This causes Lyanna, who was friendly to Hodor, to distance herself from Robert after a bad first impression. Robert turns to other women to cope with not having the favor of the woman he loves, but his whoring drives her away further into the arms of Rhagar.

He isn't that minor of a character. He's just been under utilized because of his capabilities and also 1 year absence. Other characters have noted his size and he plays a larger role in the books.
The most recent revelation was the Wyllis scene. In that, the kids want him to spar because he "would be unstoppable" but we also heard Ned preach to Benjen to keep his shield or he'll ring his head like a bell.
I want to like GoT. I really do. I made it five chapters into the first book. I watched the first couple of episodes. I love fantasy, politics, and swords and sorcery, but I just can't get into it.
Any tips? I don't think I've ever wanted to like something more... but just don't.

Not sure, honestly. Maybe because, as a high fantasy, I except more... outlandishness and magic. It feels very plain and realistic - at least, initially. I hear dragons and wizards show up later, but from what I've seen, it's like an alternative medieval Europe.
Also, as much as I love politics (even fictional politics) I found it hard to keep track of the thirty-five dozen or so kingdoms there are in the universe of the story.
Maybe I should give it another shot, though. I'm willing.
