The writing in this episode was truly shit. You can see that they are now in full fan-fic mode. I'm no GRRM dick sucker, but the man actually bothers to set up the situations in his books; the deaths and drama are often the result of a series of build ups and events that hint at what is to come and actions end up having consequences.
In the show, things happen because they "have to" for the plot, especially if they need some "shock". The books, whilst harsh, rarely have something that is truly out of left field, unlike the show (e.g. see the Ramsay kills his dad randomly because he's the big baddy for the season). The writers know the general"plot" of the story, but have no idea how to execute it in an exciting way. It all just feels one note and hugely telegraphed - oh Rickon is the gift for Ramsay? He's done for. Umber guy being a (out of character) shit and handing him over? Gonna get rekt.
