The scene where he is shouting in Zygons, there's a moment where he almost cries thinking about the Timewar that felt pretty powerful.

You're coming on really strong, because Capaldi is a great actor and makes a good doctor, but I think you do have a point that sadness is a bit of a weak spot for him. Or at least the scripts don't give him a chance to do much with it. I remember his sad reaction when Clala seemingly died in the first episode of S9 was kinda bad.

Face the Raven is a good example though. He did a lot of quiet/sad stuff, conveying his emotion/reaction very well without even speaking at times let alone shouting.

Sadly true. As fun as The Deadly Assassin is, it really killed the magic of the Timelords. Now Gallifrey is essentially just another alien planet, nothing very mystical or mysterious about it.

I saw this picture recently and it made me think that this is what Gallifrey should be. This sort of atmosphere. Could be great.

>>63522647
It could be better if they kept the Timelords and gallifrey as mysterious. Showing essentially every facet of their civilisation, featuring high-up characters such as the president (even making the doctor become the president) turned it all into a bit of a dull farce. Having them being invaded by sontarans and daleks didn't help either.

The Timelords could have been kept as something above everything else. Something you don't really learn about and don't understand fully. Just watch the war games, or look at that image and imagine the Doctor being escorted past while a timelord walks into a room of light like that in the background with no explanation. Being shown hints of something bigger but never being apart of it. At the most, keep the Doctor and the audience at the lowest level of gallifrey society.

It's too late now though.

>>
>>63525139

>>63524918
I voted the same, no guilt. Capaldi leaving after S11 would still make him the longest running NuWho Doctor. I'm not anti female Doctor, though not thrilled at the prospect either, but Brooker is someone who I think could handle it well, and would have a very different overall vision for the show than what's come before. I always thought Coleman was a bit Tennanty when she plays Clara playing Doctor but that could work.
>>
>>63525015
Would depend entirely on the actor/actress. I can't stand this whole male/female/asian/black/white clusterfuck arguments.

There have been 12 (more, really) white male doctors. A lot of them were very good actors. I'd be fine with the next 12 being white males if they were also very good actors. I'd be fine with the next 12 all being Indian women if they were very good actors. It's bizarre people seriously reject a whole race/gender out of hand, when there could be a perfect performer in there.

Moffat will continue to be a hack and needs to fuck off. I hate Jenna and having her be a Doctor would be fanfictiony and shit, literally making Clara so important that the Doctor even regenerates into her.

...so do I. But if an arab woman could play the character better than whoever else in the auditions for 13, why not cast her? I'm not saying it's likely but I just don't get why people put race/gender/superficial stuff first, and the important stuff (whether they can play the character well) second.
>>
>>63525822
yes, they are.
for example
James Bond will always have to be a man because being male is a key aspect of the character
Miss Marple should always be played by an old woman
King Arthur is most suitable for a white actor

- although race is more flexible than gender, which is why I don't mind a non-white Doctor myself

Now the doctor is much more flexible than the characters above. I'm not saying he cant change sex and gender I just understand why people feel that way.

>>63525992
I can't really answer that, if I was in charge I would properly cast a woman as the 13th doctor to get it over with.

I Iike the 5th 6th 7th and 8th doctors myself but you'll find that there are people who just feel some are them just didn't 'feel' like the Doctor. A gender swap might do the same. men and women are just difference, even if its superficial it might alienate some people.
>>
>>63526190
Literally anything can alienate people. Matt Smith's chin probably alienated some. I don't see how saying "the best actor for the part should get the part" is at all controversial.

A woman will probably be the next one regardless of whether she's best for the part, but hopefully she will be
>>
So the next doctor is basically guaranteed to be a female at this point right?
There's way too much demand for it, moff himself strongly supports it and it's the focus of just about every article and interview about a new doctor
>>
>>63526235
Yup. Hayley Atwell is a fairly likely candidate as she's expressed explicit interest in the role, wouldn't cost TOO much (though a fair bit), and already has her own fanbase.
>>
>>63526262
The thing is, they don't usually choose a known actor or someone who has expressed interest in the role. Capaldi is the most "famous" person they've ever chosen and even he was unknown outside the UK.
>>
>>63526262
She's really not a likely candidate at all. She answered a question on twitter asking if she'd 'want to be on Doctor Who' with 'I want to BE Doctor Who' and it made the rounds on social media. I don't think anybody really cares if it really happens, and I doubt she's really that interested.
>>
>>63526279
Very true, but for a big event like casting the first woman in the role, they'd want to have it as "safe" as possible, meaning an actress already well-liked would help.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went with a much lesser-known British actress though, maybe someone from Downton Abbey or something. Or Ruth Wilson even.
>>
>>63526067
We're talking about the Doctor, not those characters. The Doctor's gender and race aren't key aspects of the character. The Doctor can be portrayed by anybody.
>>
Why did jenna ditch the 'jenna-louise coleman' after S7?
>>
>>63526226
you could hire a great actress to play James Bond but it wouldn't be James Bond because being male is key to that character.

I know the doctor is different, is being male key to that character?
He has quite a lot of male traits but would they be lost if the doctor switched gender?
I cant answer that.
That's something the fanbase is split on.
>>
>>63526376
>In between her first two series as Clara, Coleman, who had been billed throughout her career as Jenna-Louise Coleman, suddenly lost the Louise bit – prompting one newspaper to report on "the mystery of the missing Louise". "Peter now has a nickname for me: 'the artist formerly known as JLC'," she says. "The boring truth is that people have never really called me Jenna-Louise and I just found it very strange because I started to do more interviews and go places where people I didn't know kept calling me Jenna-Louise. It sounded odd to me."

>>
>>63526067

You're right that there are characters who are inherently typecast into a gender/age/race (some would debate that bond isn't one of them though)

The doctor's not one of them though. In fact part of his character is that his personality changes, and there's nothing about him that's limited to male only.

If they get the right actress and aren't blindly pushing a girl power agenda, I'd have nothing wrong with a female doctor. Gomez is doing great as Missy, I'm sure someone could do the same as the doctor
>>
>>63526416
True but irrelevant - literally none of the Doctor's character is inherent to being a male. I can't think of a single thing.

the race thing, I don't mind its just a pigment change really.

as the for the gender, I'm not sure men and women are different. a gender swap might change the character too much from what we know as the Doctor.

I'm completely in support of a female Doctor but I really hope it doesn't happen next. I want a female showrunner before a female Doctor. Wasn't this the first year that had more than one woman write for the show? I know it was at least the first time in years that any woman has. I don't trust a bunch of men to handle this, especially not Moffat. I cannot think of something worse than a female Doctor written by Moffat.

The result would be shit. She'd be overly sexual, noticeably not as clever/strong/whatever, but with a buttload of jokes/references to her gender like "what you thought I couldnt reverse the polarity because im a gIRL??"

And then people would look at that as "proof" that a female doctor doesnt work.

>>63526416

Those people are wrong. It's not about opinion here. There is genuinely nothing about the Doctor's character that is dependent on being white or male.
>>
Could Moffat knock two birds with one stone by making the Doctor a woman sex wise, but still identify as male gender wise?
>>
>>63526499
A whole TARDIS gang is always better than just one companion. Even just a third tagging along tends to be more fun.

I really wish Jack had gotten more episodes with Rose and Nine. They had a great chemistry for the short time they were all together, and the three of them getting along like old friends, joking about all their adventures we didn't get to see in the opening of Boom Town really salts the wound.

I support a female Doctor, but that question is fundamental if you want to do things properly, rather than jus have him regenerate and go "I'm a grill now lol". You need to work out how important the male aspect has been so far, if you want to do a female Doctor well.

No you don't. You just cast a female actor and then write the Doctor the same as always. That's how you do a female Doctor well. Drawing attention to it and making a big show of it is how to fuck it up.

>>
>>63526505
They wouldn't go there; too young and not a good enough actress. If they did then yeah, mistake. Shame Carice isn't British; I think she'd be good at it.

>>63526510
I get your broad point, but Moff writes Missy really damn well. I think if he writes f13, he'd make her gender an "afterthought", barely refer to it, etc. Which would be the right choice IMO, at least while it's him writing.

>>63526554
Yup

>>63526581
So damn true

>>63526660
I can almost guarantee you that the gender would not be dealt with much. It would factor into the premiere, but I sincerely doubt the series arc would be "am I different now that I'm a woman". Not that that's a bad idea, just that Moff/the mostly male writing team will not want to write it (not because they think the idea is silly, because they'd be wary of messing it up).

>>
>>63526875
>but Moff writes Missy really damn well
A lot better than I expected from him but there's still problems. The big one staring us in the face is that she's still referred to as "Missy" and not the Master. I understood using that name to hide her identity, and for the reveal. But the fact that it's stuck is ridiculous. It creates an unnecessary divide between her and her other incarnations, and "Missy" is a much weaker name compared to "Master". It would be like if the female Doctor called herself "Nurse"

>>63526905
Shut up.
>>
>>63526824
No, it isn't.
Remember the "Am I a good man?" arc that Capaldi had in his first season? That was good.
The Doctor turning into a female is the biggest possible change to the character that hasn't happened until now.
When it inevitably happens, I want to see what it means for the Doctor. I want to see her having to work out who she is from scratch. I want to see all the dramatic potential of this idea come to fruition.
If you turn the Doctor into a woman and don't do anything interesting with her, you might as well keep him a male.

Why not just be yourself and get something you'd like? If she only liked someone you acted like, she would never stay with you anyway.

>"I did it again, I picked another stupid ape!"

What the fuck? How did you even "pick" him? I don't get how the quote entered your mind.

Because I didn't want to order a soup or something and her think that I wasn't willing to pay for shit, so I ordered a massive fuck off steak to convince her I had money to spend.

>What the fuck? How did you even "pick" him? I don't get how the quote entered your mind.

It just sort of did, I was dissatisfied so I said I'd picked a stupid ape, I didn't even think about his race when I said it.

>Why lie? Date probably already screwed up at that point so why not at least tell the truth?

I really liked this girl and wanted it to go serious, that's what the point of the date was, so when I fucked up I tried to salvage the unsalvageable.

Honesty = potentially salvaging. More lying and social awkwardness = ruining even more. I'm not blaming you or anything, I've been in awkward social situations and fucked them up horribly myself at times ofc, just pointing out that going further down the rabbit hole of lies absolutely never helps.

>It just sort of did, I was dissatisfied so I said I'd picked a stupid ape, I didn't even think about his race when I said it.

But why not order something expensive, but you actually liked? A pasta? Naked posturing like that rarely works if you're the type to actively worry about it btw. It's extremely trite advice but "be yourself" really is the key to finding fitting partners

Yeah, I suppose, I just didn't want to say "I'm not having much but you eat as much as you can, my treat", I felt she'd be more comfortable if I had a big expensive meal too so she wouldn't think her doing the same was wrong.

>But why not order something expensive, but you actually liked? A pasta? Naked posturing like that rarely works if you're the type to actively worry about it btw. It's extremely trite advice but "be yourself" really is the key to finding fitting partners

I wasn't trying to say "look at how fat my wallet is" my point was that I wanted her to feel comfortable ordering a big meal, I mean in hindsight it was retarded as fuck but there was some method to the madness.

So Daleks have an empire, stable and accurate time travel, Davros, and aren't against hybridization anymore but don't have all Dalek advancement, knowledge and technology from the Time War.

Time Lords had enough resources after getting free of that pocket universe thing that they apparently took back Arcadia I'd have to guess and neutralized Dalek force on Gallifrey, but have no more bad ass Omega Arsenal weapons, and are traitorous pussies. But at least still have knowledge of whatever they might've developed during the War.

If they fight anytime soon, Daleks are raping the Time Lords

Reminder that the "get off my planet" scene only works with Dalton playing Rassilon and that without him it fell flat and didn't really hold any meaning.
>>
>>63532376

it holds the exact same meaning you fucking autist
>>
>>63532455
In-universe it does, obviously. But that doesn't instantly convert to the real world. Dalton had stature when he was Rassilon (and also in general, because he was Bond). We saw his Rassilon commanding respect, being intimidating, whatever. If we then saw the same man that had all that respect suddenly being ignored by the others, it would have been powerful. But it was a new actor, an old feeble looking guy who we had no prior history with. Having him be introduced and then 10 minutes later have people basically say "fuck you" to him means nothing.

I don't really understand why I need to explain the difference here. It should be obvious
>>
Why Moffat's plots' end never seems to much the setup? Is it this hard to not randomly swap obstacles mid-way?

No I'm not. I fully understand that in-universe it's the same thing, it's the same character no matter who the actor is. But I'm not talking about in-universe. I'm talking about the fictional TV show Doctor Who and why something didn't work as well as it could have.

Relax.

doctor who is a fantasy show in which 95% of plot devices and technobabble make zero scientific sense . the reality bomb isn't one of them - google vacuum metastability event. This year there was a paper that suggested one could be triggered by an artificial micro black hole and it would basically work just like what Davros wanted, by the creation of an unstoppable bubble of true vaccum, expanding at the speed of light and destroying all of reality on sub-atomic level in the process.

https://medium.com/starts-with-a-bang/could-black-holes-destroy-the-universe-de8a3135856f#.udufwlqmm

this is highly controversial and wouldn't work like in the show, but for a kid's show about an ancient ayy lmao travelling through the universe in a police box it's a surprisingly plausible idea.
>>
>>63532984
I think it helps if you are invested in the characters, beyond 12 just being the latest Doctor, or seeing Clara as just the latest sidekick. I am so I was looking for a culmination to the story of those two characters & that's what I got with her actual departure. So I didn't think "answering for her recklessness" was a perfect ending. Reducing a character to a cautionary tale centering on single trait of theirs that wasn't even their most prominent one is unsatisfying. Companions that actually enjoy travelling & want to do all the dangerous stuff the Doctor does is something I want to see anyway so I wouldn't want that framed as entirely negative. The only point her FtR death seemed to be labouring to make is that one day, unless you have extra lives like the Doctor, the dangers will catch up to you. But that's an extremely obvious lesson & doesn't require a death to illustrate. Every time a companion leaves we're reminded of that whether they die or not.

I preferred a story where the Doctor was driven off the rails by his loss, hinted at all series. He didn't immortalize a viking girl because it was the 'right' thing to do. The point the Doctor's at in his life now, his 12th, has a raw nerve & I found whittling that down more interesting to explore. Seeing his initial cold anger at her death turn into extreme persistence to the point of insanity in the confession dial simply to hold onto a bargaining chip, how easily his Doctor mask could slip when he let it, having his convictions tested with highly personal stakes. It makes the Doctor's code much more meaningful after being reminded of the resolve it requires to uphold & how falling short of his code is just a step away at any time. All of his actions lead to him paying the tragic price of forgetting the same friend he went so far for. But while he is punished for going Time Lord Victorious, he also gets his reward; he gets to give Clara more time. He earned that for billions of years of torture.
>>
>>63532984
I feel like Moffat never commit and cuts loose ends because he loves Big Finish.
And considering how special Clara is to him, compared even to Amy, he just can't let go.
It's a pathology in his writing.
>>
>>63534825
Counterpoint: Clara was portrayed as a smug cunt who was awful to the Doctor and was always right.
>>
>>63522647
Film the scenes on gallifrey in a surreal fashion so as it doesn't make sense to the viewer (though makes sense to the doctor and other time lords)
Or only have them show up mysteriously and disappear (like in Genesis when the doctor was upset they stopped his matter transportation and they acted like it was no big deal)

Or just have another time lord show up that isn't a complete incompetent

If Series 10 doesn't have funny episodes or even better a new companion like Donna, I'm fucking dropping it. A funny character that always take things in a funny way and through character development realises things are dangerous etc. is way fucking better than "I want to die because my boyfriend I've known for 6 months died".
>>
>>63535036
It's funny, because the way Clara is brought back in Hell Bent reminds me a lot of something the Expanded Universe might do: it didn't change what happened in the previous episode, but it allowed for a virtually infinite number of adventures between the moment she says goodbye to the Doctor and the moment she actually dies.
It feels a lot like the kind of continuity trick that BBC Books or Big Finish might use, rather than something that was planned as part of the show. It's an example of the expanded universe influencing the TV show, in my opinion. I'm not sure how much I like it, but it's definitely interesting.
>>
Question: will Moffat ever be a good writer again?
>>
Series 10 will be produced by BBC Studios, which is why filming is delayed to May.

It will have a way bigger budget and that's why they can have Peter Jackson, who, although is getting paid with a golden Dalek, needs more than filming in Cardiff.

Expect Series 10 to be seriously good.

She didn't want to die because of danny pink. She was accepting her death and wanted to die with some dignity like danny did. That's completely different to what you're saying.
>>
>>63535778
She briefly wonders if that was why she kept pushing herself, but that was her survivor's guilt talking. Also if that had been all it was it doesn't track with the almost formal way she invokes Danny Pink by his full name and only in the context of being brave when faced with death, or telling that guy who list someone in Before the Flood that it's possible to keep going because there's a whole life out there, or the rest of her behaviour in Series 9, or even parts before Danny's death in Series 8 where she was just as out for the thrill of the adventures despite knowing how dangerous they were.

the writer of the episode had this to say in the current DWM

>Sarah describes Clara’s death as, “fundamentally a horrible accident and misunderstanding. Ashildr was hugely irresponsible in making the deal with the Time Lords but she didn’t mean to kill Clara.” Clara’s fate is foreshadowed by the story’s opening scene, in which the Doctor and Clara bound into the TARDIS, covered in alien pollen and jazzed-up after another dice with death. Sarah nods: “And I think it’s foreshadowed right through the season. Even in Under the Lake, she’s like, ‘Come on, let’s go where the explosions are!; She’s not doing that because she has a death wish: she’s doing it because it’s enormous fun, because she’s high on adrenalin, because she loves running into trouble with her best friend. And she thinks they can carry on doing that forever. I really hope none of it comes across like she doesn’t want to live any more, because for me it’s the exact opposite. She’s living too hard and not thinking about the fact she’s vulnerable. That’s why those lines are so important, when she asks the Doctor why he gets to be reckless- she wants to be reckless too! I really didn’t want it to be that Clara had failed at being the Doctor. She did really well at being the Doctor! It’s just humans are much more breakable than Time Lords.

Series 9 had a mostly average baseline of quality throughout, it didn't swing as wildly between episodes as often happens. I guess that was a result of all the 2 parters.
