Literally with link related, 3 ownership groups (aka a couple of dudes per) decided to start their own soccer teams in Michigan. AFC Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids FC went for crowdfunding and Oakland United FC might have too but they were always less on top of things. They all banded together and formed the GLPL, inviting 2 historic teams (Croatian Eagles SC and RWB Adria) from nearby states. That first season in 2015 just had 5 teams play double round-robin, but it was sanctioned by USASA and so they participated in U.S. Open Cup qualifiers and also played friendlies against other Midwest amateur teams (and AFC Ann Arbor's first ever game was a friendly against fucking San Marino).
Now the 2 ownership groups who were on top of things (AFCAA and GRFC) joined the NPSL and the GLPL rebranded with a more national focus. It's completely grassroots and literally within your power if you have some friends willing to fundraise ~$10,000 and can find nearby groups like yours.
But yeah, I have no idea what CSA's like compared to USASA. It's a little weird that there's not a combined amateur governing body like how the pro leagues have been combined.

The quality of play has outpaced the quality of refereeing. The fat refs can't keep up with the players physically and no refs can keep up mentally. They used to be sufficient when MLS was built on physical, CONCACAF-style teams. The more money that comes in, the better South American and African players are coming in.
