I feel as though it is my rite to be somewhat of a guiding force of this community and its meme posts and general discussion, I created the TRIPFAG, I am the anonymous, at any time you don't know who you are responding to, yet somewhere I lurk slowly but continually molding this little chunk of internet soccer through my in person knowledge of going to the waiver draft, super draft, and following every person involved at a high level on mls teams.

Milwaukee is a historic amateur soccer hotbed for those exact reasons. Sorry that you haven't seen any of their games on ESPN or FOX, but if you actually live there, you can easily get cheap tickets, have a few beers, and share some bantz and an authentic experience with your m8s.
The Premier League of America (formerly the Great Lakes Premier League) just added Milwaukee Bavarians. They're a formerly regional (duh) now national (duh) USASA-affiliated league unofficially right under the PDL and NPSL. There's no official tiering at the amateur level because it doesn't matter. GLPL teams beat NPSL teams and vice versa last season. In fact, the Madison 56ers just joined the PLA after many years of success in the allegedly higher NPSL.
Also, Croatian Eagles SC (from Milwaukee) were in the GLPL and are still in the PLA.

USASA is the official amateur governing body of the USSF. Teams and leagues have to fulfill certain conditions set out by USASA in order to become an affiliate, which grants them that prestige as well as an opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup.
The 2 major USASA leagues are the PDL, which is affiliated with USL, and the NPSL, which is its own thing (although NASL is trying to make it its affiliate). They're both national leagues that cost a few thousand dollars per year per team to be a part of.
Below them are the various national-ish and regional leagues that anyone can make if they have a few thousand dollars and basic marketing skills.
If you want to find out about your local team, I'd suggest checking out the PDL and NPSL's websites. If that fails, google your town with 'USASA' or 'soccer team'. Hopefully they at least have a facebook page and/or twitter account, if not a website of their own.

America is the same way, but because we have no promotion/relegation, and MLS likes to pretend they invented American soccer in 1996, most people are unaware of their local teams even if they follow MLS or foreign leagues.
There seems to be an exponential drop-off in awareness as you go down the levels, though, with most of the state-level USASA leagues focusing entirely on player development and thus players outnumbering fans at games. It's comfy but mostly irrelevant until the soccer landscape consolidates a bit.

Part of it is lack of marketing, but its mostly people who dont want to watch soccer with lower quality of play. If the average American EPL fan who doesn't care about MLS because the low quality, what makes you think theyll care about a 5th division amateur side? Omar hasn't had a solid season in a couple of years. He'll start the season well, have a few games down the stretch, but his defensive lapses cost LA points. It'd be one thing if he had a just a big salary, but as it is now, he's a waste of TAM.
