Preston started being good when he has risen above the overview of ASOIAF text (something that has been done for years by many people, and circlejerked for years - westeros.org has more than a hundred R+L=J threads), and did what nobody has done before him (except for RLJers seeking for the name "Lyana") and analyzed GRRM's other works, finding themes, characters, and concepts similar to what is seen in ASOIAF, finding the underlying principles of GRRM's writing that explain why characters like Ned, Robb or Stannis die, while Sansa, Sam or Theon survive all hardships.
This "discovery", so to speak, has shaken the ground under many 'theories', none of which tried to cross-analyze GRRM's works (except for, again, Lyanna theories). The reason he's throwing all those curve balls is not so much to vindicate this or that theory but to let people think about the wider context and the theme of the work, and to provoke discussion around more established theories. In one interview D&D mentioned that when they first met with GRRM, GRRM asked them if they knew who Jon's mother was, they made a guess and GRRM told them it was right. So I guess whatever ends up being confirmed by the show will be the same shit on the books, so no, Ashara is not Jon's mother, that one is clear.
