>>66597625

why the fuck did they hire him? did he drive for another team before this year?
>>66597502
I think that these races up to summer break are imperative for Haas. If they ride the hype and pull some sweet sponsorship, they have the money to build next year's chassis. Without it, they would need to rely on Haas to shoulder even more developmental costs, and they are still behind other teams in terms of time and aggregate track data.
Worst comes to worst, they have their first year Trump card still
>>66597652
No way. I don't think there are any sponsorship deals of over 100M dollars in f1.

For those of you talking about sponsorship deals, 10 figures isn't completely out of the question; Vodafone's sponsorship of McLaren was worth ~$75M in 2011 (if Forbes is to be believed) and that has since apparently been topped by Shell's deal with Ferrari signed in 2015 although I couldn't find any actual numbers or good data so I may be wrong.

Haas is a completely new team, but they partnered with Ferrari to get help designing their car. Ferrari has reportedly gotten quite a bit out of this by doing some of their testing through Haas to get around testing regulations.
That's not to say the Haas is the same as the Ferrari though, just that they share some basic parts and the Haas boys took guidance from more experienced Ferrari people. They also scored a 2016 Ferrari engine so that's quite a plus.
Obviously, Haas is in debt to Ferrari so they've taken on Gutierrez like Sauber before them (Sauber uses Ferrari engines as well). I'm pretty sure he brings in a decent amount of sponsorship money as well.

Pure racing: Bahrain. It's one of the few tracks where large numbers of proper overtaking attempts can be combined with good racing. It didn't quite work all that well this year because most of the overtakes were done via tyre strategy differences, but usually it's great.
Track itself: Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Silverstone or Suzuka. The flow of all 4 of those tracks is utterly divine.
Atmosphere: Monza. Goes without saying. It usually suffers in dominant seasons though.

>utterly divine flow
Are you trolling mate? I honestly can't tell because those tracks are both pretty horrible. Abu Dhabi has potential but it's effectively ruined by chicanes and the boxiness that is sector 3. Only real "flowing" part of the circuit is Turn 2-3 lol
Singapore on the other hand is pure autism shit with way too many shit corners and almost nothing redeeming except that it looks pretty cool at night I guess.
There are so many tracks that have objectively better "flow", e.g. Melbourne, Malaysia (although not great), Spain (minus final chicane), Canada, Spa, Austria, Interlagos etc
>>66600014
Watch the Baku race be incredibly entertaining and a great track and just a general highlight, only for the country and city to go into full war-mode and the city be bombed to shit and never to be raced at again. Kind of the fate of the Turkish GP but much worse
Some people who tested F1 2016 for Codemasters got to drive the Baku circuit and they said that it is quite a good track, the "inner city" section is very challenging and tricky to get right and that the straight is immense and the top speeds are crazy.
Then again these are people who play video games as a source of income so take that witha grain of salt.
>>66598883
Cota, Silverstone, Bahrain, Albert Park, Interlagos, Circuit Gille Villenvue.
I think street races aren't as good for racing... At least Albert park is so wide it's got good opportunities.
haas is making america great again
>>66605423
>Abu Dhabi has potential but it's effectively ruined by chicanes and the boxiness that is sector 3.
Flow-wise, I tend to prefer technical tracks and hate high-speed corners (with the exception of Silverstone), and S3 is specifically what I like about it. Turns 2-3 are okay, but there's no reason to care about those when there are much better similar sections at other tracks.
>Singapore on the other hand is pure autism shit with way too many shit corners and almost nothing redeeming except that it looks pretty cool at night I guess.
It's the kind of track where you have to be consistent everywhere on every lap while fighting off fatigue to even remotely stand a chance. That naturally leads itself to having good flow if you're doing anything but qualifying laps, and even those are Monaco v1.5 tier.
>Melbourne
Tier 2. Loses out because of S1.
>Malaysia
I do like it quite a bit. Tier 2.
>Canada
Ruined by S2.
>Spa
Tier 2. Pouhon is one of the worst corners on the calendar, and while Eau Rouge is harder than in the 2011-2013 years, it's still not what it once was.
>Austria
Fuck no, awful everywhere.
>Interlagos
S2 is irredeemably shit.
>>66605536
I guess we just have entirely different definitions of flow then. I specifically dislike driving/watching Singapore because it's such a busy track and it has so many corners that you have to slow down so considerably for that it feels like constant starting and stopping and its really hard to build up a consistency because of this, and pushing itself doesn't feel fun at all because carrying speed is much more difficult and rendered close to impossible with the abundance of slow 90 degree 1st or 2nd gear corners everywhere.
Singapore is a difficult track and sure you have to be in a mental state of flow to make it work for you, but the track itself does not really flow line-wise like Monaco does. Aside from the post-tunnel Chicane, the whole track has a very natural and constant flow and movement to it with corners kind of blending into one another and there are basically no points on the track where the driver could theoretically let go of the wheel and drive straight, as even the straights are curved. There is also quite a big variation of different types of corners. So does Singapore, but Singapore has way too much of the boxiness that is the curse of street circuits, i.e. straight - 90 degree turn - straight etc
Pouhon is a terrible corner I agree but it's got a difficulty to it and it doesn't ruin the track at all. It's good to have a difficult corner before a long straight because then you can actually affect your speed on the straight based on your own skill. Eau Rouge is iconic but it is too easy nowadays. It was at it's best when it was borderline flat out and drivers really had to have supreme confidence to keep it flat without spinning. Again, doesn't affect the flow of the circuit though

80% of Singapore's corners are the same 90 degree left or right. there's nothing good about it except for 3-5, 11-13 and the last corner, which are still not exactly stellar. It has absolutely awful flow. The same can be said for Abu Dhabi's s3 even though I admittedly quite like the track, lel

Isn't Hungaroring being repaved and redone anyway? I mean the track layout will be the same but pretty sure there's some major construction going on.
Pretty sure they're refinishing the surface with the copyrighted FIA special tarmac that ensures every track surface is exactly the same and specifically designed with the F1 cars in mind, meaning it's going to kill the track and made it much shittier
Bit like what they did at Interlagos but that was also a lot to do with the curbs being altered which is a big deal considering it's basically Cornercutting: the circuit.

Why is everyone so willing to believe McLel when they say their chassis is second best to Merc?
The Honda is more powerful than the Renault and they're miles off Red Bull's pace. McLaren have a shit chassis that has a decent amount of downforce but is much draggier than RB/Merc and is very unstable in the corners. Just like it was in 2013 kek

Why has Haas been able to choose the optimal strategy over the past 2 races and nobody else has?
It hasn't even been stupid strategy, they chose the mediums in Australia, but also knew that they would suck in Bahrain, instead of everyone else just going for the mediums because they were the right choice in Australia.

they lucked into it in Australia - had there been a safety car instead of a red flag they would've stayed out and not scored any points by being dumb-dumbs - and Roof Buscombe did her homework in Bahrain. Magnussen and Wehrlein did the same strategies as Grosjean in Bahrain iirc, but because they started lower down the order they were more anonymous. Hell, if Bottas hadn't pitted one lap before the red flag in Australia he would've been on the same strategy as Grosjean (#JustWilliamsThings)

Force India now cruising around P12 with a shit car that is going to get even shittier and probably have the owned jailed and have the team go bankrupt.
Smart move. I bet he was confident the Aston Martin deal was gonna go through but now Red Bull even cucked them with that. Hulk is finished, WEC is calling
>>66626471
Yeah if they get their own engine supplier. You can guarantee that if they start beating Ferrari, there will be some mysterious "problems" with their Ferrari-supplied engines and the partnership will be terminated. I would honestly not be surprised if that was an actual clause in the contract itself, that they cannot consistently outrace the main team.
Ron Dennis is an autist but he is in a way right to pursue what McLaren is doing with Honda. You really cannot win the WDC without being a works or de-facto works team with your own engine supplier.
Haas would probably also start looking at actually constructing their own chassis.

Mercs are full of shit.
They downplay their performance to make themselves look less dominating. It is most probable that they drive a very conservative PU mapping.
Ferrari PU2015 is good, look at Haas, instant Top 10.
Why do all the engineers on the radio sound exactly the same?
>>66627069
Yeah and Haas run the 2016 PU you fucking retard
How is it so hard to understand that Toro Rosso is the only team running the older Ferrari power unit?
But yea Merc sandbag harder than ever and they can afford to do so in the name of reliability. They turned their engines up once for quali and they were half a second faster than Ferrari. Ferrari also turned up to full power and it ended in one engine failure and they're still not close at all and Bahrain is a track that specifically suits them. Rosberg specifically said that the race itself was completely controlled in the most conservative manner possible, meaning that he basically cruised around and Ferrari still couldn't even close the gap to them.
Mercedes is right about Renault and Honda not being as shit as before though. Honda for example overtook cars quite easily in Bahrain even without DRS against the Toro Rosso.

>Hulkenberg 184 cm OMG he's so tall he's too tall this is the reason he hasn't been signed to a big team its his size that is holding him back such a shame if only he wasnt so tall
>Jenson Button 182 cm (2 [two] centimeters shorter) meanwhile enjoys a Formula 1 career for more than two decades with no problems at all
>Verstappen, Ricciardo, Ericsson, Grosjean all 180 cm, literally no one ever talks about them being too tall
My question is, is "le hulk is just too tall for F1" simply a meme and a weak defense regarding how shitty his career is and how he doesn't get into good teams ever? I refuse to believe TWO cm is going to make that much of a difference just drive without shoes or with your knees bent a little nigga fuck

Where do you want your track to go senpai?
Just put it right there, Hermann.

Someone is gonna die
>>66627950
You forgot
>this slow
Ain't no one gonna die there. They will die on the 2km+ backstraight when the car ahead has a engine failure and they launch over the rear of them into the crowd.
>>66627947
Yes. Nico Hülkenberg never was good enough for the primetime. However, since he is not a paydriver everyone gets their panties wet for him because "m-muh evil paydrivers"
>>66627950
Wow, this must be the narrowest piece of track since maybe forever. Add some barriers left and right, and how much actual track width do you have left? Barely enough for one car to be able to make the turn?

It won't be as bad as people think it is
We've got tones of those. Valencia bridge, the under the stadium par on Singapore and pretty much all of Monaco is that narrow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5emilZhzI70
And if you follow Formula E, all are street circuit with really narrow passages.
It's just going to be a thing people will forget after the race is over when nothing remarkable happened

No, meme series are stuff like WEC. You know, stuff that is inherently going to fail at some point.

Alain Prost won in '93 when he was 38, Alonso will be turning 38 in 3 seasons from now. Not that I think McLaren will actually get up to that level by then, but anythings possible I guess.

Holy fugg, that description
>There's Sebastian Vettel who's known a love that he's 4 times world and he was inspired from Michael Schumacher (since he's a huge fan of him in Ferrari that he dreamed to be in this famous Italian Racing team, but he finally signed.).
>
And there's Lewis Hamilton who's probably racer that he has a love and hate, he's 3 times world champion that for his reason that he was inspired from the late Ayrton Senna, but pretty worthless because of his domination back in 2014 and 2015 which makes his so called "Team-mate" Nico Rosberg (I mean i felt bad for my other favorite German racer.).
>Who's gonna be in this year of F1 season? A German racer will make his first champion in Ferrari (Not the first time, because he was in Red Bull for his very first world champion in 2010.) or a British racer who will retain the title to make me rather stick to Formula E?
>Even this autist hates Hamilton
>>66628742
>still gave a (You)
You're supposed to greentext the post
>>66628651
Mansell also won very late I think he was also pushing 40
Schumi showed that he still got it in his final Merc season. If Alonso takes a sabbatical then I'm pretty sure that would be his career over but if he stays in F1 and keeps his instincts sharp and whatnot then I'm sure he can keep going for years.
>>66628742
Not bait. Endurance racing has not enough mainstream appeal to justify the bigger budgets of the LMP1 teams. You can watch this play out for decades now with the various prototype series and Le Mans in particular:
>late 70s/early 80s - Le Mans apathy
>late 80s/early 90s - Le Mans hype
>late 90s/early 00s - Le Mans apathy
>late 00s/early 10s - Le Mans hype
The bubble is gonna burst again reasonably soon.
>>66628793
You're right, Mansell was 39 in '92, and won his last race when he was 41 (thanks in large part to Damon & Schumi).
>>66628789
he deserved it, because I almost started an argument
>>66628813
I agree with this. The WEC stuff can be entertaining but it does not have a mainstream appeal. Six hours of racing is great to watch if there is a constant battle going on, but this is rarely the case. Maybe I'm an autist or not autistic enough, but I get no entertainment from watching cars lapping around basically by themselves for hours with maybe a small hope of them battling at some point for 5 mins.
The WEC fans themselves seemingly are quite insecure about their sport as well. There's so many boring races and there's races where there are HOURS of time on track where basically nothing happens. However this then is completely ignored and if you criticize it then you will be told to go back to watching F1 if you don't like it. Also their deeply-rooted inferiority complex towards F1 that manifests itself in "Look how much better we are! Look how much fun this is, look how we have no leadership problems!!! pls!!" is really not that pleasant. The commentators also seemingly have to mention the fact that the current race is "much better than anything we're seeing in F1" etc.
The fact is that the fans are mostly right about their criticism of F1, it's just that they seemingly don't realize that a lot of fans are watching WEC now specifically because F1 is boring. Plus it is stupid to think that the recent influx of interest hasn't come from the fact that there are a lot of drivers who have achieved fame in other series', namely ex-F1 and ex-GP2. Webber's move alone saw a huge boost in interest.

Trav when are you writing for gp update?
>>66628906
I like how every Finnish post has 3 paragraphs.
I watch both F1 and WEC. F1 is really the queen of motorsports but WEC has prototypes AND Gts which shows how advanced the hybrid LMP1 category is. Also 21 race weekends in a season is a lot. WEC has only 10 with more time between them so the fans have to wait more and when it comes it feels more satisfying (at least for me).
Also 6 hours seems a lot but there is a shit ton of action packed in it in all the categories (not just visual but strategical too). Comparing these categories seems pointless to me since in my eyes they are different kinds of fun. Plus there are touring car championships, more GT series, bike series. People can find whatever floats their boats.
>>66629202
I like WEC, but not in the same way as F1. For the duration of every GP I'm glued to the action, pretty much never leaving except to grab a beer or some snacks. Watching WEC races I usually put it on in the background and play video games, make food, read a book, etc. Sometimes I miss some action, but they're usually pretty good with replays. WEC is the comfiest series.
what does /f1/ think of v8 supercars?
>>66629275
>>66629202
Yeah WEC is probably best enjoyed as a "background" thing where you can be doing other stuff at the same time.
>>66629050
What is the Trav meme?
>>66629381
Need to get into it, watched Bathurst and one other race last year, was bretty good. It's one of those series where, if I hear about a race going on, I'll tune in, but I never know when they are actually scheduled to be. When does the season start?
>>66629466
5 weeks ago, phillip island is on next week im pretty sure
>>66629381
it's in retarded times for yuros but it's the best touring car series atm
Mixed class sports car racing is best experienced at the track in person. Road racing in general can be a little short on action when at the track (don't get me wrong, I still love it) but with mixed classes there is constant action which makes it more thrilling compared to open wheel or other single class road racing.
I prefer F1 on TV but prefer WEC live at the track
God I miss the ALMS.

the Chinese GP is set to be the hottest race of the year apparently
that means the supersoft will literally melt as the boiling temperature on top of the extereme tyre deg Shanghai inherently has will destroy it in 5 or 6 laps
and seeing as Haas have gone for a shitton of supersofts, they might choke this race instead of getting lucky.
