You're kind of right, I started recently to take it seriously. I used to be satisfied watching whatever Nolantino movie was playing at the theater.
Then I got into a used horror movie craze, watched about every good one from 1920 to now. They're fun but they aren't exactly masterpieces of cinema. I suppose I could have put Suspiria or whatnot on there maybe.

I've had mine for a little while, but I'm just adding films as I watch them instead of going through adding everything I can. So it's pretty small. I like letterboxd for the diary, so it's the only focus of my account.

Got invited to a screening. He's essentially a big asshole, but he also plays it in a dark but occasionally funny way. Got a few laughs from the audience just because of how much of a shit heads he plays. He has a little monologue about a finding God that's pretty funny.
>>
>>63291094
I look forward to checking it out tonight, then.

>>63291133
Was it intentional? Sort of like Birdman? Or would you say the movie tries too hard to be dark and becomes laughable as a result.
>>
>>63291285
No, I would say it's intentional. It comes at all the right moments. When he's supposed to be a threat, he is, but he always holds on to that little bit of dark humor. It works for me, but I could possibly see someone disliking that aspect.
>>
>>63291329
Was it all done to look like one shot like Birdman was?
>>
>>63291133
>>63291109
Can't wait! Even without bear rape it sounds like fun
>>
>>63291385
Not the entire film.

Certain scenes would be filmed like that though. Like for example, in the beginning we cut from Leo and his kid hunting to Hardy and all the men at the camp, but when the camp gets attacked, it becomes a long take.

It's also used in some dialogue scenes to kind give it this interesting momentum. I did notice some hidden cuts, such as when Hardy lifts something onto a horse and it covers the camera for a second so they can edit it to another scene.
>>
>>63291507
Sounds great, I can't wait.
>>
>>63291614
Yeah, it's pretty great. It's a gorgeous film, and certainly worth watching for the technical aspect alone. Seems like it was a crazy shooting experience.

It's a bit lacking in terms of deeper themes and what not, and it has some cliches which kinda sucks, but it's still good.
>>
>>63291645
Plotwise it seems like a pretty standard revenge tale, Could be wrong though.

Seemed like the trailer gave away a big chunk of the plot, which said to me that it wasn't really what mattered.
>>
>>63291792
Yeah, it pretty much is. There's a little bit in there with some Natives, but it doesn't really do much except for play into things later on.

The trailer sadly does give away a bit too much. I know they kind of need to tell you what happens, but they really didn't need the "he took my son from me" thing to be included. It doesn't really ruin much, because there's much more past that, but a bit annoying.
>>
>>63291857
Oscar for Leo or no?
>>
>>63291948
It's fairly minimal in dialogue, but it's extremely physical. It seems like he really pushed his physical limits for this one, and that's super impressive.

Some would argue that he has had better performances before, but maybe they will give it to him for this just because they've snubbed him so often.

Yeah, because having a large variety of favorites is a bad thing. Rating into five vague categories with 3-4 highest is the best and most unique system I've seen. It gives a firm idea of what she likes, and it's easy to remember and get a feel for how she thinks. She isn't rating, just categorizing. I love looking through them.
It's really pretentious to rate "objectively" or use half stars so specifically, or high ratings sparingly with nearly everything you see being 2.5-3.

To exercise humility is, besides a reasonable approach, an easy way out of dealing with the world and, in this case, cinema. Indeed, to create an ongoing objectivity is pretentious, but this pretentiousness is the path that will reap the best results for the personal development of whomever watches something.
Both ways can be used, but I view with better eyes the rigid, ambitious one.

>>63295271
When I first made a letterboxd profile I got bored after marking some 500 films as watched and abandoned it for awhile. Decided to come back a more than year later and mark the ones I watched in that time frame and ones I could remember as a kid as watched and ended up somewhere over 1100 so I wasn't able to celebrate or take it in but I finally came back to Letterboxd and set goals for myself. I started logging things at a normal rate for a few months, feeling accomplished when I would 1200 and 1400. My profile still felt incomplete because I would casually run into things I can remember watching as a teenager or a kid. Decided to finally dedicate more time to it and find clever ways (such as sorting popularity by decade and hiding watched etc.) to finish my profile and ended up at 1800. Went back to logging normally and felt accomplished after reaching 2000. I would be lying if I said I had extensive knowledge about film after only reaching 1000. I had learned so much more in the next 1000. If I had to estimate how many I watched before I made a letterboxd it would be around 1350.

Pretty much >>63296374. One thousand logged films is entry-level, an amatuer in the true sense of the word. Someone who is passionate about film but has only really scratched the surface.

I think two thousand is a better benchmark, but even then it depends on what kind of films they watch and what they want to get out of it. Do they just watch films for the entertainment value and escapism they provide, or are they interested in the thematic and the technical.

I think I'll be pretty happy when I get there, but I know I am very much still a pleb because I don't challenge myself enough and still watch films too passively.

Interesting. I don't know how many I have watched, probably 2000, but I'm only logging movies I've seen since starting my account and that has been 141 in about a year. I think I have a pretty good knowledge of cinema but there are still many directors whose films I know nothing of.
>>
>>63298566
Yes pls that would cheer me up
>>
>>63298583
Very good point. Me, for example:
>seen 0 Tarkovsky
>seen 0 Eisenstein
>seen 0 Fassbinder
>seen 0 Leone
>seen 0 S.Ray

And, yet, I have thousands of films. To explore everything will take years, decades. It's insanity. Well, I intend to make 2016 a big year.

I think it is better to watch all of a director's films than just cherry-pick a few from every director. This way you get a better sense of their style and can speak about them in an informed way. Sometimes it isn't possible to see every film, but I have managed to see nearly ever movie and tv episode done by the following:

Michael Mann (haven't seen his inaccessible early student films and docs)

Larry Cohen (seen everything)

Jacques Tati (missing one short he co-directed and whatever his last credit is on the imdb)

Robert Aldrich (only missing a few tv episodes and short promotional film)

Carl Dreyer (missing a few shorts)

Gerd Oswald (missing only some tv episodes; fatigue started to set in when I was trying to watch all the episodes of Gentle Ben that he directed)

Currently going through Johnnie To's filmography, seen forty-four out of fifty-something so far, not sure if I'm going to bother with all the episodes he directed for TVB in the early 80s...after that probably Murnau, who only has something like nine of ten surviving films...

but yeah, it never ends...

A woman of that size, ridiculously voluptuous, somewhat scary as a sexual menace, and then, I saw a video of her speaking, and it was a bigger shock than Day-Lewis's Lincoln. It doesn't make any sense for her to have such a little-cutesy-feminine-girlish voice. I'm still recovering.

It seems that from Running on Karma (2003) on, To is incapable of making a less-than-great film and is just as likely to make a masterpiece. As long as he doesn't collaborate with Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark on a film where they all direct a part of it, anyways. Those types of films are never good.

Hey, I didn't end up finishing it. It was late, I was tired, and I just really wasn't in the mood for that level of aimless irony. I'm going to check it out again on the weekend when I'm better prepared for it.

I liked the bad porn acting, clearly posed shots of the group, and unnaturally intelligent rants they would go on.

Anyway yeah I just wasn't feeling it that night, but I will revisit it soon.

Blondes in the Jungle seems like it has more story to it, though I could be wrong. I think I'd like that better overall. Whitney Horn and Lev Kalman's style is very fun.

I'm not talking about /tv/ in general, but these threads. I had to leave because of that dyke (what happened to her) spamming Glau every day, it started getting to me. I come back every now and then, TDKR also took its tool on me and made me take a break.

Every year /tv/ has had some special shitposters. There's also one pre-glau that I can't remember.
>>
>>63306491
meh /film/ board is decent enough, slow and civil enough to get some discussion going on.

Slow and mostly dead doesn't matter to me, much better than any attempt of discussing anything in modern /tv/. I don't even mind shitposting, it's just everything is fucking shitposting and some terrible baits related to social issues.

Same shitposting would just invade 4chan's /film/, no reason it wouldn't.

Not him but that is literally plebbit tier Kiarostami, that is, it is his most mainstream (= shit) film which only Reddit would know about because they have basic as fuck taste and the only way they are watching a good foreign film is if it is picked up by the mainstream western radar.

I hope that helped.
