yeah

A 24 year repeat of Love And Monsters, Fear Her, Sleep No More, The Curse of the Black Spot, Power of Three, Night Terrors, and Kill The Moon, running constantly with no bathroom breaks, would still be preferable to channel surfing and happening to come across a few stray frames of any Sixth Doctor episode.

re-watched all of Clara episodes a few weeks ago.

honestly not bad. Some terrible episodes, but they were just like the cheezy ones of old. They just don't translate well with the more serious route Dr Who eventually took in series 6
>>
>>64154251
She does.

CONS
*river already had a musical theme, one of marigold's better works, and BF already have a decent relationship with marigold so they should have just got approval to use the cue then arrange it into a proper theme tune
*the brass is a bit shrill, might just be my headphones though

PROS
*actually has an identifiable, hummable melody (huehuehue)
*has more than one section, isn't just the same melody repeated differently ie it has a kind of "middle eight" equivalent

>McGann pretty much reduced to a supporting character in his own series, and in a special anniversary story to boot
>"Zagreus", the thing that had been hyped up and foreshadowed for the last two years, does nothing but run around the TARDIS shouting very loudly
>the story was promoted as a multi-doctor story, but there's only one little scene where Davison, Baker and McCoy are playing the Doctor
>Rassilon reduced to a generic ranting bad guy
>the badly executed “the Vampires weren't bad guys, it was the Time Lords!" retcon
>that scene where McGann talks to an almost incomprehensible recording of Jon Pertwee for no good reason
>being far too long
There are parts of Zagreus that I enjoy, especially the bit with the theme park in the future. As anniversary stories go, I still prefer it to The Light at the End.
But I can't blame the people who just find it awful.
>>
>>64154236
10 used to be my favorite but on further rewatches he seems rather bipolar and melodramatic a lot of the time. Not sure why other people would dislike him though, can't speak for everyone.
>>
>>64154380
I actually LOVE the Rassilon of Zagreus through to The Next Life, but I forget what parts are in what so maybe he wasn't that interesting in Zagreus itself.

Don Warrington is easily my favourite Rassilon.
>>
>>64154380

>Rassilon reduced to a generic ranting bad guy

So that's where Moffat got the idea from.
>>

>>
>>64154380
>As anniversary stories go, I still prefer it to The Light at the End.
Damn, brutal.
>>
>>64154587

No, it was the stuff after the divergent universe arc, which McGann contemplated quitting as the stories were pretty average. Then came the New Eighth Doctor Adventures which McGann loved.

>the story was promoted as a multi-doctor story, but there's only one little scene where Davison, Baker and McCoy are playing the Doctor
They're playing distorted aspects of the Doctor's psyche in a way that blurs the lines between reality and memory. I found this quite effective. Something similar would be a perfect way to do a big multi-Doctor story with the older actors on-screen too.

Warrington is great, but I can't say I enjoyed the way Rassilon was written. BF just stripped the mythical element from him and reduced him to a generic evil scientist/would-be space dictator. Which I suppose could be done in an interesting way, but it wasn't in Zagreus.

>>64154577
It actilually wouldn't surprise me. The way Rassilon gets sent away and ridiculed in Hell Bent reminded me a lot of the ending of Warrington's other BF story, The Next Life.

"The Teselecta. It was used to locate people deemed guilty of crimes who had escaped punishment. After finding them near the end of their respective timelines to avoid changing history, the crew would administer their own punishment, usually in the form of some non-lethal, painful torture. Afterwards they could die in the manner recorded by history."

Oh so Moffit just stole that idea for hell bent. What a cock.

THE DOCTOR:

>Because Christmas, it's not just any party. It's not even about the presents, and no, it's absolutely not about religion. It's about family. And not strictly speaking either. It's about people gathering together, sharing a moment of happiness. It's a party, once a year, every year, that warms the heart of every single person, filling them with laughter, enjoyment, optimism, love. But you've robbed everyone of their memory of Christmas. You stole it from all these children, because everyone was a child, no one was born an adult. Everyone loved Christmas when they were a child, and they still do. You've robbed every human of the joy they felt all these Christmas past, and tomorrow they won't even celebrate it because they forgot about it entirely. Well guess what? If you're the man who stole Christmas, then I'll be the man who saved Christmas. And I'm going to save it now.

Did I get 12 right?

He was great in the few scenes he had in The Five Doctors, especially when punishing Borusa.
In a Fifth Doctor comic from the Eighties, The Tides of Time, he's shown to have evolved beyond his physical form, and he lives in the Matrix monitoring Time with other High Evolutionaries.
Unpopular as it is, I loved him in The End of Time. I thought the idea of introducing him as a mysterious narrator worked very well, the Time Lords' powers were suitably impressive and Dalton absolutely rocked it when he wasn't spitting too much.
There was also his brief appearance in Alan Moore's comic Star Death, pic related.

Did anyone else not really like the Christmas special as a Christmas special? It was a good River/Doctor special, but nothing felt Christmassy about it. There's a sign about carolers on the TARDIS and the Doctor gets antlers, but that's literally it. Take those two bits out and release this in February and it wouldn't feel wrong at all. Other Christmas specials would actually feel out of place released any other time of year.
>>
>>64157129
weren't RTD christmas specials like that?
>>
>>64154113
Source, scum.
>>
>>64157129
It's a fair criticism, but it's not exactly unusual. The only Christmas specials that are about Christmas are A Christmas Carol and The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.
The Christmas Invasion and Last Christmas also feature Christmassy elements very prominently, but that's about it. Pretty much every other Christmas episode is similar to Husbands in that regard.
>>
>>64157129
I'm glad there is varying amount of how Christmasy a special can be.
>>

I didn't really think it was a good episode full stop. It wasn't even a River/Doctor special as much as it was a River special. It was all about her. After writing Clara out in the finale I wanted to see 12 really take the focus but instead we got an episode of The River Song Adventures with 12 as her companion. It was Moffat trying to salvage her shit storyline as he wrote her out and it's obvious he thought this was gonna be his last series and Christmas special.

Makes me wonder what Moffat will come up with for series 10 since he seems out of ideas and now he's sort of written the show into a clean slate.

there was no character development in s8 and s9 either, moffag just changed the character from episode to episode, as it was comfortable and easy for him

Not him, but it's been Clara Who for longer than just S8.
>>
>>64158575
Take a classic story for example, the time meddler, The doctor was barely in that for most of it. The doctor doesn't need to be the center of attention 24/7, even the original writers knew this.
>>
>>64158341
He does to me. As far as grand scheme ideas go anyway. I loved Listen, and some of 12 and Clara's character stuff in S8, and a few scenes here and there in his S9 stuff and all of Heaven Sent but he dropped the ball a bit with the character development in S9 and he ran out of ideas for arcs since way back in S7, he should just ditch arcs completely instead if pushing these half assed ones. Doesn't help that most of the writers he hires are stale and uninspiring either.

No, I liked S8 and her characterization, and actually didn't like how sidelined she was in S9 since it didn't really result in 12 getting any particularly interesting development in S9 or increased focus aside from Heaven Sent and maybe a few other scenes like his speech in The Zygon Inversion. The last 3 episodes of S9 kind of turned this around but understandably centered around the companion departure and after all of that I was looking forward to seeing 12 'be a Doctor'. A good one off special with a standalone story and guest characters would have been ideal for that and for Christmas but instead we got an uneccesary callback to previous series 5 & 6 plotlines from other Doctors eras and River taking centre stage.

So much of this is good, but it's interspersed with so much bad.

Obviously the pop songs used are fucking terrible and ruin the mood. But I also think the Master should have been old and that would have been more motivation for him to make the Doctor look old to spite him. Maybe even drain the Doctor's life force to make himself look young.

So many good ideas existed in this finale, but the execution was fucking shit and we got Gollum Jesus Doctor and mood-ruining pop singles out of it.

Yeah, that, too. But again, if he captured the Doctor and shoved him in a machine that made the Master young and the Doctor old it would have actually been compelling. It would have been part of the Master taking everything away from the Doctor, while also showing a hint of jealousy within his resentment.

I don't hate 10. He was pretty good when the writing was up to snuff, and Tennant can really carry an awful episode most of the time. When it's a good episode with him it's really good.

I'm just going to imagine the Master uses magic to turn him into a house elf. Otherwise it doesn't make much since. 4 got aged heavily in Leisure Hive and didn't shrink into a tiny goblin creature and 11 nearly aged to death and didn't look like that either.

He's saying that if you are still watching then you can't have hated Smith.
It's basically an evolved version of the shitposts about people who dislike the show just being contrarians for the sake of it, because if they are still watching they can't dislike it that much.
The obvious flaws in his argument are:
A) Yes, sometimes people stick with a show even if it's currently shit because they hope it will get better again. This is especially true of Doctor Who fans, since they know how radically the show can change from one season to the next.
B) People might have stopped watching during Smith's run, then started again when they heard there was a new Doctor onboard, and found him more to their liking.
>>

>>
>>64163876
A) But people have been hating the show for 6 years. I mean a year or two, maybe three, but 6? They should just move on.
B) But then they went and rewatched Smith's era to say it's shit. Or worse: they stopped halfway in and didn't bother watching the rest because it's shit without knowing if it is because they didn't watch it.

Holy shit that's hilarious

>But then they went and rewatched Smith's era to say it's shit. Or worse: they stopped halfway in and didn't bother watching the rest because it's shit without knowing if it is because they didn't watch it.
So basically nobody can ever say that a particular era of Doctor Who is shit, because if they watched it all they are to blame for sitting through something they dislike, and if they stopped watching when they had enough of it they can't express any judgement?

Oh they can in the first case, but only if they prove their point.

That doesn't make fucking sense.

You might as well just put "JNT Who", "Saward Who", "Hinchciffle Who" and whoever was the main writer at time

Watched TOTD with family in 2013, and that was fucking awful. Think we watched Eastenders or some shit afterwards, and it was legitimately more interesting.

I can't stomach Downton Abbey for the life of me though, bravo on that.

That's because Doctor Who isn't great drama. It never was.
It's a simple adventure show, and that's its blessing. That's why we like it. That's why it's so successful, and why it's still alive long after other, better shows have died.
However, that is also its curse. It can't be as good as many of the shows that have been born, lived and died during its course.
