"Less happened" is a relative term. Things that happened in season 1 had big consequences and effected how characters behaved as the show moved forward. Come season 6, entire noble houses are being wiped out in single episodes and not mentioned again. Characters are killed off by the dozen with no real impact or result and the same is true of character brought back from the dead.
A loss of attention to detail and a gradual drop in the quality of the writing have begun to cripple the show even as the actors do their best and the budget keeps getting bigger.
