The type of fighter that hard counters Maia is someone with good footwork and angles that denies and starves Maia of the cage walls he needs to start his offensive set.
Force him away from the walls, he can't start his chain grappling sequences.
So then we ask ourselves can Rockhold implement a striking gameplan with having enough footwork and angles, Rockhold does have a good kicking game, but hard angles and footwork? He would need a full camp to instill that tactic.
The fight could play out with Rockhold TKO in 3 rounds. OR Maia Dec in 5 or sub within 3.
I think Maia has more possible ways to win, i think Rockhold might have the ability to win if good enough training camp and smart enough game planning

Not sure of either walk around weight, we do know that Maia has competed at MW, and was competitive with some of the bigger MW such as Chael Sonnen who walks around at 200lbs. So weight wise should be a factor to much or strength. Since Maia has show he's a stronger BJJ based fighter.
Maia's 6'0 with a reach of 72
Rockhold is is 6'3 with a reach of 77
Maia pefers the grappling range where Rockhold's reach advantage doesn't hold strongly.
It would mean something striking, but we haven't seen Rockhold fight as a tall man, so it goes back to how well Rockhold could gameplan and implement that plan to use a reach advantage.

I'll say this, i agree that i could see Rockhold winning by TKO in 3rds.
There are some things that dont sit right with me though, i dont think Rockhold would blast through Maia unless he hardcounter him with good game planning.
I think gauging athletes strength is a tad shortsighted by doing MMATH.
One thing I do like to note, is even though Jacare has probably higher BJJ credentials then Maia, what's interesting is their differences, you can see numerous times in Jacare's fights, he still thinks like a sport based BJJ player, whereas Maia is has adapted his BJJ game more into a fighting style that is more adpative with MMA. not a knock on Jacare he still succeeds in his grappling gameplan, but you can see a stark divergence in styles when you compare Maia's BJJ to Jacare's.
And because of that I wonder if Rockhold would struggle more with Maia on the ground then he did with Jacare on the ground.
So i stand by that Maia wins with a sub in 3 rounds, or a boring 5 rd dec (I could see Rockhold gassing, similar to his last performance against Weidman)
Or i could see Rockhold neutralizing Maia's cage wrestling, forcing Maia to do shitty shots in the middle of ring and force him into a kickboxing match and Rockhold getting a TKO victory in 3 rounds.

He does suffer from a huge weakness and that is destroying his mobility. If you watch TJ in round 4 and 5 he was remounting some offense but attacking Cruz's leg.
The second thing to hard counter Cruz's footwork is prevent him from resetting, His footwork lets him retreat and reset either from a first strike or a counter, either option he always darts away at an angle. If a fighter can predict which angle he likes to dart and retreat to, they should be able to start their own offensive set.

Tell me you aren't at least a little nervous at first glance that he might try to rob you out of the blue.
It's a silly thing to refuse service for, but it's certainly understandable from certain points of view. And it's certainly not anything to chimp out about either unless you're a psychopathic, rampaging, testosterone filled "alpha male".
I'd certainly be irritated, but I wouldn't yell and throw my slurpee on the ground like an asshole. All I'm doing is scaring them more. I'd just knuckle down, throw back my hoodie and buy my slurpee. A delicious slurpee is certainly worth a minuscule and momentary loss of pride.
