Staal was over paid and played uninspired hockey after we won the cup. He was a hero here because of the potential he had to be a superstar and his community outreach. Raleigh people liked having a big name around because we felt it gave the team legitimacy. The franchise paid him like one too. He never played up to his contract. Empty stats on losing teams he led. When I start watching a new sport
what I look for in a team to support is a team that hasn't had a lot of success in the past few years but are clearly headed in the right direction. The goal would be to give yourself a season or two so that once they're winning shit you won't be regarded as a bandwagoner.

Facebook reminded me a week or two ago that it was the anniversary of the day the team left and all those awful emotions came rushing back. The rumors about an Atlanta buyer stepping in to save the club, rumors about Glavine doing the same, and then when they had that meeting in the middle of the night and folks in the know told us that the NHL was going to make the move happen no matter what. I'm one of the people that has a really hard time putting the blame on the city, not just for the Thrashers but the Flames as well. In both cases, our support suffered (though not nearly to the degree that people pretend it did) because of ownership. I can understand the factors that resulted in us losing the Flames far more than the Thrashers. Bettman knew exactly what the ASG were, everyone did. They were trying to sell the club the moment they bought them. When that didn't happen within enough time, the NHL should have stepped in immediately to prevent losing a city that was in no way, shape or form a lost cause.
Ted Turner really only knew how to throw cash at his teams, and that's what he did with the Thrashers, god bless him. But he made some poor decisions staffing the front office and the ASG didn't care to rectify them because they had no interest in keeping the club. Together, Bettman and Atlanta Spirit gave us a fucking that would violate the m-less terms of service in about 40 different ways. And did so in part because he didn't want to do it to Phoenix, which blows my fucking mind to this day.
