline in the north that is true. Yet I don't see what else she might be doing. Her assassin ninja powers need to be concealed otherwise won't make sense to us viewers and if she fails she'll only die or get captured. Well the brotherhood are going North, shouldn't meet much in the way considering they're in the Riverlands already and the North is united. And their big concern is fighting the Walkers which Arya probably won't care about for now.
I think she'll trek through stuff trying to go South, after killing a lot of Freys and their soldiers and maybe helping the other Riverland Houses rise up to take the Riverlands back, kinda taking the some of the Brotherhood's mission and Lady Stoneheart's. With Walder dead the Twins and the Freys will be easier to take down.
Arya can't take down all of the Frey's army by herself, or kill the dude's entire family and then just leave the Riverlands in chaos as the remaining Houses figure out who's following who now. Gathering and getting them to attack gets the Riverlands involved in stuff. Maybe Edmure is even freed and can then kneel to Jon as his King like he did Robb, helping Jon out..
Of course they could offscreen almost all of this and just have a raven come that says the Riverlands rose up, Freys are dead, Edmure's free, he's joining their cause for the wars to come.
