I wouldn't really call this England team sub-par. Their recent shittiness was due to their constant middle order collapse.
Bringing in Compton instead of Bellend stabilised the top order, and Taylor stabilises the middle order. Bairstow is always getting a lot more comfortable batting internationally. Stokes and Ali still can't score runs but I don't think anyone even cares anyway.
Ali is bowling a lot better than he used to, and both Finn and Broad were fairly dangerous. Woakes didn't even bowl bad at all either, but Anderson is likely replacing him as he's back in for the 2nd test.

The fact that there is no opener and Stokes only fires once every 10 tests undermine it. But you're right, they have all stepped up, especially Finn.
