will the next test series involving Australia be better than this one?
>>
>It’s January 2022
>despite Tom Latham and Kane Williamson being ranked 2nd and 3rd in the world, NZ are still an average team, ranked sixth
>hot off the heels of a surprise 3-0 slamming of a 5th-ranked Pakistan (their first 3-0 victory in six years) at home, NZ face a 4th ranked South Africa, a demonstrably better side
>NZ’s pace attack is still led by Tim Southee and Trent Boult, who are still hot and cold

Other players of note

>Tom Bruce
Tom Bruce ideally should be the greatest batsman of all time. 30 years old, and 31 first class centuries behind him, he averages 59 in first class, but after a shocking start to a test career (that eventually improved) only has an average of 38, with two hundreds. He is a naturally fast scorer, at times dominating one day sides and has some huge scores in T20s. He has recently grown in confidence in the test arena due to a couple of top-quality 50’s in pressing circumstances, but he is also known for choking

>Dean Robinson
Robinson was originally brought in as a stop-gap, but at age 31 on debut he scored one of the most autistically impressive hundreds, a 140 off 350 deliveries, in trying circumstances. Retained ever since because of that, and some solid 50s to follow, but future is uncertain.

Part of the reason for NZ’s lack of success despite having two of the three best batsman in the world is the lack of consistency in the rest of their lineup. Aside from the opening bowlers and Bruce, no others had consistently gained a spot.

The opening spot alongside Latham had been tossed around multiple people in between Martin Guptill bursts, who got recalled for the fifth time at age 35 in Bangladesh in the previous season, and has averaged 45 since. But due to his age, it is known that he will need to be replaced as soon as possible, but none of the other players who have held the position since 2014 have averaged more than 30.
>>
>>64602356

After vast success in the Pakistan series with four frontline seamers, a problem with NZ’s allrounder also occurred, as all the major options were also seamers - Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Corey Anderson and Scott Kuggeleijn have all held places to varying successes, but only Santner provided spin balance, and he has been sorely out of form. Ish Sodhi was selected as the all-rounder for the final Pakistan test, due to a Shield batting average of 40 this season, but is unproven as an allrounder, as he failed with the bat but succeeded with the ball

First Test

NZ XI:
>Tom Latham
>Martin Guptill
>Kane Williamson (c)
>Dean Robinson
>Tom Bruce
>Michael Bracewell (w)
>Ish Sodhi
>Adam Milne
>Tim Southee
>Trent Boult
>Bevan Small

The series opened with a reasonable South Africa batting performance, and a reasonable NZ bowling performance. Ish Sodhi, despite impressing in his Pakistan recall, was smashed, as was Bevan Small, but three wickets a piece for Boult and Southee brought South Africa down for 365, with opener Theunis de Bruyn top scoring with 143.

Any hopes of NZ keeping up were quickly dashed as Kagiso Rabada ripped through the top order, including the key wickets of Latham and Williamson, and after a subsequent middle order collapse, NZ were 140/7, with only Tom Bruce showing some fight with 44. Bruce departed to bring Trent Boult in at 10, and him and Tim Southee put on an impressive ninth wicket stand to pull the score out to 208 all out, and avoid the follow on, Southee scoring 34 and Boult 24*

South Africa’s second innings was a serious anomaly. Brought into the side for sheer pace but only when fully fit, Adam Milne had been only used for short-pitched targeting when partnerships had build, but after coming on as second change, he broke a solid opening partnership, and followed with two more wickets in just two overs. By the time he was brought back for his second spell, Boult and Southee had picked up one each, but Milne absolutely slaughtered the South African tail, picking up five in his second spell to finish with astonishing figures of 8/76 off 20 overs, despite being the fourth bowler used. The spell had mean South Africa were unable to set a target of their choice, but the resultant 461 still looked miles out of their range.

NZ’s response, however, was anything but in the spirit of Milne’s valiant fight. Two more failures from Latham and Williamson, and yet another fighting innings from Tom Bruce, who was evidently hitting some form, who top scored again with 37. NZ gave in feebly and were bowled out before the close of day four for 147, South Africa claiming victory by 313.

Second Test: The Comeback

Due to the heavy summer workload, and lack of gaps between matches, NZ were potentially facing a fatigue crisis ahead of the second test.

Adam Milne, despite being far and above the best NZ bowler in the first test, was rested due to chronic injury problems and the thought that him at less than 100% would not be worth it. To replace like-for-like, NZ called up Phil Ellis, a 22-year-old with only seven first class matches to his name, for the sole reason that he could bowl 145kph.

Ish Sodhi, brought in for batting in the first test, was also dropped again, due to not delivering with either bat or ball, and Jimmy Neesham was brought in as replacement with hopes of strengthening the obviously failing batting, having not played a test for over a year.

Dean Robinson was also rested following his nine-test run in the side, due to his age and the fact that his average had been steadily declining. Henry Nicholls, who had a solid debut the previous season, was brought in at 5

Bevan Small was also dropped, more out of lack of form, being replaced by a debutant, Alan Hyde.

Martin Guptill retained his place, though many fared he would be next.

NZ won the toss, batted first, and got off to a wonderful start, with both Latham and Guptill hitting fifties, before Daryn Dupavillon came back from his second spell. From 109/0, Dupavillon pulled NZ to 165/6, with all six wickets falling to him, including the recalled Henry Nicholls for a golden duck. By tea NZ were in serious trouble thanks to their middle order, and even the in-touch Tom Bruce had fallen.

Michael Bracewell, in his sixth test and without a fifty to his name, teamed up with Tim Southee, promoted to 8 due to lack of batting in the tail, to try and rebuild. And that they did. They put on a monumental 180-run partnership for the seventh wicket that saw both batsmen reach their highest scores - Bracewell a maiden century with 111, and Southee falling just short of his with 86. Dupavillon, despite picking up seven in the end, was in the thick of this comeback, his once stellar figures ending as 7/120. NZ reached a decent 373, a total they could only have dreamt of at tea on day 1.

South Africa’s response was clinical, however, and they showed their class as they too put on a hundred run opening stand, as well as another hundred stand for the fourth wicket, as their top order did what NZ’s failed completely to do in the first test. De Bruyn, Hudson and Rundle all reached fifties, but it was Quinton de Kock, batting at 3, that anchored the innings with a massive 226, pulling up his 200 with the #11 at the other end - although NZ managed to crumble numbers 6-11 for only 34 runs between them, in that time De Kock had carried his bat and scored 91 runs of his own at the other end. South Africa finished on 499, gaining a healthy first innings lead of 126.
>>
>>64602596
NZ’s second innings did not seem awfully impressive, but considering the events of the final innings, it now seems vital. Latham top scored with 89, by far his highest score of the series, while Tom Bruce again scored a decent knock without a triple figure reward of 71, but it was two new faces, Henry Nicholls and Phil Ellis, that turned the game. At seven down, SA were rolling through the NZ tail to look at a target of around 150, but coming in at 9 Phil Ellis entered, and with Nicholls blasted a quickfire partnership of 65, including Ellis scoring 34 off 27 deliveries. It shoved the lead out to 200, a total that South Africa still would have backed themselves to chase.

That was not to be. By stumps on day four Trent Boult had obliterated the top order, and South Africa were 45/4, facing a huge ask of 150+ on a day five pitch with their tail. Boult and Southee came back in on day five and finished the job within an hour, NZ ultimately only using three bowlers as South Africa caved to 88 all out, Boult taking 6/41. After being behind for nearly all of the test, NZ had got their noses in front thanks to some belligerent batting, and their bowlers needed just a sniff of that to pounce and level a series that they had been being in for eight out of ten days.

New Zealand 373

Apologies for the sudden change of writing style, I wrote this one up before deciding greentext was lame

Third Test: The Decider

Some debatable changes were made after the second test, with the selectors deciding not to reverse the resting after the new team ended up as a winning team, so Adam Milne, despite taking eight in the first test, was sidelined again. The only changes were Ish Sodhi returning, after Jimmy Neesham had failed with the bat. Although he took two vital wickets in South Africa’s first innings, he was viewed as needed more for batting, and Sodhi was recalled again to aid in team balance.

The bell had also tolled for Martin Guptill, who was rested even after doing reasonably in the second test, being replaced by debutant Simon Nesdale, who had been the 12th man for the first two tests. Due to Guptill's age, however, it is likely that it could be his last test.

NZ XI:
>Tom Latham
>Simon Nesdale (debut)
>Kane Williamson (c)
>Tom Bruce
>Henry Nicholls
>Michael Bracewell (w)
>Ish Sodhi
>Phil Ellis
>Tim Southee
>Trent Boult
>Alan Hyde

Day 1
>NZ win the toss and elect to bat, on a reasonable bowling pitch with both turn and bounce on day one, on the assumption that it will only get worse over time
>After a steady opening partnership of 51, off spinner Dane Piedt causes an abrupt collapse, with both openers and Williamson falling within the space of two overs just before lunch. Bruce enters during the middle of this collapse, and in true style smashes his first two balls from Piedt to the boundary.
>a small partnership between Bruce and Nicholls begins, but Piedt continues excellent bowling and eventually takes Nicholls too, for 15. Bruce contributed 70% of the runs in the partnership at a strong strike rate
>Michael Bracewell comes in, and although his heroics from the first innings of the second test are remembered, few expected him to do it again

>Bruce and Bracewell share a vital 148-run stand, with Bruce smashing 83 of these before being stumped, finishing with 123 off 147 balls. His 32nd First Class century, but only his 3rd Test century, and the pace at which he got it was completely at odds with the pitch and the match situation
>Ish Sodhi comes in at 263/5 halfway through the evening session, a reasonably solid base, but NZ are aware that with Sodhi at 7 their tail runs long. Despite his healthy first class average for the season, Sodhi did not prove himself as a batsman in either of his two previous recall tests
>But, in perfect timing, Sodhi digs in and lasts out the evening with a fully in-touch Bracewell, who finishes on 91*
>Play ends on 320/5, a far cry from the 68/3 of earlier, or what NZ expected having batted on a bowling wicket. South Africa, except Piedt, failed to capitalise on the pitch, being demoralised by a dominant Bruce hundred, knocking all SA bowlers to over 3.5 runs per over

Day 2
>Bracewell quickly passes his hundred - his second in seven tests, and returns the number in the 50s column back to zero as his second converted fifty. However he nicked behind to Kagiso Rabada shortly after on 104, leaving the tail fully exposed.
>Rabada also accounted for Phil Ellis in the same manner shortly after, but Tim Southee, batting at 9, was harder to budge. Southee managed to belt his way to 36 before becoming Piedt’s fifth, and in that time Sodhi had raked up a valuable half-century, their partnership reaching 54
>>
>>64602846
>But it wasn’t over, as Trent Boult came in at 10 and proceeded to also aid Sodhi, them also gaining a 50 partnership as Sodhi waltzed to a career-best 75 before being caught lbw by Rabada. By this time NZ were 458/9 and already millions of miles ahead, but the demoralised SA bowlers still found it hard to knock the tail, with Boult and Alan Hyde putting on a third consecutive 50 partnership to bring the total to 512, before Boult was caught on the boundary for a career-high 66

To explain what happened next, I feel the best way to experience it is to list Tim Southee’s innings figures
>17.1 overs
>4 maidens
>36 runs
>9 (nine) wickets

>After taking the first three wickets in his opening spell, two in consecutive balls, Southee came back after tea to bowl at a solid partnership between Stiaan van Syl and David Rundle, which had built in his absence. After dismissing both of them, plus Tonton Jordaan, South Africa reached stumps completely shaken on 121/6, with Southee taking all six.

Day 3
>unfortunately, due to a break required in the middle of two ferocious spells, Alan Hyde took the 9th wicket of Dean Elgar, meaning Southee could not go for all ten, but on the second over of his fourth spell he had Rabada caught at slip, ending with nine of the ten South African wickets, and their innings on 161 all out, the lead a mammoth 351. For contrast, Trent Boult’s figures were 16-1-63-0.

A lead of that size almost always calls for a follow-on, but with the on-song Southee requiring a rest, and nearly three whole days to play, Kane Williamson decided to send his men in to bat again, to absolutely rub it into the demoralised South Africans, who were now facing only one result.

>>64602869
>Nesdale, on debut, had impressed under tough conditions briefly in the first innings, but his 71 in the second rubbed big piles of salt into the South African wounds, as he used the lack of pressure to gain his first test 50
>Tom Bruce, again, finished the job off, smashing 64* from 77 deliveries in quick time to declare with 45 minutes before stumps, declaring at 189/3 and setting a “target” of 541.
>Daryn Dupavillon, the star bowler of earlier in the series, was carted for five an over.

South Africa entered the fourth innings facing certain defeat, and it wasn’t long before they were nearing it, with Trent Boult, wicketless in the first innings, taking the first three, before Tim Southee Grabbed his 10fer.

Their second innings collapsed to just 133 in the first morning of Day 4, conceding a loss by 407 runs. Boult picked up six wickets in total, with Southee taking three to end with match figures of 12/74

>Aftermath

The series began with New Zealand facing a better side, having spent the best part of three years being completely reliant on their two best players. In this series, both those players failed. Latham scored only two fifties in his six innings, and Williamson failed to pass 30. But in their absence, nearly every member of the team stepped up. NZ’s batting was carried by a spirited Michael Bracewell and a reborn Tom Bruce, as well as vital contributions by nearly every tailender in the squad, who also bowled very well.

After being comprehensively beaten in the opener, NZ took a flukey comeback victory in the second test and won the decider in the most ruthlessly uncompromising manner, a far cry from the team that crumbled to 147 all out in the first test.

Man of the series?

Tom Bruce, for top scoring in nearly every innings amongst crumbles, and then finally unleashing in the final massacre?

Michael Bracewell, for two absolutely vital hundreds after top order crumbles?

Tim Southee, for both his best figures and his highest score?

What about Boult, who also took two five-fors and a ten-for? And then you can’t ignore the individual brilliance of Milne’s 8/76 or Sodhi’s 75 or Ellis’ 34 on debut, or even Quinton de Kock’s double hundred or Dane Dupavillon’s 12/180.

Most runs
Tom Bruce 354 @ 70.8
Quinton de Kock 301 @ 50.17
Theunis de Bruyn 276 @ 46
Michael Bracewell 231 @ 46.2
Tom Latham 210 @ 35
David Rundle 201 @ 33.5

Most wickets
Tim Southee 23 @ 15.74
Trent Boult 18 @ 20.39
Dane Piedt 17 @ 34.12
Daryn Dupavillon 15 @ 35.4

as >>64603515 said, they had this same problem last year but Maddinson and the bowlers were bailing them out. Their bowling is now substantially weaker without Lee (Jackson Bird is a fucking shit replacement) and Maddinson hasn't done anything. Their overseas players are crap aswell. I rekon they got Botha just because they know he will be a "domestic" player next year but why they keep bringing Lumb back is beyond me. They need to sort out their internationals. Just off the top of my head I can think of half a dozen internationals they could have got who would have been better.

>>

>>
>>64603814

it isn't really fair because the teams can only have 18 players and that includes the internationals. So the Sixers are carrying Starc, Smith & Lyon on their roster and have to include them in the salary cap (even though CA actually pays their salary).

Even as recently as last year Starc was playing most of the season for the Sixers because he wasn't in the Test team, but they really should clear those guys off the roster now.

The Sixers have no bench strength because of those guys whereas teams like Hobart which have no internationals have good players like Rainbird and Mennie on the bench.

imagine being quite literally the only person in your country who cares this much about cricket
>>
>Of all his contemporaries, Williamson appears to possess the most complete game, a combination of technique and temperament to succeed in all conditions, all situations, and all forms. The shorter formats of the game have added more energy and dynamism to batting, which has become pacier and more attractive, but there has been a palpable erosion of defensive technique, which makes the contemporary batsman vulnerable in conditions suited to bowlers, particularly against the moving or turning ball.

>Kohli has showed that pace doesn't scare him, but he nicks off far too often for a batsman of his stature; Smith scored two hundreds in England but failed every time the ball nipped about; and Warner is yet to master the turning ball. But Williamson is yet to reveal an obvious weakness in his batting. His defence is secure, most of his scoring strokes are orthodox, and yet he has been able to adapt his game to every form without a noticeable change in playing style. When wickets fell in a rush in New Zealand's home World Cup match against Australia, he hit the calmest of sixes to settle the nerves; and in the final Test of the season, on a pitch affording generous bounce and movement, he kept New Zealand's unbeaten home streak intact with an unbeaten 108. The next highest score was 35. He ended the year with a Test average of above 90, and he was the second most prolific scorer in the world in ODIs.

>But more than anything else, in a world where young batsmen are confused about how to develop their game, Williamson is the perfect model. McCullum was a tempting thought, but in the end Williamson is easily my man of the year.

Brief update from my alternate universe

It's like 2025 now, and we're total fucking shit lads. Ranked 8th. Nesdale, who debuted here >>64602736 has 26 matches and an average of 50, and our batting reserves are great, but fuck our bowlers are shite. Southee and Boult have both retired, I consistently rested them in their last years and tried bringing in some fresh blood but even age 35 they outperformed them

Kane got a broken finger for a series and I had to make Nesdale captain (young, high average, good pic), and in his first series, against Bangladesh, he fails every time with the bat and we lose 2-0. (Although Ban are actually now a mid-ranked team in this timeline)

These are dark times in the future of NZ cricket lads
