also dual wielding wasnt used historically? yes it was. it was popular in duels and actually really practical against stronger opponents because it gives you extra defense strength + push and its ideal for ambidextrous people. the easiest way you'd defeat the Mountain is with dual wielding, not with sword and a shield. it is risky if you aren't extremely skilled, which arthur dayne is.
dual wielding isn't however of much use in war and any sort of military formations for reasons you can imagine.

Good question. The reason is if you have a full weapon in another hand, you are using more energy to swing. If it's smaller, it is going to be faster as well, and you can sneak it beyond the guard of someone who is just using one sword for example to deliver a cut to them and then pull it back very quickly. By contrast a full size weapon cannot move as fast, especially if it's in your off hand which is weaker an clumsier for most people.
However if you're skilled it can turn aside strikes very fast, allowing you to riposte with your main weapon.
Having two longswords is certainly possible but doesn't really make that much sense unless you're 1v1 fight me irl nutthin personnel dueling.
