When he was signed, Sandoval could hit and at least play his position. You sign a player based on their past performance and a rough projection of how that player will develop in the future. I'm not saying Boston is blameless here but if I neglect myself and fail to meet physical standards, I can get removed from the service. If an air traffic controller develops a panic disorder and has to go on anti-anxiety medication, he can lose his job. If this was a simple case of a player coming off his peak years or losing some of the chops he used to have, I don't think people would be nearly as bothered - but it's not. Not making excuses but some of the runs scored against the cards were allowed by the bullpen, Kershaw was just responsible for them on base.
