real talk though? what's wrong with this ni66a? I have a minor bet with a professor over the AL Cy Young. And I'm not about to lose back-to-back Cy Young predictions...

>my face when "people" actually think the team with the best pitching rotation in the AL and a top 10 offense in the MLB will miss the playoffs this season

>Adrian Beltre (objectively and statistically a top 5 third baseman, it isn't even debatable)
>Yu Darvish (best Pitcher in the game who will be 100% healthy, unlike the entirety of last year, he will put up 1.98 ERA, 280 SOs, and a sub 1.000 WHIP)
>Elvis Andrus (a top 3 shortstop already and going into this season will be fully recovered from causing all those errors in the ALCS (2.9+ dWAR, .290 BA )
>Shin Soo Choo (literally a top outfielder that is way better than just a platoon guy .700 OBP)
>Prince Fielder (top 10 designated hitter 35 HRs, .700+ slg,)
>Joey Gallo (a white guy trapped in a black's body, one of the smartest players in baseball, elite measurables, incredible upside)
>Delino DeSheilds(one of the fastest and most explosive players in baseball)
>Cole Hamels (one of the best post season pitchers)

>Best Bullpen in the AL
>Best pitching staff in the MLB
>Best infield in the MLB
>Top 5 total

Barring major injuries to key players, there is literally no way the Rangers are missing the playoffs this season

>>

well if you didn't know the larger you are the harder it is to throw strikes. Which is why Randy was shit for his first few seasons. You got huge fucking limbs trying to spot balls in what is to you, a small zone in relation to your size. Threw hard though, huge advantage in his era.

Is travel baseball better than little league? Is travel baseball killing the game?
>>
Giants offense is as dead as Prince
>>
>>66999408

> Is travel baseball killing the game?

of course it is. kids were never meant to play any sport all year long, and people wonder why we see so much TJS these days
>>
>>66999354
mest fans have the biggest mouth in baseball and are the biggest meme in baseball, yet they can't bring in more than the Yankee's whose ticket prices are ridiculous and can barely bring in ~1000 more than Colorado.

>>66999408
Little League has a lot of shitters, travel is above average talent all around. Nobody is paying $300 for a 5 day tournament if your kid is shit. It's pitching coaches and experimental throwing schools who are killing arms.
>>
>>66999520
>VELOCITY IS ALL THAT MATTERS PLAY ALL YEAR OR ELSE YOU WON'T GET SCOUTED OR YOU WON'T MAKE IT TO THE BIG LEAGUES
>why are people getting injured golly gee i don't know
>>
>>66999408
Some of those travel coaches are ruthless. They'll have young pitchers start multiple games in a weekend tournament and blow their arms out throwing 50+ breaking balls in a game. This is even worse in the south where they play and train ball all year round.

But the talent in little league just isn't comparable. You get better coaching, resources, and competition in travel ball. And it's the only way kids get noticed (high school ball isn't really that great in most places either).

So yes, travel ball has it's fault but it's really the only option elite young players have to succeed.

That's not true. Leagues have rules which protect kids just like in little League. 40+ pitches (3 days rest) 60 pitches (4 days) etc
>>
>>66999680

leagues have rules, showcases and tourneys can't possibly know when a kid pitched last. baseball dads are fucking sharks man, they want their kid front and center every inning

>>
>>66999680
The rules really don't protect them that much. I can't remember what the rules were I played, but it wasn't uncommon for pitchers to start at least 2 games a weekend. Hell, I started 2 games in one day once when I was like 16.
>>
>>66999704
I understand what you mean I played in travel ball, typically for any showcase or tourney you want to be well rested just like in high school the days before the draft. Nobody is trying to have you take the mound on 80 pitches from less than 48 hours ago. Pitching coaches push you most in bullpens to get better, every pitching prospect goes to some sort of throwing school, that's where the biggest problem lies. In velocity drills. You get to touch 90 before you're 18 but lose all command and suddenly have all these body injuries you never had before.

>His second no-hitter (and first official no-hitter under current rules), on August 19, 1965, also required 10 innings, but he won that one 1-0 over the Chicago Cubs. Maloney outdueled Larry Jackson, with the Reds winning on a Leo Cardenas home run. Hey man, Blue Jays were too. Both still are. The Rangers had the Jays on the ropes. Well, everyone but Elvis Andrus. It's a shame such a good start by Hamels was wasted because of him.

Speaking of, are Rangers fans still super negative about that trade, or has Hamels/Diekman been good enough for them?

>mfw cubs """""""fans"""""" think their team is going to win the World Series this year

You guys won't even make it to the NLDS, your team has literally no pitching other than Arietta (he probably uses pine tar every game, or is overrated anyways) whatsoever while we have without a doubt the best pitching staff in baseball. almost to the point that our bullpen is practically unhittable. Not to mention the entire world dickrides your overrated offense while ours is just as good as yours. We have the best catcher in baseball (Molina), the best third baseman in baseball (Carpenter), and various other CONFIRMED All-Stars in Holliday, Wong, Piscotty, Grichuk, and Peralta (when healthy).

You no-hit the fucking Reds, this is a terrific accomplishment isn't it? Good god you cucks have to be the most naive piece of shit trash fans in the entire country. When your team was shit just 2 years ago, you guys were nowhere, and now, you guys just come out of the blue, bandwagonning like no other. Our fans remain the best in baseball, and we stick through the team all year long, while you guys glory hunt whenever the Blackhawks, Bulls, or Bears somehow decide to win things. Once you guys get eliminated, I will be basking in massive Cub tears just like every other year. It's considered an absolute pleasure to watch them go down.
>>

>>

You also like to take pride in taking away that nigger, Jason Heyward from us. Who the hell would TAKE LESS to become part of an organization of losers and cucks? Not to mention, play in the most dangerous city in the entire country? We offered him more money, he's clearly what's wrong with society, he's a fucking traitor piece of shit nigger, I would have even signed with the Nationals if I were him, that I wouldn't mind, but the Cubs? That's going to fuck up your career for good. I can't wait to see him regret signing with you cucks one year later.

Come back here, when the REAL NL Central kings (the Cardinals of fucking course) put you and your team of cucks in their place and while we go on to win our 5th year of a drought World Series, I'm sure your collective tears will be more than delicious.

I can't actually assume people think the rangers didn't give up much, because this trade really bumped the Phillies farm from Bottom 5 to top 10, and the Giles Trade(Even if Giles becomes the next Mariano, that's a bad trade) pushed them into the top 5 discussion.

I think the confusion comes from people thinking the only way to win a trade is to get their #1 prospect

To get up Hamels, the Rangers traded Harrison and Minor League catcher Jorge Alfaro, outfielder Nick Williams and pitchers Jake Thompson, Jerad Eickhoff and Alec Asher. Those are some pretty good talents however I think the Rangers still made out like bandits and here's why:

>Aquire an easy #1 Starter
>Aquire an above average set up lefty reliever
>Keep Jody Gallo your #1 prospect
>Keep Nomar Mazara who is currently paying dividends

Not a bad trade imo

Nomar and Gallo were never in play. Just like Betts and Swihart were never in play for the Sox, or Schwarber or Russell were never in play for the Cubs. I'm glad Hamels is in Texas, and I'm glad the Rangers are good with him there. It gives him a chance to win and it sped up the Phillies rebuild by leaps and bounds(same with the Giles trade). Before the Hamels trade, the rebound looked to be 2019, after Hamels it looked to be 2018, and now it looks like it has a chance to happen late 2017.

Also, thanks for not protecting Odubel. He's an awesome guy too! But DeLino ain't bad either, so it's not like that killed you either

I hope the White Sox do good this year because we share a thing in common, dislike for the Cubs. When they become Chicago's best team at the end of the season, Cubs fans will begin to hop on that bandwagon, and those """"fans""""" would be coming back to a loser franchise in the Fubby Cucks,

Cards-Royals will be OK, we'll beat them anyways. The Mets have no offense, we do.

Missouri > Illinois
>>
>>67004519
And it won't ever happen. The Cucks will get shot down by elite pitching. It's either the Cards, the Mets, or the Dodgers that will put them down for good.
>>

I would love that. The White Sox at least don't have a bandwagon factor, and they share a nice, healthy hatred for the Cubs, while the Cubs just look down on them as if they're irrelevant. They're bro tier. Cards and White Sox should form an alliance to keep the Cucks and Roylels out.

Is Baseball a sport you can get into eventually or do you have to be around it all your life to really enjoy it (like cricket, I guess)? Never really gave the game a chance.

Baseball is a fairly easy sport to get into. There might some rules that are foggy but that comes over time. It's also on every single day. Believe it or not, playing Mlb the show might get you into it faster as well.

The 2004 Yankee red sox ALCS is a classic. The 2001 world series with Yankees diamondbacks is also a classic. If you didn't watch last year's post season I would watch the astros royals ALDS or jays rangers ALDS.

The 2011 world series with cardinals and rangers is also wildly entertaining and crazy.

the best way to get into any and learn the nuances of any sport is to somehow find a way to get emotionally invested in a team and wait for them to be good. many of course cut to the chase and bandwagon a good team. other than that, i found that actually going to games helped me get into it a ton, but obviously that is difficult for you.

i would suggest asking a lot of questions and also watching stuff like >>67010892

the best way though is to watch the postseason live with /sp/, as shitposting is the greatest sport bonding mechanism and watchability enhancer of all. there is no way i could tolerate watching the world cup without /sp/, for instance

Phillies might be a team to watch in the coming years. They got a horde of young prospects in trades last year and fired a long standing incompetent GM. Also it's possible current superstar Mike Trout may jump to his childhood team when his current contract is up.

adding to this, baseball is just really nice background. it kind of makes it sound bad but if you find a way to have something else to do during mostly meaningless regular season games, it helps a lot compared to intently watching a game with potentially many dull moments as someone not fully into the game yet. having it on the radio while you do other stuff or on a stream while you shitpost on 4chan is top comfy

that said, while it is the most laid back regular season, baseball easily has the most nerve wracking and intense postseasons of any major american sport in my opinion. the structure of the game can cause extended stretches of extreme tension lasting as long as 10-15 minutes straight. as you become more of a diehard fan, of course even regular season games can feel this way.

its like if you are watching a divegrass game in a major important tournament and the opponent team has possession of the ball and is making a shot on goal every 15 seconds for 10 minutes straight. it makes your heart want to explode. every swing of the bat can change the game massively and you just never know when it will happen.

I wouldn't count on it. Theyre struggling to hit the ball. It was supposed to be their strength and thus far it's been a glaring weakness. If it wasn't for the starting rotation they'd be lucky to have won 4 games. Gray is going to eat anyone not named Donaldson, Bautista, encarnacion alive.

>>
>>67012739
Well we have every right to be pessimistic. Toronto doesn't have the greatest track record for sports. The last championship won was the jays in 1993. I don't classify the Argos as a major accomplishment desu.

But a lot of fans are cynical regardless if they know the game inside and out or not. It's just how it is. Baseball is a bit different though because of how long the season is. You're given more opportunities and time to get better.
Its a little silly to jump ship now when we're just approaching 1/10th of a season. It's such a cliché thing to say but it really is a marathon not a sprint.

the DH is a savior for baseball. unless you have a Carlos Zambrano or Micah Owings on your team, your #9 spot is a >95% chance of being a free out in the NL. The only thing most pitchers are good for when batting is sac bunts, and even then it's a crapshoot.
Also, because you often face much better competition at that spot in the order in the AL, you improve from your time in the NL, if you were there earlier on.

If you have a team you're emotionally invested in winning, you'll catch on fairly quickly and the sheer perfectness of the game of baseball will suck you in.

Every movement of the ball is significant and incredibly dense with skill. It's a highly structured game and the beauty shines through when unexpected things occur in routine play, both fuckups and displays of excellence. There's no real garbage time either (not counting obscene late inning leads). A two, three run lead can be overturned in the final frame of the game, which is practically impossible sometimes in other sports. There's also the game within the game, pitcher vs batter. Pitching itself is only really comparable to bowling in cricket, a unique form of antagonistic defense. Because of the games rigid structure it also lends itself beautifully for statistics, as players are almost always isolated to perform individually, and are granted more or less equal opportunities to prove their abilities. This is also aided by the fact that basedball is on practically every fucking day and the 162 game sample we get of MLB player's performance is utterly unmatched.

Maybe it only appeals to a certain kind of semi autist, and if you don't have a good team you want to win you might be bored as fuck in the beginning. But ever since I started watching I feel like I'm betraying my other two loved sports because I'm literally thinking about baseball all the fucking time
