With the ACO ripping the rug out from under IMSA, I would expect IMSA to try something else. Personally, I like Marshall Pruett's idea of keeping the current (2016) P2 chassis regs and using GT3 engines. That would give everybody access to a large selection of used chassis (with ACO-based teams switching to 2017 spec stuff), as well as a HUGE selection of a variety of different engines.

Me too, my friends and I have been thinking that would be the solution for a while and then they pulled the P2 spec bullshit. It seems to make so much more sense logistically but I'm not sure of the windows they have to fit some of those engines into the P2s.

The correct answer was "no". DP was (and is) only open to a limited number of approved chassis builders and Coyote, Lola, and Dallara had to buy Fabcar, Multimatic, and Doran's designs to get in. Plus on top of that the cars are homologated for several years at a time with only moderate changes allowed between. The car Taylor runs is literally over 10 years old and was modified once with new bodywork in 2008 and then again in 2012 to fit the Corvette bodywork.
In terms of bodywork there is currently only three approved bodywork packages in DP and one of them is a minor variation of another. When said bodywork was introduced it all had to meet the same drag and downforce figures and the existence of a factory body kit means you can't run that manufacturer's engine without it. (eg. if a Riley BMW switched to a Chevrolet engine it would have to be made into a Corvette DP)
The manufacturer body kit concept has yet to actually succeed anywhere but silhouette car racing. Gen 3 DP barely got 2 manufacturers over 5 seasons and it sure as hell didn't get anyone banging down the door to be in IndyCar.
