I need to rant about this for a second:
The battle was an absolutely atrocious misrepresentation of medieval battles on so many levels. I can get behind Arthur Dayne's dual wielding (even if it's a bit too flourishing for my tastes) because it's a fairly accurate representation of Bolognase longsword technique (even if left hand drawing of a left scabbard sword is wonky), but this battle was awful:
- holding a hill means you hold the hill and wait for the opposing force to wear themselves up going up it. Ramsay ordering a charge down is retarded beyond belief.
- ordering a cavalry counter charge is stupidly wasteful; horses are much more expensive to obtain and maintain than a man at arms, they generally will not charge into a massed, disciplined formations, and getting caught in a melee deprives the cavalry of its two greatest assets (speed and endurance)
- no barding. Understandable given budget and the general lack of stocky modern horses, but still.
- no shields. People going into battle carry shields.
- too many swords. Swords are almost exclusively secondary weapons in time periods that GoT is trying to portray. Spears are cheap, relatively easy to manufacture, and superior in pitched battles.
- Davos charging on foot. Goddamn is that stupid.
- Arrows are not as effective as they seem; mail with padding is stronk.
- Surrounding your enemies and not leaving a way for them to flee (as men are wont to do, after which you then charge with cavalry) is such a monumental fuck up that it makes Stannis' last stand look like a masterstroke of strategy.
