It's almost as if they want more people north/at the wall, but that makes their attack on it even more difficult (or does it?).
Could they just want more bodies sooner on their journey south (assuming that they can just turn most of them into their own army)? But why would they want that, it would suggest there's a rush or that they don't currently have sufficient numbers.
