Then NOPE, it's another miss. And you see how close Rickon is to Jon, and you have just enough time to think "he's gonna make it!" before surprise arrow kills him.

The spectacle of the battle was pretty impressive, but there weren't real stakes (we know Jon isn't going to just die again, we know Stannis's discovery of the toy has to pay off, we know Littlefinger's army has to come back, and Rickon's fate is decided right at the start). And while the battle looked impressive, I honestly got kinda bored after a while. Blackwater was great not just because of the spectacle, but because of how it actually told multiple stories and showed multiple perspectives within this single battle, as opposed to just focusing mainly on one character throughout.

Well the whole point of a being able to hold a castle is having the men to defend it. Bolton sallied out and his army was outright destroyed.
Giants aside, if this was a real life situtation and a commander sallied out and lost his entire army, the castle would quickly fall to a follow up assault. A few token guards he left behind is not enough to hold it.

Ok, Ill play this out.
You are Lord Bolton. You hold Winterfell with 6000 fighting men. Jon Snow has committed an army of 3000 men to attack winterfell and reclaim it as his own. You either:
A) Sit behind the walls. Any direct assault can be easily repelled, because defending a castle is a huge force multiplier, and you already outnumber him 2 to 1. Thus, the attacking force will be forced to surround Winterfell, and starve you out. This could take years, exactly the point that you people keep clinging to. Even if the Vale shows up, they still do not have enough forces to take Winterfel in a direct assault, and must siege (for years).
B) You sally out of your castle immediately and attempt to destroy the attacking army. You leave a skeleton crew behind to man the castle and commit most of your army to battle. You already have a 2 to 1 advantage, the high ground, and can easily exploit the Stark's honor/retardation. What possibly could go wrong? Once your troops are fully committed to battle, a large Vale force arrives and completely routes/destroys your army.
You are now back in Winterfel with the 50 men you left behind, while the enemy now has 4000 or more men. The castle will fall immediately to a direct assault. Since the show is only using 60 minute blocks of time, they condensed it and just used a giant to break down the door and advance the plot quicker.
