Anyone else think the aliens are meant to represent the absurdity of this series? It's because of them that Peggy kills Rye and this whole mess begins, and it's because of them that somehow Peggy and Ed make it out of what should, by all accounts, be their grave.
I think it's supposed to be a fill in for the questions that don't have any good answers in this show. It's almost making fun of the narrator, who openly admits to not understanding why so much of this is happening. It's like the show is saying "You can't really know what gave Ed and Peggy the way out of Hanzee's warpath, and you can't really know why all of this happened in the first place" Even Peggy sort of acknowledges it "It's a flying saucer ed, get a move on" It's not important to acknowledge the absurdity, it's better just to accept it for what it is, and move on.

The framing device for this episode is a retrospective, and even then it's understood that there are parts of this case that just can't be understood. I feel that it works better if the aliens not there as people are putting their faith or beliefs in something that isn't actually there and the world for face value is just absurd. There's no reason to actually show them because I feel that it highlights the denial of people not being able to accept the increased violence and other tragedies in the world. By showing it, it sort of confirms their beliefs and allows them to put their faith that something higher may be pulling the strings and that everything will turn out alright.
