usually it's pretty easy to see after a while what doesn't work, just keep an eye out for repeating patterns, eg. players keep passing the ball around the box but nobody tries a killer ball(too short or conservative passing or not enough movement into space), players just mindlessly hoofing the ball without ever completing passes(usually either the tempo is too high for their skill or again there isn't enough movement), stuff like too narrow or too wide is easy to spot, so are defensive issues, like getting constantly caught out by passes over defense, some opposition players getting way too much time on the ball, wide players being retarded defensively(usually unfixable in current ME so you're better off just giving them ultra-offensive roles because they're not going to contribute to defending anyway and the same applies to the opposition so you should just overload them completely)
