There's also no way he would have won against the vale showing up at any point (even before) the battle. But that was probably to Jon's advantage that the Vale showed up when they did as Ramsay would have likely pulled back and waited for a siege.

The shot of Davos during the sunrise, the moment Jon gets trampled under all the soldiers, Daenarys on Drogon and one of the best shots in all of the series: Jon running in to battle. When Jon was being trampled, I could hardly breath. That gives you a sense of how claustrophobic and chaotic this battle really was. The scene when Jon slowly walks towards Ramsay, blocking his arrow and then beats him to a pulp, followed by him being eaten by his own dogs - just amazing. This episode made that boring thing we got last week worth it. Probably the best episode of the whole series. 11/10

I know exactly what happened in those episodes and I'll explain what didn't make sense and let you direct me to scenes that explain them if you like? I know they don't exist however so there's no point in me doing this but whatever:
1. Jon's initial plan is tactically inept, he tells sansa that battles have been won against greater odds but neglects to mention that this was almost always a result of superior training, superior weaponry or a superior tactical position, all three of which ramsay actually has over him.
2. Ramsay's plan is actually even worse than this somehow, reminder that he literally killed hundreds of his own men with his own arrows so that he could implement his epic "surround them with pikes" formation. He should have either stayed in the castle or used his superior numbers in a more tactical manner.
3. speaking of the pike formation, this never should have worked, all of those infantry had to run about 300m and form a solid circular wall against an essentially similar number of men and a giant. It wasn't even a charge, everyone just ran with their spears up till they got in position, if at any point the wildings had simply decided to meet them the shield wall would have had huge gaping holes in it
4. Wun Wun breaks through the wall in one scene but immediately after that the gap in the wall has mysteriously disappeared and Wun Wun is back to just kind of standing there.
5. Why does sansa not tell jon about the vale army she has coming? Is she not sure that it will arrive and doesn't want to give false hope? She seems pretty confident that they should wait for more men so she's portrayed as knowing they're on their way. The only reason not to do this is to have them come in and save the day but this is boring as fuck. If the issue is that sansa needed the wildings and northmen to lure ramsay into a trap then she still should have told jon this plan, it would have saved almost literally thousands of lives on both sides.

Arya's arc has been terrible and embarrassingly illogical. They demonstrated that she learned absolutely nothing during her training before having her get stabbed and then immediately recover. They made her appear pitifully incompetent and then the HotU just lets her walk right out of there? What?
The writers have completely destroyed Jaime's entire redemption arc by keeping him infatuated with Ceraei, and bringing the Blackfish back after talking him up as a real fighter only to have him die off screen in a major departure from the books was lame.
Up until this episode, there was nothing interesting about Daenarys' arc either, even though it should have been cool to see her in Vaes Dothrak. It just kinda fell flat.
Jon's storyline has been decent, but his resurrection was underwhelming for how long we've been waiting, and it took Davos suddenly caring enough about Jon, basically a stranger to him, out of nowhere to suggest something as outlandish as resurrection. Why should hr have any investment in the first place?
Dorne really wasn't salvageable after last season, but that doesn't mean that it makes any sense that a bunch of bastard women took out the entire Martell line and are presumably supposed to have been granted ruling powers and approval from the rest of the kingdom for some reason.
The Kingsmoot was another "home run" scene that they managed to make only so-so. He admits to regicide and then gets elected anyway? Not even the ironborn would be okay with that. Eurone himself in the show just doesn't have any of the charisma that he should have to swing everyone to his side like that.
A few things this season have been decent, but all in all, most of the motivations and plot have been totally illogical if you step back and examine them.

I think people get too upset when characters make stupid decisions. When, in reality, poor decision making is par for the course.
Who knows why Ramsay didn't back up. Did he only have a few arrows left? Was there much space to back up into? Did he think the several men pointing longbows at him might shoot him if he starts to retreat? Or maybe, as his character implies, the first couple arrows were overconfident and by the time Jon had closed the distance he figured his best option was to try to loose as many as he could in a panic?
