Hello, /hoc/. Im new to hockey and have yet to find a team that I want to root for. What are some ways to determine which team will be my favorite?
Some information about me:
I live in Nebraska.
Defense is the most exciting position for me. I generally believe that an aggressive and fast defense is better than a good offense. Goalie is also very important defense-wise.
I would prefer an underdog team, nothing hopelessly shitty, but nothing OP and super popular.
I like dark colors, so black team colors are nice, but not essential. As a side note I really don't mind the Sharks colors. I dislike a red white and blue color scheme. It's too cheesy and 'Murican.
Exciting or sometimes unpredictable players are appreciated.
So. Who could my favorite team be?
Good defense, exciting players, nice uniform and logo, underdog but not shit.

They match your color preferences. They are good but always suck in the playoffs so you will not be glory hunting. They are geographically close to you. Their core is young so they aren't going to go to shit in the next few years. Tarasenko is one of the most exciting young players in the league. Nilsson spent a year in the KHL which is a goalie friendly league and started playing a technical Reverse VH style. The larger ice surface made him a much more paitent goaltender, he rarely never bites or flinches on shooters.
Not to mention the Oilers team defense actually improved but now there is a huge challenge facing Nilsson. Oscar Klefbom suffered a fractured finger tonight so now they'll have to try to win without their #1 defender for an extended time on an already thin blueline.

That said, the management group was completely inept. Practically every trade/signing made by MacTavish is in the minors or scratched right now. The only exception is Pouliot. Their coaches have also been poorly chosen. Lots of rookie coaches with not much experience at the NHL level. Things should start to turn around now. They've got multiple defencemen they drafted in the lineup and contributing for the first time since the 80s. They're currently on pace to improve their goal differential by over 60 goals from last year.
