It makes sense, it's just the worst kind of time travel you can introduce.
Like, there are two main varieties of time travel: change the past to change the future, and everything is written. The former is where altering past events leads to an alternate future where everything is different, and maybe there are even a whole shitload of parallel timelines based on what happened. In this type of time travel, choices matter. It's closer to how time travel would actually work based on our understanding of quantum physics and the nature of time.
Then there's the latter type, where everything is one big loop that relies on characters from the future going back to keep it stable. This is like the third Harry Potter book/movie where they went back in time and caused the events that personally happened to them earlier in the day. This type of time travel is absolute shit because it means everything was already preordained and self-reliant, and therefore choice is a myth. Basically there is no tension because no one is actually choosing anything because it was all planned out by the universe and everyone just acts out their parts.
Game of Thrones has opted for the latter variety.
