As for Eccleston, they easily could have made some shit up about how those magic cave ladies could grant him an extra regeneration. They waved over them being able to induce a specific regeneration type (young, male, warrior).

Nah, the fact that it was always there staring you in the face, but the details of JUST HOW FUCKING HORRIFIC it was weren't revealed until the very end was part of why the episode is so based. It's clear he's following himself through a sequence right from the start, but the sheer weight of how many times is something that hits you in the gut again and again at the end.

Harkness was only immortal cause Rose Tyler got the power of the tardis and essentially became a god.
When Harkness was fighting off the daleks he died so she brought him back. His immortality isn't the same as hers. He's just stuck in time hence the tardis doesn't fuck with him and brought him and the doctor to the end of time where they met the Master as an old man.

Punching a corridor out of the dead center of the diamond wall is probably the worst way of going about it, he'd have had to squat down and punch the ankle height bits of diamond. If he'd punched a corridor with less headroom then he'd have got the job done much faster. Back during the original storyline of The Ultimate Foe, when the Valeyard was on trial and told about his origins, the Doctor said it was a lie but there was a grain of truth to it. I'd agree that plenty of the episode before the final minutes was far from gripping. 'OOoh, a scary creepy fly' - it's scary because the Doctor tells you that it scares him, because reason. The monster is just a vague boogeyman, and there's padding out with things like the Sherlock segments.
