Tbh, the only time keeping Arsenal in the top-4 was really impressive, was in the 11-12 season. Any other team, Arsenal was objectively better than most of the rivals gunning for it and whilst beating United and Chelsea to league titles would've been quite good, one would expect Arsenal to beat the likes of Aston Villa, Thai-money Man. City, Everton and Martin Jol/Juande Ramos-era Tottenham to a top-4 finish.

If anything, the squad he originally had enough quality to compete for the league and then lost a couple of players, but realistically still had enough quality to at least get CL-football. Take away the manager and the squad was still better than the aforementioned rivals, so you'd expect any half-competent manager to finish above them with the squads during most of those years. So I'm not really impressed by him keeping the squad competitive to beat the likes of Villa.
It's different in the 11-12 season and somewhat since that season, but then we start talking about a different issue in them not being aggressive enough in improving the squad.

Yes, I'm well aware of what happened, I'm saying the competition wasn't impressive enough in order to state that staying in the top-4 was a wonderful achievement between 2005 and 2011. It was an achievement, but it's not like those teams of his had no business being in the spot they ended up in.
Actually finishing 3rd in 11-12 was nothing short of a damn miracle though. Weird ass season, sort of wish I could've relive it again.
Since 2011, there has been a couple of seasons where the competition was strong enough for me to think that "if you fuck up enough, you could easily finish 7th or worse". But as I said, you could also argue that this all happened under some kind of self-imposed handicap.
Staying in it, is cool in its own right, but it's nothing that would make my dick hard. So I guess you could praise the man for at least never letting things completely go to shit. But all in all, it's not that much of an extraordinary achievement. The other teams who did end up missing out and dropped way down, ended up firing their managers for it.
