>>66438778
breakaway will never happen. can't race on the same tracks as f1. who governs the breakaway series, and what of sponsors?
the sky deal only kills british viewership - there are other markets.
Ferrari and Mercedes are in a league of their own. Williams is further back than last year. Red Bull and Toro Rosso are off the pace as well.
It will require multiple retiremenets from all those teams to see a Force India on the podium and I don't think even le tyre strategy lad cheeky perez is going to be able to pull it off
Hulkenberg's chances of scoring a podium this season: 0%
Hulkenberg's chances of retiring from F1 after 2016: 50%
Hulkenberg's chances of driving for a better team than Force India in the future: 2%
>>66438808
without the UK there is no F1
80+% of the engineers, mechanics, designers, etc etc are British
All but three teams are British
75% of the tech suppliers are based in Britain
without British viewership there will be no new Brits coming into F1 in any capacity and all of those teams, suppliers and jobs will die off. It will take a while but if Bernie doesn't cancel the Sky deal it will be inevitable
>>66438808
there are plenty of tracks not being used. surely they could use whatever tracks are not on the calendar and there are usually countries that want to build their own just to be featured in F1.

Given that F2 hasn't started I don't think it is fair to judge but yeah I think it has done sort of okay.
Would prefer F2 to be more open so that it is also a team development and so a team would be better suited to making the jump to F1.
Also there needs to be an Asian F3 and American F3.
Grand prix weekends should ditch the current support series and run these instead.

>Regional F3 series

So at Silverstone it would be
>British F4
>Euro F3

You just need to get more F3 series going.
Ultimately I'm happy that there is a logically stepped up pyramid of series going F4, F3, F2, F1.

>>66439365

>>66439365
Not that I actually believe this about Palmer but I do think Renault might be pretty decent eventually.
Even Red Bull is hyping up this upcoming Renault power unit upgrade, from Horner to Ricciardo everyone is saying it's going to basically make them much faster. Comparable to Ferraris 2014-2015 progress. And Renault didn't use many credits this off season as they are focusign them all on this big update. Even now their engine is seemingly a lot better than it was last year.
If professional Renault shittalker Horner is willing to praise how great this update is going to be, it suggests that it's probably going to be very good indeed. Red Bull claim that it is going to be so good that they will close the gap to Ferrari with it. This also suggests that Renault the team is going to see similar development in performance as well which could raise them to the levels of Force India and the points-scoring midfield in general. Update supposedly coming for Canada.

is there any reason why DRS shouldn't be allowed to be used ad libitum during races? it would add another dimension of skill, who has the balls to keep it open the longest before braking for example, and it would make much more sense than "you're allowed to use it only on a certain straight and only when someone's in front of you", which is retarded as fuck
or just get rid of it
>>66439848
Weren't there some races in the first year of DRS where the whole circuit was a DRS zone? I can't remember
And I think it would be a good idea if the power of the DRS was reduced a bit. At its current levels it would provide such a strong advantage that it would be unfair for the driver in front. But it would be cool to see DRS being used in parts of the track that aren't straights, like e.g. Blanchimont at Spa or 130R in Suzuka or Copse or any other high speed corner
Alternatively it could be a system where every driver has 10-20 instances of 10 seconds of DRS that they can use whenever and whereever on the track but that would be really gimmicky
>>66439848
It meant as a way to recover the time lost following another car, not an overtaking aid.
So as it currently is in theory if the cars had absolutely zero effect on each others aero then the current DRS passes would happen naturally.
Also they don't want them using it everywhere as it is considered potential dangerous in case it jams open.
>>66439848
Because of Monaco 2011, and the Perez incident, I guess. But it was supposed to be so, at first.
>>66439891
They could use DRS outside of zones in quali and practise. Red Bull would go flat with DRS open through 130R and blanchimont because only they could with the downforce they made.
>>66439848
DRS is a measure to counteract the effect of dirty air, not just to make laptimes faster and reduce downforce for lulz

>>66440855

Mark my words. Hamilton is winning the ship this year, then relaxing. maybe taking Kimi's seat at Ferrari so he can have "raced at Ferrari" on his resume. Or going to Haas where he can just kick back, play at being an American rapper, and do a few NASCAR races.
>>66440979
I just don't want to predict HAMROSVET every race (and I'm a Nico fan, nothing against Lewis as driver tho)
>>66440855
Easily Vettel. Alonso has 3 massive issues:
>worst team player on the grid by a big margin
>struggles in genuinely fast cars
>his car development input is very poor
His toxicity alone meant that he had to go, but even without that, he simply wasn't good enough to win the championship. With Vettel and an almost brand new team built around him, regardless of whether he is slower or faster than Alonso, they have a much more serious chance of winning.
If Montezemolo had lost his job prior to 2005, Ferrari would be in a much better place right now. Schumacher&Massa would've easily carried the team to several more titles, and then, with MSC's guidance, they could easily get Vettel to replace him after retiring.
Can we all agree by now that F1 is pathetic? Who disagrees tips fedoras anyways.

Yeah what we need is more shitty feeder series' where the only point is to showcase talent for F1. Even structuring this whole thing so that all of these series' serve no other purpose than to get more drivers into F1
Considering there are drivers like Button, Massa, Alonso, Räikkönen etc who will have careers spanning 15-20 years or more in F1.
Of course all these series' are going to be 100% money dominated and the big teams are going to employ more mechanics, more staff, invest in better setup research etc etc and soon enough talent alone is not important at all.
Who is the last driver to even make it to F1 on merit alone? Like literally no sponsors or significant backing?
Scouts and key personnel have hand-picked talent for ages. There doesn't need to be a million different "road to F1" type series' which all focus on getting to F1. I mean even most GP2 champions don't even have hugely successful F1 careers or F1 careers at all while talent like Kimi or Verstappen etc got drives being handpicked by specific people
>>66442308
>Who is the last driver to even make it to F1 on merit alone? Like literally no sponsors or significant backing?
merit is what lands the sponsors and backing. literally.
>>66442272
Last time Alonso really had a very very good car was McLaren 2007 and he tied with a rookie Hamilton. Of course it was a clusterfuck season but still it's indicative of something. He had some good Ferraris but I wouldn't really call them great cars.
Alonso really doesn't even seem like he is that unbelievable at qualifying anymore. I don't think that was his strength in the first place. On race day he is supreme and his strengths have always been in the races and just somehow being faster than others in the races. His wheel to wheel racing and car control skills are exceptional and I think this is basically where most of his reputation comes from. I'm honestly a bit surprised that the media likes him at all considering how much shit he's caused and how many scandals he's been a part of.
Point being is that Vettel might not be quite as good of a RACER as Alonso, but under current regulations where racing is secondary and quali and consistency and all that great stuff is paramount to winning, I'm fairly sure Vettel would beat Alonso in the same car. Vettel is definitely a better qualifier, probably the best qualifier on the grid right now.
Alonso had so much input at Ferrari, his opinions were what mattered (Massa has talked about this). The cars were developed to what Fernando wanted and so many times Ferrari only realized that they're actually pretty shit is when they actually saw the true pace of the other cars. It's not 100% Alonsos fault but if you're in a big team like Ferrari and you are the driver being listened to, and you cannot create a supreme car (often quite far from supreme) during your whole time there despite having an infinite budget, it says something about Alonso's personality, development ability or both.
>>66442378
Not entirely, or else Frijns would probably be in F1 by now.
>>66442308
I agree issues will occur but the single-make structure will stop it becoming another F3000 which burned because you could only win with one/two teams.
>>66442867
I'm kind of wondering why there hasn't been an attempt at an alternative for F1. Considering how mismanaged F1 is right now, it really wouldn't be that difficult to establish a crowd-pleaser series similar to F1. Bring back huge loud engines, less aero, better tires and bam you've got faster laptimes than F1.
I mean of course it's not a simple thing to do but I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to capitalize on this chaos. If there was a single seater series that was faster than F1, I would watch it. People even watch Formula E and that's basically glorified electric carting. I'm saying that fans are bored, and want someone to actually listen to them, and I doubt that many people have soem sort of personal affinity with F1 or the FIA itself. If a competing series could attract just one big constructor to join, it could result in big things
>>66442980
Also sticking to more traditional circuits/countries would be better, fuck going to China/India/Korea. Bring back some of the old European circuits that folk actually attended.
>>66443193
>Bring back some of the old European circuits that folk actually attended.
ironically the dwindling attendance rates were what killed circuits like Magny-Cours or Jerez
>>66443757
True. There are many factors to consider though. Location, quality of track, quality of racing on track, price of tickets is a big one. I don't really know how much tickets to races cost nowadays but I can guarantee that they are overpriced as hell.
Why would anyone pay hundreds of euros to watch F1 from the grandstands in the current era? The cars aren't even loud anymore so there isn't even that novelty factor.
Also the sport is objectively better to follow from a TV screen lol
>>66443886
I also think the overall situation is that the deals that tracks are forced to sign if they want a race are so incredibly expensive, that the track organizer people have to charge ridiculous amounts for tickets.
This recent push for a more exciting quali and FPs etc came from the promoters/organizers in order to improve attendance.
It's honestly amazing that F1 has to be so jewy about everything and fuck over the circuits, yet simultaneously have no problem throwing 50 million to Ferrari every year as a participation bonus, and generally passing around prize money in the 10s of millions like candy, whilst still making so much of a profit that the owner is a multi-billionaire (3.9 billion USD in 2015)
>>66443886
>Why would anyone pay hundreds of euros to watch F1 from the grandstands in the current era?
Why not? Part of the reason I went to Silverstone in 2014 was because the level of noise had become low enough that I wouldn't be putting my ears in danger. While the whole experience did feel overpriced, I greatly enjoyed it overall, so ultimately I think I've got my money's worth out of it. Even managed to grab a photo with Hamilton.
Currently debating going to Monza this year just in case Massa and Raikkonen decide to retire soon or the track doesn't get a contract for 2017. Monza generally has poor racing, so I'm banking on the tifosi-centric atmosphere to carry the experience.

Use the softies in your ear, and cover them with muffs. These days there are a lot of decent, and inexpensive, electronic ear muffs that will block out harmful sound, and amplify normal sounds so you can hear them.

You don't even need to get that complicated. Just look at any aspect of his driving in the first half of 2012.

>>66446161
Mercedes have done all 8 days of testing in 2016 solely on the medium compound. That's more than the entire calendar's worth of race distance on the same exact compound.
Them being insane on it is pretty much expected at this point. On other compounds, nowhere near as much, as seen via Vettel and Raikkonen's pace prior to the red flag.
>>66446161
Because Mercedes has shown their cars to be uncontested winners on medium tires. They were having a hard time on the softs and super softs though.

>>66446079
to be honest, new f1 is too boring for me to analyze drivers lines, but the driver is the one that ultimately picks the racing lines that he thinks will help him most, so i dont see why that is an evidence.
>>66446177
the argument was not that vettel is a bad driver. the point that is being made is that if vettel had a rival in the class of ricardo and alonso in the same car, he would not be a 4 time world champion.
>>66446203
A driver's lines can be easily harmed by unwanted behavior caused by the car being defined by a specific set of regulations. Drivers like Vettel (early 2012, or his obscenely high tyre wear in 2014) and Button (who specifically says the pace-dominant MP4-27 of 2012 is the worst car he's ever driven) have a hard time adapting to this.
Drivers like Alonso, on the other hand, make up for this by forcing cars to continue to behave the way they want them to, as opposed to simply allowing the car to be developed in a way that maximizes its pace for that set of regulations. Problem is, this very approach of his limited the performance of his #5 F2012 so much that Massa, of all the people, outpaced him in equal machinery in the second half and nearly outqualified him in India despite Alonso having boatloads of upgrades.
>>66446273
That argument is irrelevant, because the Vettel of early 2012 and 2014 is not the same by any stretch of the imagination as the Vettel from 2010, 2011, 2013 and especially the second half of 2012.
>>66446203
the things that changed in the cars between 2013 and 2014 were all things that went directly against vettel's driving style, and it took him a while to adjust his style to suit the new cars
>>66446273
but he beat alonso with a worse car
>>66446203
Well you can look at it this way. If the car is better, you can push it harder and have really aggressive lines. Racing is very mental so if a driver feels good it tends to show.
>>66446273
I don't think anyone else would have exploited the EBD better than Vettel, not Ricciardo, not Alonso, not Hamilton. Vettel deserved every one of his WDC's
>>66446273
Ricciardo can't beat JEV or Kvyat
there's no way Mateschitz would just sit on the three best drivers in the world and risk his teams losing multiple championships by keeping Webber instead of them.
>>66446330
another recent example of this is Bottas
in 2014 he managed pretty ideal lines despite the car having zero downforce
in 2015 the car was markedly harder to drive and it showed
going for a cheeky HAM ROS RAI in badgergp lads
>>66446432
Massa struggled with that even more in 2015, as yet another example.
>>66446289
it is a sad indication of the current era when drivers are faulted for driving over the capabilities of the car. in the past that was an indication of a great driver. if what you want to see is a driver that will drive the car just like the engineers want the car to be driven, you might as well hand over the driving to a driving program that will do it better.
>>66446559
>in the past that was an indication of a great driver.
wrong
>>66446330
ok, so he was pushing hard, but apparently he is not as good at pushing cars as ricardo or alonso. that is a negative in my book. vettel only races by committee, he does exactly what his engineers tell him to do, and if the car is fast, he will be fast.
>>66446636
>apparently he is not as good at pushing cars as ricardo or alonso.
what a load of rubbish. Vettel is possibly the best qualifier on the grid, certainly way above Alonso as well as Ricciardo
>>66446559
>the capabilities of the car
Those capabilities are created through their own limitations, as, again, Alonso showed in 2012 when he threw the title away.
>in the past that was an indication of a great driver
So people have their own, usually flawed, ways in which they interpret performance and everything that goes into it? That's nothing new.
Also, that hasn't been the norm for the last 2 decades at the absolute least. If you want to go back another one, Prost's the only one who even comes close to being one such exception, and he, too, had his limits compared to Senna, Piquet and Mansell.
>if what you want to see is a driver that will drive the car just like the engineers want the car to be driven, you might as well hand over the driving to a driving program that will do it better.
To be fair, that's exactly why I no longer watch any 4-wheel motorsport other than F1. Drivers in other categories are so far off the limit that it's laughable.
I'd also love to see those driving programs you speak of once they're brought to a high enough level.
>>66446559
its impossible to drive beyond the capabilities of the car, whats possible is driving the car in a way that exploits its characteristics better than anyone originally thought was possible, but if someone does that then thats down to a bad estimate of the car's characteristics rather than exceptional driving
>>66446636
he is better at pushing (as in driving fast?) than ricciardo and alonso, but when he doesn't understand why the car is doing something unexpected or when he doesn't know how the car will react to a certain input (ie not having confidence), he can't drive as fast as he could if it did what he expected, just like any other driver in any series ever
>>66446613
being able to drive above the limits if the car is an necessary skill set that drivers should have. sure, it is not always the fastest way around a track all the time, but in a championship fight with closely matched vehicles, one's ability to over drive the car and make the difference is what champions do. but in today f1 where drivers are coached by race engineers and are told to drive to a delta, that aspect of the sport is dead and that is why the "sport" is out of f1 and the reason fans are turning away.
>>66446743
maybe he lacks car control. yet another negative.
>>66446749
>sure, it is not always the fastest way around a track all the time
It is never the fastest way around a track
>>66446749
>above the limits
There is no such thing as 'above the limits' unless you, as an outside figure, are taking your own limited observations of what a car is and isn't capable of way too seriously.
>and that is why the "sport" is out of f1 and the reason fans are turning away
And that's what we call delusion. Combined with speaking in other people's place, sure, but largely delusion.
>>66446780
he doesn't though? he makes far fewer mistakes than most other drivers
>>66446749
>sure, it is not always the fastest way around a track all the time, but in a championship fight with closely matched vehicles, one's ability to over drive the car and make the difference is what champions do
so what you're saying is what makes the difference in a championship fight is driving slower?
I can only imagine what /spee/ would have said about Jim Clark. He was very smooth, very controlled, and very very quick. I have a feeling he would have been torn to pieces here because he didn't 'appear' to be trying very hard.
>>66446799
i dont know if you know, but things are engineered to a limit, but those limits can be surpassed in the real world. if a car is designed to handle a certain gforce, or brake x meters before turning into a corner, it is possible for a driver to past those limits and give engineers a new target for future designs.
>>66446889
please stop posting fellow Ameriburger, you're making us look bad.
>>66446920

>>66446833
if you push the car at the wrong stage in the race, then you will risk the rest of the race. but when the time comes to put the hammer down, burn all the rubber you got and break away from the rest, then you be good at driving at the limit and over the limit long enough to make a difference.
>>66446978

>>66447024

>>66447069
imo lewis hamilton is a bigger carbabby but the mercedes has been more of a lewis hamilton car than a nico rosberg car up until the end of last year
>>66447099
Ok fair enough, so then I guess we can agree there will never be a carbabby bigger than Jacques Villeneuve?
>>66447069
car babies the whole lot of them. f1 is dead. it is no longer a sport, but a demonstration.
>>66447069
i don't think so. he got a few podiums and a fairly dominant win in those mediocre Mercs they had 2010-2012 (and two wins in the good 2013 Merc, but the on-track success of that car owes a lot to having Lewis and Nico as its drivers)
if anything i think Nico is quite underrated because there is that spectre of being a "carbabby" hanging about him, that he wouldn't be a contender without that car but that's true for nearly every champion

It's really funny that they're so much in debt. They even finished unnaturally high last year due to McLaren.
The 2016 Sauber seems equally bad as the 2015 was at the end of the season when all the teams had out-developed them. Except this time they don't even have the money to keep up development meaning they will literally finish behind Manor (thanks to a cheeky Manor P9 in some rainfest race somewhere)
I've wondered for a long time why they are even in the sport anymore. They're shit and have no money and don't seem to care. Whats the point? To have the priviledge of working with great future GOATS like Ericsson and Nasr?
>>66451069
In 2014 they were one retirement in Monaco away from finishing behind Caterham and therefore last in the WCC iirc, that's how bad they were
It'd be nice if Bernie took control of the team, relaunched Brabham and used it as a vehicle to promote the companies whose executives he's all cushy with while enabling young drivers, engineers and other team personnel a better stepping stone from junior series, even if the car ends up being a fair bit off the pace

Yeah that's true. Wasn't the current hybrid engine formula specifically requested by the manufacturers though, for "road car relevance"?
Has there been any confirmation on what the engine is going to be for 2017 if the rule changes go through?
I don't understand why F1 would want such huge barriers to entry in their sport that you will literally need hundeds of millions just to operate in the midfield and if you want to be a works team you have to spend gigantic amounts developing a hugely complex power unit
It's going to come crashing down sooner or later, next economic crash will probably kill F1
Thoughts on this?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/123480/renault-wants-f1-fuel-limit-scrapped
Kind of a half-good idea IMO. I don't know if it would make anything better because the tires would still wear out when pushing and the cars would be even heavier, meaning even more strain on the tires
If F1 did the following changes
>higher fuel limit - e.g. 150 kg of fuel total for race
>make cars lighter somehow
>provide tires with actual mechanical grip and no artificial degradation
And you would have the fastest F1 cars of all time pretty much
>>66450970

I'm sure 99% of people thought Ericsson was done after his abysmal Caterham season, yet he somehow landed the Sauber seat despite Sauber already having plenty of drivers to choose from. He supposedly has an individual backer (as in a person, not a company) who brings in similar amounts to what Nasr brings with Banco de Brazil which is certainly in the 10s of millions per year
Not that he is a good driver but that sort of money does a lot of the talking. Maybe he'll find himself at Renault or Force India in the future. If Gutierrez and Sutil managed to return to the sport after taking seasons off then I'm sure Ericsson could do it as well.

Yeah Ericsson just isn't that good of a driver overall. He hasn't really done anything impressive despite having a pretty good car for the start of 2015. He showed some balls in defending close to the limits of the regulations on a few occasions but other than that he has been quite anonymous.
Finland does have a few hopefuls but it all comes down to money and getting decent drives. Bottas made it to F1 with a huge help from Häkkinen and there has always been this sort of Finns helping other Finns get into F1 thing, e.g. Häkkinen's and JJ Lehto's careers were assisted by Rosberg and Häkkinen basically retired partially to give his seat to Kimi. This seems to be getting kind of broken now though as Kimi certainly won't involve himself in F1 as a non-driver because he basically hates everything about it that isn't driving. And Häkkinen seems pretty preoccupied with Bottas and other business ventures as he is now a full time businessman.
What I'm basically saying is that I don't know if there are any Finns who could currently afford the standard ladder climb to F1, i.e. all the way up to GP2 etc. Still it seems that Bottas is going to be the only Finn in F1 for at least a few years if not more when Kimi retires

I love this sport where manufacturers have the biggest say when it comes to regulation changes and the dominant teams will do everything they can and threaten to leave the sport if they don't get to keep the same shitty regulations in which they can remain dominant, Mercedes obviously isn't the only or first team to do so but it still pisses me off. If it was up to Mercedes, they would keep the same regulations no matter what, even if it runs F1 into the ground and the sport is finished.

Niko Kari does indeed seem hopeful. He is only 16 though and his actual performance is still quite unknown. He's raced 1 season of single seaters (which he did win lol) so it's impossible to really judge how good he is. Hopefully he will impress in Formula 3.
He's apparently a test driver for Toro Rosso now. Aligning yourself with the Red Bull junior programme is good and bad. I mean even someone like Sainz is likely going to be out of a drive after 2016 and JEV, although not great was as good as Ricciardo and now he is seemingly out of the sport for good. Kvyat might be looking for a drive after 2016 as well because Red Bull obviously want to keep Max and Max has already implied he is going to "stay loyal". Point being it's going to be brutal if he joins Toro Rosso in the future.

i've been in a relationship with the same girl for 6 years, so maybe my experience isn't as valuable as others as i haven't dated that many people.
but overall, yes, of course you would. my gf isn't interested in motorsports herself but still gets up to watch MWL with me, not because she's a fan of but because it's time we spend together. if you do something with a good attitude, no matter if it's something you find boring, you'll eventually make it enjoyable. she for example, now roots everytime for hamilton because she knows that i'm really hoping cuckberg can win a title and stop the HWL at least for a season, so just to play she roots for choco.
i do the same things like taking her to see the cheesy romantic movies, i don't like them that much but i know she loves them, specially the ones based on john green books. actually i did read some of them with her and they aren't that bad.
in conclusion, i think menial things like liking motorsports shouldn't affect what you want in a relationship. i think it tells more of a relationship a girl that doesn't like it but it's willing to spend the time with you nevertheless than a girl that watches with you because she likes F1 herself.
just my 2 cents
>>66454493
>she for example, now roots everytime for hamilton because she knows that i'm really hoping cuckberg can win a title and stop the HWL at least for a season, so just to play she roots for choco.
The actual reason she loves Lewis is because he's black, just like she is, while you love Rosberg because you aspire to one day become as pale and white as him.

Off-season was so comfy bros, with the occasional news and memes I was able to maintain my normal life. But now the non-stop onslaught of F1 is ruining my life again! It doesn't help that I think the Melbourne GP was pretty gud, I kept my hype levels through the roof. I hope Bahrain will be boring.

>>66464938
only because he had many times the experience in formula 3 than verstappen or ocon had.
he spent six fucking years in formula three, a series where you should win in your second year if you want to be a hotshot in f1. he spent so long in the series that the FIA had to create a new rule especially for him stopping drivers from staying in f3 for longer than 3 seasons (iirc, not sure on the number).
verstappen and ocon both spent only a single season in formula 3 before graduating. ocon won the championship in his first year, verstappen came third. felix came eighth that year. eighth. in his fifth year and sixth season in formula 3, and he won his first formula 3 championship last season, entirely down to experience along with driving for the undisputed quickest team.
if felix was put in the mercedes, he'd still find a way to never score a single point. that's how abysmal he is.
