Guys like crosby, ovechkin, kane, toews, etc can't really be ruined and turned their teams from basement dwellers to contenders basically overnight. Once you get a guy like toews or crosby who you can throw out in any situation and they'll outperform the best players in the world on the PK, PP, after a goal, overtime, etc, etc, that's when managing becomes kind of "easy" because you no longer have to worry about matchups and you just need to fill in around them

This year's was probably the best yet, however none of the players actually play for the proper national teams... They are just minor league players mainly.
Anyway to answer your question, the NHL is probably the best place to start, however it doesn't start again till October.
In the meantime, you should follow the local hockey league, the AIHL. Adelaide has the Adelaide Adrenaline, which is a bottom of the ladder team... But it's still great to watch nonetheless.
