I agreed with Ferrari's aggressive strategy.
It would've worked as long as Vettel created enough of a gap to make the next pit stop. but the super softs didn't give him enough laps. They should've been fast enough though being on two compounds softer than Mercedes. It just shows how far the gap really is between Ferrari and Mercedes. Ferrari couldn't build a 20 second gap despite being two compounds softer than Mercedes on the harder medium tyre.

Ferrari could've gone with the Softs after the red flag to get more laps in that one stint and then put on the super softs at the very end. But the delta between the soft and medium tyre isn't as big so you go with the faster super softs to try and build the gap.

No he hit a Japanese man. I agree, but I also think that it would be much safer if they just attached like 2-feet worth of barriers material surrounding the tractor itself which went all the way to the ground and up to the windows, like a full-length skirt kinda. Still safer under VSC/SC though.

that post is referring to Mad Amx and his tantrums about his pit stop and being stuck behind Sainz, almost losing it out of 12, and his little spin into 15 near the end of the race

still though, who is the biggest lil' bitch on the grid right now: HAM or VES? you could argue HAM should know better being an adult, but Max is more annoying and doesn't have the pressure of leading a championship team.
>>
>>66357330
Verstappen is way more annoying but he kinda gets a pass because he's 18 and Jos has probably fucked up his social skills for life. HAM is by far the worst because he has pretty much no right to bitch about anything ever, and because he has legions of fans that claim that he never does this and refuse to call a spade a spade, because surely they're just "jealous" or "racist" or a "hater". There was a bit of that after Aus GP from amx fans and it worries me because I want to like him.

Complete F1 noob here, but I have a question that has been on my mind for a while.

How often do people die in F1 racing? It seems like it must be the most dangerous sport on the planet. I've seen many gifs and webms of crashes and it blows my mind that people can survive some of these accidents. How many people die in a given year?

>>
>>66357923
But seriously

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_fatalities

Until the 80s there were a lot deaths

After that, in official sessions, there were 2 deaths in the 80s, 2 in the 90s and than we stayed 20 years without any deaths until Bianchi in 2014
>>
>>66357923
The last death in F1 was in 2014, but before that we haven't had one since 1994

including other forms of racing usually like 0-2 people die at a high level every year, sometimes 3 or 4 but rarely more than that. for example i've watched racing intensely since 2005-2006, probably around 60-100 races per year in various series, and it doesn't feel like i've seen more than maybe 10-15 deaths live
>>

almost definitely less than 10 actually, more like 6 or 7

During a crash are the drivers told to let go of the steering wheel?

A thread or two ago with all the crash webms it looked that way with the exception of one that held on for longer than the others. It must be such a difficult thing to remember to do during a potentially life or death moment.
>>
>>66359031
Yeah the impact can kick the wheels one way or the other which will translate to the steering wheel and can injure your arms. Also, if you have time, it allows you to adopt a brace position which can lessen injuries as well.

No, this is not exciting the current regulations are shit. This is not what the fans want to see! Overtaking should be easier and limited to DRS zones ONLY. You can't just let the regulations be what they are and have good racing occur naturally, you have to engineer it with tires, DRS, handicaps, reverse grids, new qualis etc.

What a joke why would anyone want to see stuff like this
>>
BTW it's pretty much confirmed that Verstappen fucked up his own strategy when pitting after Sainz.

I think the Toro Rosso boys are honestly just expecting too much from the car and are pushing it more than others without any real pragmatic regard for the tire deg (this is obviously a fault in F1 but it's something a driver should be able to adapt to). Now that the engineer cannot "make" the strategy for the driver and tell the driver how his pace is and how much life is left in his tires, it's just clear that Max fucked up. He was losing speed but was still lapping faster than most other cars on the same tire, and because he was feeling tire deg he decided the tires were done and had to pit, even though he was still faster than others around him.

What a hothead
>>
>>66359605
What is he doing?
>>
>>66359690
I don't think anyone was denying this, it's fairly clear that he went in when the team wasn't ready because he didn't make his desires clear and just complained.
>>
>>66359794

Yeah I don't mean just the failed communication, I mean that it was a failure in actual strategy as well. He felt as if his tires were so done that he needed a new set, despite lapping faster than other cars.
>>
>>66357923
I'd say Top Fuel Hydro is quite a bit more dangerous. Most forms of motorsport require bravery; I think Top Fuel Hydro requires a death wish.

>>
>>66359846
Ah, fair point, although honestly you could argue that if he's lapping at that pace on tyres he feels have a lack of grip, putting him on fresher ones may have allowed him to make progress much faster; the sensation of losing grip is enough to probably bring caution to even hotheads like mad amx.
>>
>>66359992
And they still fucking wonder why viewing figures are dropping. F1 is just going to fall into utter obscurity.
>>
i did some thought and i can't think of a single way that F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport
>>
>>66359996
One could argue that the Formula 1 of decades ago was equally stupid - and yet some people hold those years in the highest regard.

The Figure 8 stuff strikes me as similar to the Formula 1 sprint to the first turn: F1 fans love the titillation of the fear a crash, and because of that it's the most exciting part of the race. Except the Figure 8 guys do it all race long.

Though I can imagine having all those Figure 8 drivers so close to each other must be pretty upsetting for a person from Finland!

yeah, it was strange because usually the leading car of the two teammates gets called in the pits first. It's a bad result considering the Toro Rossos were running up in 4th and 5th early on.

Toro Rosso don't want to admit that they have a "#1 driver", the team doesn't want to be seen as favoring any driver over the other.

and being in the Red Bull Development program is the worst. They are always impatient and getting rid of drivers unless you turn out like Vettel. Even if Kvyat and Ricciardo don't perform, Helmet Marko & Red Bull have someone else waiting to take his place.

and it's nepotism since both are second generation drivers and their well-respected fathers have political power in the paddock. so neither of the dads want their kid to be the team's "#2" driver.

Verstappen will learn you gotta keep a cool head and stay calm during a race. and drivers in general need to stop bitching about team orders. If your'e faster than your teammate then use DRS and pass them.

Depends on whether you're thinking like royalty or like a serf.

As a serf, other than the outright expense (and perhaps an argument about which kart-driving monkey has the best hand-eye coordination), you're correct.

But the point of the "pinnacle of motorsport" puffery is there are people who love worshiping their supposed social superiors - the kind of folks who love being a subject of royalty (whether economic or inbred).

You have to remember that Formula 1 isn't primarily about auto racing, it's an racing-based soap opera about the follies and foibles of the ultra-rich (i.e., not the plebs).

Just listen to Sky's Ted cum and start farting in the pit lane during the red flag in Australia as his "gladiators" are walking so close to him! Almost as if they were normal people! Those "gladiators"!

So the "pinnacle of motorsport" is what people who either like to royalty worship, or else elevate themselves to racing-fan royalty relative to fans of other forms of racing, tell themselves.

Racing is racing.

(Caveat: In the pits, whether dirt track, drag strip, NASCAR, F1, wherever, the guys who turn the wrenches are pretty much the same: racers. Which is why I prefer to be in the pits rather than the stands.)

If F1 cars produce enough downforce to drive upside down, what's to stop them from putting vertical loops in circuits sometime in the distant future?

Seems like a good idea to me.

Yeah, pretty much he put too much power down too quickly and lost the rear, Nico couldn’t control the wheelspin. And electronic “driver aids” like Traction Control, ABS, active suspension, and then FRIC, have been banned for awhile.
But there are ways around it, the teams can disguise it with their engine software and mapping different engine modes. There’s “torque control” and you can change the power delivery. Everything now is similar to avionics fly-by-wire systems. The pedals used to be mechanically linked to the engine and brakes so you had to be careful how you pressed them not to lock the brakes or spin the wheels. But now the pedals are attached to an electronic sensor that measures your input on the pedal and translates it to an electronic signal that is sent to the engine/or brakes. So there’s gotta be more ways to alter that, so you can set the sensitivity really low or really high.

I was hype for the Mugello 12H just to see this faggot and Prokop race together, and the two Glickenhaus SCG cars that were in action. And it was cool seeing those Renault R.S.01 race outside it's one-make series Sport Trophy.

Both Glickenhaus cars retired with turbo failure. and that faggot crashed on the first lap and ruined the race. They should've let Prokop start the race. He can't finish a WRC rally, I think Monte Carlo this year was his last chance. Maybe he should try DTM next. Eventually nowhere is going to take him if he can't stop crashing. maybe FE.

But that's aero downforce, which varies with speed, and at the top of the loop the speed is low enough that the top speed "drive on the ceiling" aero numbers aren't available. That means g-loading downforce from radial acceleration has to make up the difference, and the compression g-loads for doing a vertical loop of any practical size are barely survivable.

They *can* be survived, but the window for success is very narrow: too slow into the loop and the car falls off the top, but too fast into the loop and the driver blacks out from g-load at the bottom.

It seems with these new power units the best way to gain performance is through engine software/mapping and the different engine modes. It’s like electronic warfare, with the right software you can gain performance immediately without having to manufacture and build a new part. The current rules around designing an F1 car are so restrictive that it’s the one area in the rulebook where you have some freedom.
I guess the engine software/mapping is probably the next step in evolution. The V10s and V8s through the mid 2000s were high tech and had engine software. Then with the 2.4L V8s and no refueling using engine mapping to run different fuel flow mixes became more important. Then Vettel with Newey at Red Bull Renault together came up with the exhaust-blown rear diffuser where the exhaust gases would blow over the rear of the car helping to increase rear grip and keep the car pinned to the ground. And it was mostly Renault that then came up with an improvement after with the off-throttle rear blown diffuser, where even when the driver was lifting off the pedal the engine would still know to send exhaust gas out the engine and to the back of the car; to help keep the rear downforce and grip. And this was controlled through engine mapping & software. Effectively making the car more user-friendly or easier to drive because of the increased downforce.
>>
So Renault should get equal credit for Red Bull’s success, it’s a shame they broke up so quickly. When Red Bull were winning Renault never got any of the credit, it was all thanks to Newey’s genius chassis, and then when Red Bull were losing Renault got all of the blame. No wonder they gave some corporate excuse for leaving Red Bull because it was not an “economical marketing strategy”. You might as well go and make your own team.

it used to be. not in this current form.
F1 was always about the fast cars and high technology for the time period. F1 could always boast that it had the highest cornering speeds. It's rocket-science but on the ground, upside down airplanes. There was a time in the 70s when the Porsche Le Mans prototypes and Group C cars were more powerful HP than F1 cars, and at one time they had a higher top speed (mostly because of the Le Mans track has a long straight to hit top speeds).

A lot of the F1 lap records (same track configuration) are still held by the 2004-era cars. That's considered the "peak" era of regulations when the F1 cars were at their fastest. V10s, lots of aero, and sticky Bridgestone tires. and iirc you could change gearboxes and engines whenever you wanted, so they didn't have to last more than one race.

yeah pretty much this >>66360542.

In terms of stats like just pure straight line speed it's not like a Top Fuel dragster. and they don't do banking at 180mph like in turn left. It's the combination of the high cornering speeds and the locations. Certain tracks, like MotoGP don't go to Spa because a bike with a rider couldn't really handle the compression going up Eau Rouge. Nothing can take the S's at Suzuka or Maggots&Beckets (which the COTA S's are based on) like an F1 car.
>>
>>66360486
Foust and Tracy's speed through that loop was barely over 50mph, and yet at the bottom of the loop they were pulling 7 G's.

So I think whether a driver would black out and for how long depends on how badly they get the speed wrong. ;) (Riders on roller coasters will sometimes suffer momentary blackouts-grayouts in high-speed loops.)

I definitely agree that drivers might die from other effects instead, such as the bursting of the arteries to the brain, or if they're fortunate merely suffer paralysis from spinal compression.

Though a few drops off the top from going too slow would certainly lead to a quicker implementation of a closed cockpit.

Tilke should get right on this.

and that's why Michelin didn't want to make a comeback with a new F1 tyre because they refused to design a tyre that degrades on purpose. Which is what F1 wants. and now they are the top brand in sportscar racing and dominate Le Mans. and they don't need F1. and Pirelli are feeling the marketing backlash because F1 advertises that your tyres are shit. But the restrictions placed on Pirelli by F1 means they can't really develop the best possible tyres that they are capable of making.

Gee I sure wonder why Renault never got much of the credit for their wins.

Oh wait.

Renault almost managed to singlehandedly throw away Vettel's championship on two occasions. In all 4 of their championship-winning years, they had a weaker engine, yet in 2011 and 2013 they were carried by Newey's aero dominance and in 2010 and 2012 they could've won so much more easily without Renault's exploding engines or alternators.

>>
>>66359656
yeah I get what you're saying.
F1 wouldn't need gimmicks like DRS and crappy tyres, new formats etc, if they had genuinely close racing. Focus on fixing the core regulations on how you design an F1 car; so we can get closer racing. Now you see overtaking only because there's such a huge difference in the performance of the cars/power units. It's like you only get passed because my car is so much shittier than yours. Vettel or Hamilton can have a bad start and easily make their way up through the field to the podium.

These new power units were supposed to attract more manufactures to the sport and instead it's still the same big three plus a struggling Honda. And the gaps between the teams are even further apart. The competition was closer during the previous 2.4L V8s.

I don't necessarily think it should be so that if you have a faster car, you'll be able to pass a slower car. We've seen this so many times in the current regulations - Kimi fucks up and is last, ends the race where he would have finished anyway. We've seen similar rises with Hamilton and Rosberg as well. Melbourne in particular was interesting because you could defend and overtaking was hard. Cars out of position and actually being able to defend is good for racing. If Melbourne had a 1 km DRS straight, Hamilton would have been back to 3rd or 2nd after 2 laps.

Plus thanks to Hamilton and Kubica now you can't even really protect your line anymore so "defending" in a DRS zone is basically positioning your car once and hoping that the car behind with 20 km/h temporarily higher top speed doesn't breeze past you

I don't know why FIA thought that their most technically advanced and expensive PU regulations would interest new manufacturers, especially when these regulations are going to be in F1 for like 3 years anyway. You could argue "road car relevancy" but isn't that what WEC is focusing on anyway and F1 really isn't supposed to be an ad campaign for a manufacturer anyway (even though it is). Next they'll probably introduce Pirelli road tires because Pirelli requests more relevancy to their road car business.

>Quite another question: gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race – I don’t remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?
>>
>>66362593
what are their answers reeeeeeeeeeeeee
>>
>>66362614
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>SV: Can you repeat the question?! Yeah, I remember the question. I think it depends all on how the monkey grows up these days. I think it’s a different generation of monkeys that Niki was talking about probably compared to monkeys we have today. Obviously there’s a lot of buttons on the steering wheel, probably too many but I think for us, we grow up like that, it’s a different generation. I think if you put a modern phone in Niki’s hands, I’m not sure he would know what to do – sorry Niki. I think it’s what you get used to. For sure, when I started, for example, in Formula One, there were a lot of procedures I had to learn, a lot of buttons I needed to know how to control etc. But it’s part of cars nowadays. If you jump into a normal road car, there’s also plenty of buttons but in the end the most important bit is the steering wheel, turning the car left and right and the accelerator at the bottom. I think the basics haven’t changed and that’s the important thing, that the sport remains as it has been many many years ago despite how many buttons you have on the steering wheel

>NR: I’ll make this a bit shorter. I think we need to just make sure that the sport stays simple for the fans, that’s the most important thing. The direction, it’s all great, technology fantastic, hybrid power, buttons, everything, that’s all great but we need to make sure that for the fans it stays simple enough. That’s something for the medium term future, that we need to keep an eye on. That’s it

To me, it's harder to determine whether or not someone is genuine through mere words alone. Demeanor, inflections etc all add so much more to the way a person expresses their thoughts.

Nico strikes me as being extremely fake. It's easy to see that in person, but nowhere near as much through text alone unless you're already biased against him and know what he's really like.

consistently the funniest driver out there. why did seb develop a great sense of humor when he moved to ferrari?
>>
>>66363089
He always was silly. Just ask James Allen about how much people loved him while he was at Toro Rosso.

Red Bull's PR scheme was awful for him, and Mateschitz coddled Wobbler so much that Vettel couldn't do anything about the fact that they didn't get along at all.

He has always been funny
>>
>>66363085
Thx bro i hope your not shitting me
>>
>>66363089

He was always funny, it's just that it wasn't portrayed as much as he was le evil brat at Red Bulll and Webber was le GOAT reasonable man (even though he acted more like a child than Vettel). He also toned it down himself in public because he knew it wouldn't fly that well when half the grid and fans hate you for winning.

He was also acutely aware of how much people hated his domination, especially during 2013 which is when he decided to just go yolo with the Pole-to-win streak and disregard everything else.

>>66362785
>>66362820

It's what happens when you get raised in a richkid paradise never wanting for anything. Nico is actually a very smart guy and whatnot but its just the way that he speaks and emotes is so fake or whiny. Mostly because he's spent his childhood and teenage years around exclusively fake or whiny people with a lot of money and probably has no idea why fans can't really relate to him.

Hamilton's tantrums according to the media however are just part of his "winning" character, reasonable frustrations - he hates to come second and it shows - that's why he's a THREE TIME FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPION©, Martin! He's just hungry ;) because he grew up middle class in a first world country ;))

Their proposed solution to make shit more exciting is more down force which is retarded. When we had more down force we had less overtaking. It just means clean air becomes more important so being behind people slows you down more relative to the very car you are trying to overtake. So much of the stuff done to help overtaking recently has been very artificial as it has been DRS which is done to help the problem with dirty air and try to eliminate the disadvantage of being behind or the advantage of being in front. I would say the tyres create more artificial overtaking as it is done just to create speed differences between cars as the tyres degrade or someone comes along with fresher tyres there is nothing a driver can really do about it, also being behind someone degrades your tyres more which makes being behind even worse. At least with DRS you could in theory with all else being equal retake your position as you get the DRS next lap.

I agree with people calling for more mechanical grip and maybe even lower aero. If drivers can push to the max the whole race and the cars deliver that power consistently for the whole race then you can have front runners trading places as they use each others slipstream to come back at each other. That only works if the slipstream creates an advantage for the car behind relative to the car infront. The whole track becomes a DRS zone without the DRS.
>>
>>66363495
so bangin', even her father wants to bang 'er.
>>
>>66364872
The only problem with this is that for ~40 years now, aero is the main thing that sets F1 apart from other series. How fast the cars are around corners and consequently a lap is what makes them special. It's a big part of the spectacle, seeing drivers fly through the Suzuka snake or Pouhon. I'm all for make the racing a little closer but just getting rid of aero isn't the answer, lots of other series have better racing but they still aren't as good because it's simply more exciting to watch an F1 car than a GT car.

I hate most of the band-aid solutions FIA and F1 Group have come up with to help the situation (I think DRS is okay as long as it's not OP), but so many people (Brundle, HAM, Crofty) act like it's as simple as artificially handicapping the formula to make it just like every other series out there.

>tl;dr - getting rid of F1 aero doesn't fix everything

I saw Fernando Alonso at the paddock in Suzuka today. I told him how honored I was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a baka and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Where is my horsepower?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “ERS? ERS? ERS?" and slapping my head. I walked away and continued with my engine work, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to leave for the motor home I saw him trying to walk out of parc ferme with like 105 grid penalties in his hands without applying them.

Charlie Whiting was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Fernando, you need to apply those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear him, but eventually turned back around and brought them to Charlie.

When Charlie took one of the penalties and started applying it multiple times, he stopped him and told him to apply them each individually “to prevent any mgu-h infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After Charlie scanned each penalty and started to say the grid position, Alonso kept interrupting him by yawning really loudly.

NO CHANGES TO QUALIFYING. WHAT THE FUCK, REEEEEE.

>The elimination qualifying system is set to remain in place for the Bahrain GP after all following a bizarre twist of events in the last few days

>After the teams agreed to dump it completely and return to the 2015 format – seemingly with the support of Bernie Ecclestone – it appears that Jean Todt led a move to introduce a hybrid system, with elimination in Q1 and Q2, and Q3 as per 2015 with all cars running together

>This had been mooted several weeks ago after race engineers and team managers suggested that there would not be much activity in Q3

Not saying get rid of aero but the aero dominated era was the most processional. Just at least address the imbalance between aero and mechanical grip.

how is f1 not the pinnacle of motorsport? you must be meming. when asked what they are working towards, every young driver in lower categories says f1. F1 has better drivers than other series, f1 has better & more renowned engineers than other series, f1 has more fans than other series, f1 has faster cars than other series, f1 is more expensive than other series, and plenty of other things.

other series might be purer racing, but that doesn't change the fact that f1 has (and has had, for a very long time) the highest level of competition of any car racing series

i even prefer watching wec, but i'm not neckbeardy enough to unironically argue that f1 isn't the pinnacle of motorsport

Understatement of the millenium. It's almost hilarious when you look at how legitimately poor the quality of drivers in WEC is, not to mention how insanely easy to drive the cars are.

A lot of the other arguments are solely because F1 has been built up to be like that, and there's still nothing stopping the FIA from suddenly promoting something else as the pinnacle of motorsport, but things like that won't change for a very long time to come.

The difference though is that driver aids lessens the perceived skill level that a driver must have. A lot of people think they make driving an F1 car a lot easier - arguably they do, but I'm not getting into that. Not many people think that driving a car that is aero dependant is easier than one that is not, even if it actually is.

What I'm saying is that we shouldn't make the cars drastically slower just in order to spice up the racing.

I think it's sad that people actually do look at it as 'handicapping" when you suggest they shitcan all the computer assisted bullshit F1 drivers use.

If it was me, I'd do the following:

-impose aero restrictions that limit the amount of down force and therefore increase the reliance on normal tire traction, and driver control

-shitcan the gojillion dollar magic steering wheel, including all the electronic assist bullshit associated with it, in order to help keep costs down and emphasize driver control

-mandate standard stick shifts and not those faggy steering wheel paddle shifters

Racing is about man vs. machine, and F1, with all its computer assisted bullshit, is getting to the point where the driver is becoming redundant, and they might as well just remote pilot the damn things.
>>
>>66365794
>Not many people think that driving a car that is aero dependant is easier than one that is not, even if it actually is.
If people perceive something and it is wrong then going down the line of trying to fix F1 on that faulty basis isn't going to fix F1.

It isn't about making cars slower, you can trade aero for mechanical grip with an end result in the same level of grip.
>>
>>66366155
driver control matters just as much with high aero, aero cars are more difficult to drive perfectly than mechanical grip cars

the steering wheel is like <1% the cost of the car and the only assist associated with it is adjustable feedback levels

the gearshift thing i dunno, its just a distraction from the actual skill of driving, but i could see how its a valid argument, its something a lot of former f1 drivers complain about now

>>66366200
no theres a maximum amount of load you can get without aerodynamics which is related to the mass of the car, but increasing the mass of the car will make it slower because of intertia. theres no way to get the same levels of grip f1 cars have without huge amounts of downforce
>>
>>66366200
I'm saying aero is a major issue with fans the same way that driver aids were. Personally I don't think it's "easier" to driver a car dependent on aero as opposed to traditional grip, it just requires a different style.

There's no possible way to achieve anything close to F1 corner speeds without aero. Alternate sources of downforce like ground effects is a better route to go down than mechanical group.
>>
>>66366333
Dammit meant to say aero is NOT a major issue with fans the same way driver aids were. F1 was scared that people thought drivers no longer required the same amount of skill they used to and would therefore stop watching. This is not the case with aero.

Remember when everyone thought HAAS would be yellow? Good times

>>66366333
And yet I have never argued to get rid of aero. In fact I initially made the point to increase mechanical grip and not necessarily lower aero just that it could be.

The point was more to address the imbalanced so dirty air doesn't fuck grip up as much as it does because of the reliance of aero for grip.

Even one of the fastest periods had grooved and smaller tyres to reduce mechanical grip to slow the cars down so speeds could have been faster.

I also didn't really argue for the cares to be harder to drive in and of itself in what I was arguing about grip. All grip being equal or even more wouldn't really impact that. Some actually argue to have really shit tyres but consistently shit to make the cars slip more making the cars more difficult to drive. Sort of like wet racing all the time. However from what I was arguing if drivers can better compete with one another even if the cars are not strictly harder to drive on their own that makes racing more challenging in relation to drivers skills compteing. Less processional overtaking because of the differential of tyre wear, DRS or no overtaking because of dirty air and tyre wear. You could have the cars really hard to drive and still have all those issues continuing to lead to processional racing.

it's pretty funny that people let an italian rumor and a shitty journalist's retweet cloud their predictions, despite all indications from every other bit of Haas branding.
>>
>>66366651
im not that canadian, but lower grip wouldn't make the cars slip, it would still be optimal to drive them right on the limit just before they slipped, what makes them slip in the rain is inconsistent/unpredictable levels grip, so drivers are tricked into overestimating how much grip they'll have

but yeah, the easier the cars are to drive the more emphasis there will be on the actual ability to drive fast, instead of the ability to stay in control

these digits, my god
>>
>>66366651
I'm not trying to say you're suggesting that as your main point, I'm addressing your comments to my arguments.

The problem isn't aero grip vs mechanical grip, it's where the downforce for aero grip is coming from and how it is used. Which is why I'm saying the focus shouldn't be on getting more mechanical grip which doesn't help at high speeds where dirty air is a problem, it should be on finding a way to use the dirty air just as efficiently or making it so the air coming off cars isn't as dirty.
>>
>>66366699
I meant easier to slip as in they couldn't just keep their foot down on certain corners that they can now. I didn't mean they would be sliding around all the time.
>>
>>66356891
Looks like we dont have to.

If in the end it plays out exactly like it did in Australia I'll be hoping Todt gets murdered.
>>
>>66366258
>driver control matters just as much with high aero

Right, but when you have funding disparities between teams, you can have significant differences in the effectiveness of a cars aero package, further reducing the emphasis on driver skill to the point of making it a marginal factor, at best.

The tech should should offer an advantage, but it shouldn't be powerful enough to make the driver almost redundant. If Ham / Ros / Vet couldn't win, or at least podium, in Manor cars, then the disparity is too great.

>>66366812
I am not arguing it as aero vs mechanical. I want both. It is bad to focus on either one over the other. You need more of a balance.

In fact 2009 was meant to address that when there was a big change. Removing the grooves and lowering aero to increase mechanical grip and lower aero and balance it more but they quickly also made the tyres shit to make things more "interesting" leading aero to quickly dominate again.

I'd say the regs certainly contribute to the issue, as they should be designed to facilitate better racing, and they don't seem to be doing that, given the issue that exists with being able to pass.

It's actually fucking hilarious that VDG actually showed up to Melbourne ready to go, starting seat fitting etc despite almost 100% knowing he wouldn't race. Pretty based way of going about it once you know you got fucked over. Maybe they thought he would just accept a payout but he goes by the literal definition of the contract and shows up like lets go guys! despite being a total outsider for the team for a while and all the setup and shit done for the other drivers

If I recall correctly he even got his seat fitted and stuff. Apparently it takes a solid 30 mins to get that done so he literally just sat there in the Sauber garage for half an hour fucking people's shit up even though he knew there would be almost no chance of him racing hahahaha. what a bro

if you're a team with a chance of being in Q3 then saving a set of tires matters too much, but even then you're automatically eliminated if your first hotlap is last place

think about it, there are seven minutes before the first elimination, say its a minute thirty lap somewhere;

1:40 in to the session - out lap finished
3:10 - banker lap finished
4:50 - in lap finished
5:10 - pit stop finished
6:40 - 2nd out lap finished
that only leaves you 20 seconds to do your hotlap, so its not happening

assuming you can do out and in laps at full qualifying speed you'll still need laptime*5 + 20s for the pit stop to get 2 hotlaps in within 7 minutes;
7*60 < laptime*5 + 20
42 < laptime*.5 + 2
40 < laptime*.5
80 < laptime

so it would only be at all possible at a track with a less than 80 second lap, and even then its really unlikely you'd be able to do that, even without traffic.

if you're confident that even on higher fuel load you won't be last and also that you have no chance making it into Q3, then it could MAYBE be worth it

if you're one of the teams whos borderline then yeah, someone like manor, haas, sauber, renault, etc. In melbourne though for example i think vettel did two successive hotlaps didn't he? Formula One is on life support. It will be dead the second Monza is off the schedule.

in just one more country, hardly significant
>>
>>66376517
That doesn't change the fact that it's still total shit, especially considering it's the country that is home to the reigning champion.
>>
>>66376550
f1 is awesome though

Not anymore, now it's just a shell of its former amazing self.

what?

f1 is still pretty fucking cool my man, maybe not as awesome as it used to be, but when it really comes down to it, f1 is still pretty dang rad
>>
>>66376699
Yep, all mods for Sim racing games relating to F1 are banned so they can push the Codemasters Games.

>It seems with these new power units the best way to gain performance is through engine software/mapping and the different engine modes. It’s like electronic warfare, with the right software you can gain performance immediately without having to manufacture and build a new part. The current rules around designing an F1 car are so restrictive that it’s the one area in the rulebook where you have some freedom.

not necessarily. all the software in the world won't help if you can't recover enough energy and deploy it.
>>
>>66376737
they're only gone from racedepartment as far as i can tell

source: currently downloading f1 1981, 1988, 2001, 2009, and 2013 for rfactor just in case

Not everyone has access to your time machine though, Mr. 1980's time traveler dude...
>>
>>66376837
Nah I agree with him, F1 is still a good time. It's just frustrating because it could be better. And it costs too much to watch but whatever I just steal it anyways.

enough money to make a new engine for the db11, strangely enough.

F1 is steaming shit. The FIA and Bernie have managed to turn the entire series into a complete joke. Dropping the great tracks and going to 3rd world bore-fests like Baku, Malaysia, and Abu Dhabi. Fucking China. No one in China, Singapore, or Bahrain gives a flying fuck about F1. They give the tickets away to have people in the fucking stands. The current engine formula is shit. Way too expensive and sound like fucking weed eaters. The current aero is shit. The current tires are uber-shit, and DRS is a shit gimmick to make up for shit aero in a shit series where passing is almost impossible without gimmick DRS.

Fuck F1 all the way to hell.

unfortunately the right change is to remove the timed elimination.

also the current aero is also not shit and also the only shit thing about the engines is the sound, which is only really bad on tv - having some of the most powerful engines of all time is cool as fuck imo

the racing in f1 is only bad if your idea of racing is something out of mario kart, go watch 5 random races from before 2009 and 5 random races from after 2009 and tell me which had better racing

also were you going to actually go to magny-cours anyway?? if not then why do you care about whether koreans or singaporeans like f1? where are you getting these memes, reddit?

ps singapore is one of the highest-attended races

Sorry, the current aero is shit. The huge front wings are the reason DRS was implement to make passing an occasional feature of current F1. The cars are too sensitive to the disrupted air coming from the car in front. They lose their front end grip too easily. The current aero regs are directly responsible for DRS. And DRS is a gimmick. F1 should not have resort to gimmicks to make a race watchable. Just like intentionally shitty tires should not be a part of the most advanced racing series on the planet. No one will ever claim that Pirelli are a World Championship winning tire manufacturer. Mercedes will be World Champions in spite of Pirelli tires.

That is not F1. That is gimmick1.
>>
>>66378297
The only problem is you can only get what you want if all the teams had an infinite amount of money.
>>
>>66378297
not to mention the shitty v6s. they're so pathetic. f1 should be contain some of the best automotive engineering in the world but instead we're stuck with lawnmowers. can you imagine turbo v12s with modern engineering?
>>
>>66378356
You ignore that F1 cars are currently 45% thermal efficient. Toyota's road car engine gets 20%. With modern fuel regs these cars would beat your holy v12s in a GP.
>>
>>66378297
i'd rather see cars go fast than meme racing, watch GT racing or karting if you're looking for wheel-to-wheel madness. its the ">muh excitement" mentality thats making gimmick f1, not the aero

>>66378356
the current f1 engines are some of the most advanced engines in the world, are you judging them purely off sound? you do realize that in just their third year of development they're already just about on par with the v10s and 80s turbo at the end of their development cycles in terms of horsepower, and beyond them in terms of maximum torque right?

WEC spends less with more flexibility and better racing. F1 is already almost limitless spending if you account for the money Merc, Ferrari, Renault, and Honda have poured into engine development. The fake "cap" the FIA installed is smokescreen to keep the independents poor and uncompetitive at the sharp end of the grid. Face it....F1 is in big trouble with falling ratings, engine costs out of control, and gimmicks to try and make the racing appealing to a shrinking audience of ever more casual fans.

I believe they are still there. Back in 2001 I saw a frame by frame photo set (in a F1 magazine I used to buy back then) and you could see his legs were folded like rag doll legs.
