Hard to say. It could just be lack of familiarity with the timeline of film as an art form that prevented you from realizing how important that movie was, or from appreciating the fact that everything you see on screen is 100% real. It's at least one of the most technically impressive films ever made.

I mean, it was shot in the 60's. They didn't really have much recourse but to just do everything they wanted in the film. They went to Africa and build enormous sets. The production is really incredible.
As for the story, I'm not sure what you could've missed. It's paced slowly, yes, but drama escalates steadily over the course of the film. It's probably more fascinating if you know anything about middle-eastern culture going into it.

First off, I'm a sucker for neo-noir, especially in a high school setting. There's something about applying a melodramatic genre in which characters try to be cool and manipulative and applying it to the high school setting that fits so well.
I don't think I need to argue for how great the cinematography is in this movie, at least not to anyone who's seen it. It's not 10/10 masterful work, but it's perfect for what it needs to be.
JGL has a great performance in it. Actually, everyone does. And the plot is just great and works so well.
I don't know, I flip flop this and Mysterious Skin as my 2000s JGL fixes in my top 4, but everytime I watch this movie I think "yeah, this is definitely up there."

I do admit that I did not completely get the first part. It felt almost like a different film, like a detective noir almost with some almost comedic musings from 223 (or maybe that was my subtitles).
I did love the second part though. I had seen Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in Infernal Affairs before this and he was very good here too. Faye Wong was great too from the first scene to the end, dat dancing to California Dreaming when she was introduced was great scene.
Can't wait to see Fallen Angels and especially in the mood for love now
