That was the point. It shows how reckless she has become over the years, dying by her own mistakes. It also impacts a lot more when she dies during a normal episode instead of having a big ceremonial death. He also talks about in Heaven Sent why he always has to win?! That just makes her death matter and weight more on the Doctor.

So Clara's death and Ashildr were both part of an elaborate plan to trick him into the Confession Dial (what The Doctor is holding at the very end of the episode)
The Confession Dial is a pocket prison where prisoners are trapped. It's Time-Looped so it's a constant form of suffering.
The "Veil" is the physical manifestation of the machinery of the Confession Dial. It assess the prisoner and stops whenever it tells the truth.
The Doctor held on to the ultimate truth for the course of Billions of Years' worth of Time Loops - until he finally got out.
Now free, The Doctor tells The Veil/Confession Dial the truth - as no one else is around to hear it.
He was the Hybrid the entire time. He was the one Prophesied to bring ruin to Gallifrey - so he stole a Type 40 TARDIS and ran. That's what he did all those years ago in his very first incarnation.
But he never knew why he would bring ruin to Gallifrey.
Until he met Clara Oswald - and she died.
And The Doctor became very, VERY Angry.

I saw the Doctor as the hybrid from a mile away. I could never forget the Doctor was half human (on his mother's side), especially once McGann actually appeared, it's pretty well locked in lore forever.
Also, people harping Clara survives are idiots. It's Time Lord Clara, from when she was reincarnated throughout the Doctor's time stream. She may know vaguely who she was, but she's not the same person. Worst case scenario, she dies and regenerates, and is the Doctor's next companion.
Better question at this point: Who was the mysterious woman from The End of Time if not the Doctor's mother? I'm hoping she won't turn out to be Susan, since the original actor is still alive and still acts.
Why the need to complicate shit in regards to Gallifrey, again.
Moffat gets rid of the Time Lock, puts Gallifrey in some pocket universe and makes it so that they never got destroyed, then sets stuff up about how the Time Lords were waiting for him to give the go ahead when it's safe for them to come back, now there's some huge prophecy shit about hybrids and the destruction of Gallifrey, they kidnap him and put him in some hell where he's just gonna be pissed as fuck knowing they've killed him/had him "recycle" himself millions if not billions of times and had a hand in Clara's death
I still don't quite understand how the gateway to Gallifrey was inside the dial. Did the Timelords make the portal? Can they move back and forth through the universe now?

It depends on your interpretation. The War Doctor was created in an attempt to bridge the gap between Classic and NuWho.
In the original timeline, the War Doctor activates the Moment during the Final Day of the Last Great Time War - essentially killing both the Time Lords and the Daleks.
In the altered Time line in DotD, All 13 versions of the Doctor work together to Time-Lock Gallifrey and shunt it into a different Dimension.
Assuming the latter Timeline, then The Doctor never committed Mass Murder against the Time Lords, as he never activated The Moment. Instead, 12 helped his other incarnations save Gallifrey.
The best way I can see it, the Time Lords kept the Doctor alive in TotD (giving him his new Regeneration Cycle) solely to keep him alive until they could kidnap him and throw him into the Confession Dial
If The Doctor knew that the Time Lords were the ones who imprisoned him, then he never would've spoken at all.
Funny enough, I think that during each and every loop, The Doctor DOES realize that it's the Time Lords who've imprisoned him, and that he's actually on Gallifrey.
The Doctor originally left Gallifrey during his 1st Incarnation because as the Hybrid - he was worried that the prophecy was true, and that he would destroy his own people.
Apparently the Time Lords never stopped worrying about that, and even after The Doctor saved Gallifrey. But the Time Lords royally fucked up.
In attempting to stop the prophecy regarding the Hybrid they retroactively create the Conditions which lead to the Hybrid fucking them up.
Bravo Moffat.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate this episode's direction?
