Yes, there are 2 fanmodes, first one has the combiner peg as abdomen to fill the gap, the other just roll the hip cube another 45 degres to make it look like in the picture, you'll hide the painted detail but it looks more solid, neither of these mods make it peg, but he looks better.

So IDW is apparently making a short "What if" Transformers comic, set in the original movie, if Optimus was never critically injured, and was able to kill Megatron on the spot. (And he wouldn't get reformatted into Galvatron)

Useless headcanon bullshit: I used to say that the reason Ultra Magnus was a plain white Optimus Prime in battle armor because the Autobots tried to make Magnus a new Prime using the Matrix Flame (UK comic shit, look it up) while the Ark crew were "stasis locked" on Earth, but the fake Matrix energy was killing him (which is why he was all washed out and white) so they made a Pretender shell to save his life that could transform into a trailer for his vehicle mode.

What about plastic stability/durability, considering there are chances a combiner may be holding him at a downward pose maybe it would prevent the peg from cracking over time?
I theorize if the secondary peg was replaced by an actual usable peg it could snap at where the part is hooked into the toy, though not sure how the current design would hold if it was just cut, again this is just theory and I'm no engineer.

On the topic of Combiner colors, I think it depends on what colors are used, and if those colors are aesthetically pleasing.
For instance, God Neptune of BWII has a uniform color scheme of white, teal, gold, silver/grey, and brass. It looks good!
It could also do something with the individual personalities. Superion's more uniform color represents the Aerialbots' unity, while Menasor's clashing colors represents the Stunticons' hatred towards Motormaster.
