Well, we know the people that designed some of the toys at least. Or at least the engineering part of the toys(many of them are still at takara.) Granted, the same goes for most transformers..no credit is given. I think it'd be cool to do a western version of the generations books where you interview Hasbro/ Kenner designers and their counterparts at takara..maybe even a roundtable style thing where they recall the whole design process from shore to shore. But American toy designers seem to spread out pretty fast, going from one company to another, and Japanese designers seem cryptic to reach by westerners, so I doubt we'd see such a thing.

The unfortunate thing is that I find the color consistency doesn't really align on any of them. Takara Bombshell's purple is too soft, while Takara Shrapnel is like, nuclear purple, which actually matches better with Hasbro Bombshell, but Hasbro Bombshell's chest is a little more yellow to Takara's gold. I end up mixing and matching them anyway, or pretending the extras are just clones. They're great figures. I'm still impressed that something with a transformation as interesting as Skrapnel came out so close to the snorefest that is Combiner Wars.

I don't see whats wrong with Combiner Wars. The figures look good, or so I think. They work well as limbs. You've got some nice CHUG-ish representations of classics as gestalt parts. And you've got a bunch of classic gestalts with all new, good molds. There are some issues sure (Menasor's hips and top-heavyness, Defensor's always loose chest shield, etc), but on the whole, these things are damn nice.

I've got Wheeljack, Sideswipe and Jazz. Wheeljack is cool. My Sideswipe has a massive facial scar, and something about the joint that holds the roof back is wonky. Jazz is the fucking best, he's actually got a complete white paint job, and the little touches like his badge, visor, tail lights and turn signals are perfectly applied. Got CW Ultra Magnus, Cyclonus, Blackjack (and just finished sanding UW Motormaster's pegs so he seems to hold in now even when shaken), Powerglide to act as a more beefy gun for Defensor (since Superion's default gun is beefy enough as is), Groove to be a chestplate for my Defensor, and Generations Jhiaxus.

Ratchet/Ironhide's peg might be 5mm but the chrome might affect that. Inferno, Prowl and Jazz are way too small. The larger combiner weapons probably are.
I know G2 Megatron does not, it's a 4.5mm peg so it isn't compatible. G2 Hero Megatron is 5mm though, I've had him hold Gen Arcee's swords.

They're universally annoying, unfunny, and, for toy reviewers, often look at completely unnecessary things or add retarded skits. That said, I do watch a few reviews for any toy I'm interested in, if only to get a good idea of any potential problems the toy has, or some things I might have missed along the way, as well as the articulation it offers. I was rewatching Season 3 today, and I kind of hope that the new Trypticon has a gimmick where you can "close" his eyes so you can have toy accurate eyes or show accurate eye-less.
I kind of like the eye-less look more. Makes me think of something like a Reaverbot from Megaman Legends.
