New engines edition
So Bernie and Jean Todt want to introduce simpler engines, and it seems like the most likely thing the teams will agree to is removing the MGU-H (which recovers heat from the turbo and converts it to electric engine) since it's expensive and one of the main points of performance difference between current engines. Bernie's throwing a fit about all of it.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/35059767
Is this good? Should they just go back to V8s? Should they bring back V8s alongside the current V6s under an equivalency formula? Let's discuss.

>downgrading engines
Isn't F1 supposed to be like the forefront of automotive technology?
Going backwards even to allow a few more teams to race just seems wrong.
Let teams build engines in any configuration they want, provided it fits the chassis and meets minimum weight and fuel requirements.

F1 is supposed to have the cutting edge in motor technology. Why should F1 appeal to the lowest common denominator and remove something that is "hard to make" but integral to modern and future engine technology? Why not go back to two-stroke engines so the shit-tier manufacturers also get a chance at winning the championship?
>>64141823
The real issue is that, compared to him and pre-slump Raikkonen, every single Finn that's either made it or is on their way to making it has been mediocre, including Bottas. His obsession with the latter is starting to get frustrating, and I can see him being the same with others as well. As much as it's nice of him to do that, it might damage his reputation quite a bit in the long run.

Are the rumors that Finns don't like Bottas much after the events of this season true? I've been hearing that a lot in these threads over the last couple of months.*
>>64141848
Bottas just came out of nowhere for some, and the legend around Kimi is as strong as ever in Finland even though he's had some abysmal seasons.
I'm sure people will eventually accept Bottas as a True Finnish Hero™, but not as long as Kimi is around.
And personally I still have faith in Valtteri, and I seriously hope he can get his first win soon so people will shut up.
>>64141904
>Bottas came out of nowhere
Seriously! He won GP3, spent a year as Williams Test Driver and was groomed for the seat. It was one of the most expected arrivals.
If anything, Gimi was the one that came out of nowhere
Personally I like Bottas, I don't know what problems the Finns have.
>>64132377
>downgrading engines
It's not a downgrade. The MGU-H/K was something tacked on because the engine manufacturers wanted it, because their road cars have it. Renault wanted I4 engines and Ferrari wanted V12s It has nothing to do with racing. They can literally turn a dial (fuel flow limit) to get back any lost power. And the cars will be both lighter and more reliable.
>Isn't F1 supposed to be like the forefront of automotive technology?
No it's supposed to be the fastest motorsport class. Which it is.
>>64141934
What I mean is no one cared about Bottas when he was in GP3 or a Williams test driver, or when he drove the dog Williams. Then he suddenly starts getting podiums "out of nowhere" but people still don't know him that well.

See how big the difference between Merc and Renault is? That's with regulations that already dictate like 85% of the engine. Now imagine the gap if they they had 90% freedom instead of 15%. That's the main reason, not regulatory. Same reason all cars run on identical tyres.
>>64142463
kinda what i meant, the teams would throw a shitfit after the first test and everyone but the best team and maybe ferrari would quit.
>>64142103
That does not at all look legit. Why Euro's are used when the team is based in Britain and the US Dollar is a more common currency in international business is beyond me. Still, would be nice to see Manor get a nice cash injection for fielding a not-entirely-shitty driver.

also: dubs and team willy somehow finish second in the wcc next year.
>>64142732
I don't know why people think he's a talented driver. OK he had a fairly good year in 2015.

>>64141904
Maybe people are just reasonable enough to understand that these last two seasons don't take anything away from Kimi's past achievements. Few drivers perform at a constant level in F1, and when they do they're often below the maximum pace of other drivers (Alonso, even Schumacher in 1999).
As for Bottas, it could just be a personality thing. The guy irks me quite a bit, frankly.
And they say F1 is (used to be) loud

Bring earplugs next time retard, You can usually even get them for free at motorsport events. Also I miss hearing the cars well before/after they pass the camera. It's definitely not as big of a deal as some faggots try to make it, but some of the atmosphere is lost

>>64142363
Because modern racing punishes large innovation, mostly in F1. The reason for this being a problem in F1 and not as much in sportscars currently is because Sportscar racing officials write better rules. They write better rules though because of experience and previous catastrophic failure, something F1 has never quite had to persevere.

>See how big the difference between Merc and Renault is? That's with regulations that already dictate like 85% of the engine.
You can't use this as an argument because the comparison is wrong. The current disparity in F1 goes back to the mid 2000s with Mercedes playing the long game. They dumped millions in research and man ours to develop the hybrid technology they're currently using to dominate. The resources to develop the tech are outside the realm of what constructors typically invest in a season. Mercedes seized the opportunity to research emerging technology and used its position to shape regulations that suited the research they'd done.
Years ago Mercedes built the infrastructure and trained engineers for years to put them in the position they're currently in. That's why I think the comparison shouldn't be made against more open regs. It's possible for this to happen again but it is highly unlikely for such a large gamble to be available in the near future.
With open regs come balance of performance which has its own drawbacks and detractors but WEC seems to have gotten the equivalence of technology down to near perfection for P1.

If F1 is about who has the most money to buy the best kit, then don't worry about engines.
If F1 is about racing, then they need to come up with an engine standard that ANY team can afford. That goes for every other piece of kit as well.
As it stands now, F1 isn't about racing, it's about qualifying, and since more than 60% of the races are won by the driver sitting on the pole, there's really no reason to watch the race.
Without a deliberate decision to mandate some kind of equipment parity across the board, F1 will continue to blow ass.

>>64166078
Won't it be too cold for some of those late Euro races? Euro leg would have to be in the middle, but then Montreal in early October? You'd probably have to move the entire season up 4-6 weeks to do this leg business and/or do more week to week racing.
>>64166519
>It was fun to drive in games/sims
So was India. Wasn't a particularly great race to watch, though.
>>64166458
Yeah, I considered that but the prestige of Monaco is the reason I put it at the end. It would be a little disappointing racing-wise if it were to be the title-decider, but it isn't any worse than ending in Abu Dhabi. Maybe swap with Monza?
>>64166078
Wait. Argentina has an F1 track?
>>64166730
I'd actually put the European leg in the middle, much like it is now, simply because Brazil is GOAT for title deciders.
If it has to be Europe, maybe Silverstone, because of all the teams being located thereabouts, and the depth of Britain's association with F1.

verstappen and sainz seem to be good friends and they are both very good drivers
They don't need a three-leg championship to get more people interested in F1, they need to make it more accessible. The TV times are one thing, but it will always be at a bad time for half the world.
They need to offer streaming of live races for anyone and they need past race available to watch. Also it would help if Bernie didn't keep forcing tracks out of business with his insane fees (see COTA).

Could be one of the things that helped F1's ratings here in the states this year, is that NBC-SN showed every race both live and re-broadcasted later that day at a consistent time when the country is awake.

Not particularly. He likes to give about half a metre too little room when wheel-to-wheel and has a habit of taking the outside line and forcing the other driver to give up their line when Valttteri wasn't entitled to it in the first place (i.e. Brazil 2013, Mexico 2015)

It's called "formula" for a reason. There are a certain amount of restrictions and rules which define the 'Formula' and teams compete within those rules
>>64147370
I miss Juan Pablo so fucking much.
;_;
>>64185692
Wrong
>>64185692
'Formula' just means it is a Formula car
A Formula car having only 1 seat and open wheels.
GP2 and IndyCar (despite how much they try) are formula series in the same way F1, F2, F3 and F4 are
The opposite is sports cars.
A sports car has 2 seats and has closed wheels.
An LMP1 car is as much a sports car as a GT car because it has a second seat. It is just filled with electronics and you can't physically fit in it.
>>64188999
the term 'Formula car' came around because of the regulations, also known as the /Formula/, that made up the different series sanctioned by the FIA. The series itself doesn't have to be named Formula JeanTodt'sAgeingBallsack to be a Formula series so I'm not sure what you're getting at by mentioning IndyCar and GP2.
>>64189228
Yes I just like pointing out that definition so that people get up in arms when the FIA try to introduce closed wheels (and maybe more people will write to the FIA to get Mercedes wins with the W196 streamliner wins officially thrown out)
>Malaysian Grand Prix in October
Fuck
>>64190667
What does it mean?
>>64188999
You're confusing 'single-seater' and 'formula'. The term 'formula' does refer to the limiting regulations that define the rules. GP2 and IndyCar are formula series, because they have a set of rules and restrictions that define the cars of that series.
Not because they're open-top single seaters.
>>64190941
Yes but that is the outright definition of the generic term 'Formula Car' in the sameway the opposite is an actual definition of the generic term 'Sports Car'
A 'formula series' as you said is called is because of the rules and regulations. A 'Formula car' is just the generic name for all single seater, open wheelers.
Though I would not call GP2 a 'formula series' as it is a 'spec series'.
You can have a 'formula car' in a 'non-formula series' (a la GP2) but you can not have a 'sports car' in a 'formula series'.
Because a 'sports car series' is defined by the fact that the cars in it are 'Sports Cars' but a 'formula series' is defined by the fact that there is a series of rules and regulations that make up the "formula".

>>64182097
drugs & racing are great. Probably mostly because I enjoy racing in the first place, but drugs really make it a different and unique thing. Weed & beer helps F1 & Nascar races be so much more interesting. I love getting stoned and looking up/learning about all the engineering going into every team & car, while watching it on TV, where it's all playing out physically on the track
Formula E, GP2, & Aussie V8s (anything with lots of overtakes & rather chaotic/intense racing) are fucking perfect on psychedelics. Those combinations have been my favorite part of racing in 2015, I don't even know how to properly describe it..
IndyCar is also great with all of the above, but I'm still trying to recoup after watching Pocono on an 1/8th of shrooms. Gotta be sorta careful with the psychs I guess.

>>64212628
What is your plan for network setup? How are you going to stream?
>>64212937
I'm not 100% sure at the moment actually. Mainly due to some confusion on my part and the lack of hardware to test at the moment.
Initially I was thinking about a form of multicasting. I was trying to emulate the way Acestream (p2p) works so that each player that downloads the stream can then upload it to another client. I'm very sure this is possible, it's just takes time to configure.
The other option is some form of HTTP streaming, which may also be achieveable since I've got a quick enough upload (100/15), it's just the streaming side that I'm a bit confused about or unsure of. Maybe some form of live stream over ustream or something like that, or direct http streaming.
It's all dependent on the quality of the stream, as it will limit what races I can show, due to file size. I know we all want to see Canada 2011 once more, I'll try and make that the first stream, and I'll use Japan 2000 as a test or something.

So he gets a 1 million dollar electronic music making machine then some random musician probably gets paid to teach him to press some buttons on it.
Eventually he will create some random noises that he will call 'music' then considering how self absorbed he is he will think the best thing anyone has ever created.
Never mind all those artists that spend their life practicing and have actual talent in this area, this is going the next big thing because he is such a special and unique person.
Or at least that what all his fan-base will think when its released.
One year later though, nobody will even remember it existed.

>At that time the Honda power curve had a shape that meant that the optimum shift RPM varied from gear to gear so we conducted some simulations with a view to putting lights / audio indications in the car to help the driver with gear shifts if there was laptime to be reduced. The predictions were then compared to on car logged data for Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta. This analysis showed that Jacques Villeneuve consistently shifted gear at exactly the right point, even when the differences in acceleration were minuscule (5th to 6th or 6th to 7th) and would not gain any laptime from having any driver aids in this area. Whereas Ricardo Zonta was inconsistent in his gear shift points and would reduce his laptime with a gearshift aid.

What is you guys opinion on the "Performance Weights" used by DTM? Do you think that would work in F1?
>>64239265
it would make the races more exciting and equal, but that isn't the point of f1
I use to hate the 70s car designs, but I've grown to really like them.
>>64239333
>>64239265
Performance weights (what are terrible, terrible name, probably to make it sound less crappy) are bullshit. I've never liked it, in any series.
>>64239375
blancpain BoP is pretty good cause all the cars have different strengths, so when they make the laptimes all around equal the strengths become what really matters
if blancpain actually mattered tho i'd probably hate it, its fun but it isn't real racing
>>64235990
Cevert, Depallier, Pironi and Bianchi were all World Champions-in-the-making, but lots of freaky /x/-tier shit had followed them all throughout their careers.

Isn't what everybody who complaints about boring races want? But I get what you're trying to say.
>>64239333
Those back tires look awesome.
>>64239477
gonna engage my autism here for a sec
the people who want that should be watching indycar or something. that line of thinking is what gave us DRS and made the cars look shit just so they'd race closer
f1 is (ironically i guess) a slow-paced sport both during an event and in terms of evolving storylines, casuals in race threads or on social media generally want football-level constant action and dramatic narratives, but they are looking for that in the wrong place. storylines in f1 play out over 5 or 10 year periods, doing anything to make it faster always seems so contrived and it cheapens the sport overall
i think the draw of f1 to most of the non-casual fans is the romanticism of it. just think of all the big historical points - ferrari in the schumi years, senna/prost at mclaren, alonso in the early 2000s, and think about how big and romantic those things seem.
if a bunch of rules were brought in to make the racing and the championships more exciting, it would be impossible for things to have the same magnitude as those things for a bunch of reasons, but especially because it would be so much more artificial. we would be breaking with the 80+ year tradition in such a way that it would never feel like we were seeing history in the way it did back then, and new stuff that happened would be seen only as like a footnote, even if it were more exciting at the time.
my nephew once said that if someone complains about domination in f1 there's a 90% chance they're secretly watching for the crashes, and maybe its an exaggeration but i think it sums it up pretty well

I'll give you '83 because of rocket fuel, but the other two were earned, and '86 should also have been his title. He only lost because Williams gave him Number 1 status in his contract, and then didn't actually implement it, favoring the slower Brit instead.
Not to mention that he slowed beyond '87 because of his vision issues, and by his own admission he only stuck around for the money.
