Thanks. Looks like there were 5 nohopers last year, which meant there were about 8 spots for 15 teams. Winning half of those 14 matchups would have put you in the middle of the real teams. Those 7 wins and the 5 free wins made it 12 needed for the finals, which works out.
Assuming that method is correct, then there are 17 teams competing for 8 spots, and you'll need 10 wins against real teams to make the 8, as well as the 3 free wins.
So this year it looks like 13 wins are needed because there is more competition. Just my theory and it might not work out but it might help some people.
