Now that Las Vegas is a confirmed team the NHL will have 31 teams. To expand to 50 this is the route I would take.
The first thing I would do is revive teams that have been defunct which are the Quebec Nordiques, Hamilton Tigers, Hartford Whalers, Kansas City Scouts, Cleveland Baron and Altanta Thrashers.
For the next 13 expansion teams I first looked at the most populated cities that have a team in NBA, NFL, and MLB, but not the NHL which is only Houston. Then cities with at least 2 teams in NBA, NFL or MLB: San Diego, New Orleans, Baltimore, Seattle, Indianapolis. Then most populated cities with at least 1 team: Sacramento, San Antonio, Portland, Salt Lake City, Orlando, Oklahoma City. Then I threw in Saskatoon because I needed another Canadian city in the West.
The season will be expanded to 106 games. With 4 games(2 home, 2 away) against each division opponent and 2 games(1 home, 1 away) against the other 45 teams. Also,the playoffs will be expanded to 32 teams.
For alignment of the divisions I decided to group teams into 2 Conferences(East and West) with 5 division of 5 teams within each conference. Then for divisions I grouped teams geographically and culturally and ignored some rivalries.

I think they are better off trading for lower end right hand dmen that can add depth so they aren't resorting to calling up a horde of left hand guys like they did last season. Too bad they didn't get in on the Deangelo trade. He has pp ability and was fairly cheep at a 4th rnd pick. Eberle is a soft winger who scored at a 55 point pace last season. I find it doubtful you'd fail to sign Shattenkirk long-term even if it'd mean an overpayment.
I think they need composed NHL talent on the right side. Their forward core is already over-ripe, they have wing depth of Hall, Puljujarvi, Pouliot, Yakupov and perhaps an UFA this year, plus they have three top 6 centres.

I think they are both fine top 4 guys. Sekera is a bit pricey but nothing too staggering. Klefbom was injured a lot last year but his deal is pretty good. It's acceptable value right now and you hope that he continues his development curve making it a steal.

I love Andy, but it's not very hard to make a case against him.
Arguing whether it's a true Hall of GOATs or just a Hall of Very Goods and all that. He doesn't really have any outstanding individual awards or seasonal accomplishments outside of power play success and never competed internationally after 1986 despite playing through 2006.
He had longevity for sure, but when you compare him to other guys in those top rankings he tends to have a lot fewer points despite a similar number of games played, etc. Someone like Recchi, who's also not in the Hall yet, will get in before Andy does.
I think he might squeeze in eventually, mostly because of the power play record, but it'll require a weak couple of years for the voters first.

Datsyuk has been on a decline. Injuries have made him miss 72 games over the last 3 years, and his points are no where they used to be. If the wings had kept him, he would have been a decent 2nd or 3rd line center and a 1st line power kill. Last season was arguably his worst in quite a while.
