Did anybody see The Lobster?
I just saw it yesterday and...I didn't really like it, neither did the people I saw it with. It was just too into it's own concept and the deadpan humor was just too much. The vibe of the movie was off...I liked the first bit in the hotel but the rest of the movie was just exhausting and too long. And the ending was unsatisfying.
Any thoughts?

1st half I was laughing my ass off, 2nd half was total shit
I was really disappointed because I thought that the second half was leading up to some sort of "beta uprising" allegory (they were literally called "the loners", i don't think that was too ridiculous to expect), but then it just didn't go anywhere
Main problem with the film, to put it succinctly, is that when he leaves the hotel the allegory/satire stops making sense, so it just became a boring pile of shit

Exactly, it's like the movie just lost it's point once he left. The allegory did stop making sense and I don't know...I wasn't afraid to tell my friends afterwords that at that point of the movie, I just "didn't get it."
I think you just had to buy into this world and this concept so much and I wasn't willing to, because they weren't making it very easy.

Is it just me or has 2016 been pretty awful? Only 2 really great movies so far. Almost everything has been disappointing.

I watched the directer's cut. Anyone seen both, and, if so, what differences are there between the two?

The difference is substantial. The Director's Cut is the true version of the film, whereas the Theatrical Cut was made especially for the theatrical release because they were worried that the full version was too impenetrable, and too bleak, for mainstream audiences. Pretty much all the stuff about the wider political situation in Indonesia is cut out, so that it revolves pretty much entirely around Anwar, Herman and Adi's scenes. It's more streamlined, sure, but I can't help but feel it leaves out vital political and cultural context to the characters' crimes.
Planning on putting together a supercut of The Act Of Killing and The Look Of Silence when I get my hands on some good editing software (cutting between the two) as an editing exercise and also 'cause I think if I can do it right it could be absolutely GOAT, not that the two separate films aren't already. Will post here if I ever do get around to doing it.

for once, Michael Bay wasn't the worst thing about a movie. but that doesn't mean it was great. the script failed to differentiate between any of the six protagonists in any meaningful way. they're not defined by anything more than "soldier with a family", except for the one that reads philosophy and the one who plays video games.
