I think the only thing standing in the way was the UFC being willing to make it worth his while. GSP wanted to renegotiate his old contract because it's still active if he comes back, and that contract was completed under terms not currently present in the UFC, because of just what you said, his sponsors.
The UFC will give GSP whatever the fuck he wants to come back now. GSP coming back gives the UFC leverage over Conor if Conor decides to stay "retired". Everybody loses if that happens.
What would be really fucking awesome would be if GSP agreed to come back and fuck Conor over, and then a week before the fight demanded $15M or he's pulling from the fight. Now that'd be dope.
