It happened this way for us because we're watching from Bran's linear timeline, in which he goes back, via visions, to Hodor as a child.
It's a paradox, as viewed from Current Bran's perspective, but it was always that way. There's just another, separate timeline that we're not privy to where it happened for a different reason.
That's how paradoxes work. They're all based on whose eyes you view them through, which is ironic given Bran's abilities.
