What did people think the Clone Wars were before the prequels?

i saw SW as a kid, and didnt know what the word "clone" meant. but it had dark connotations in my mind, certainly darker than what the prequels turned out to be.
There was a fan theory before the prequels that Obi-Wan is a clone, his name literally being OB-1.
I didn't rewatch the movies alot when I was young
stuff like references to the Clone Wars or fighting Bounty Hunters on Ord Mantell totally went over my head.
