It wasn't worthless throughout 2011 and 2012 with him on a shitbox Ducati, it wasn't in 2013 when Marquez came and had his battle with Lorenzo, and it wasn't worthless in 2014 when he wiped the floor with everyone else on weekly basis.
Attendance was still high, some races were still sold out, on-track action was still thrilling. It's only been since Qatar this year (maybe late 2014) when the rosstards came back.

I really wish that BMW's 09 car was much higher up the grid. It would have been nice to see them around. 06 was good for a debut year, and until 2009 they just kept getting better and better, and IIRC the 09 car wasn't bad toward the end of the year. If they had more resources or spent more time on the 08 car, it really could have been a title challenger.
Front wings were simpler back then compared to what we have now. Imagine the complexity of the cars we would have today if they never changed regulations in 2009.

There is no one else with the talent or credentials of either of these two that will have enough funding to take the seat:

-McLaren doesn't have money to waste on Vandoorne and would be complicated with Mercedes and Werhlein.

In the late '80s they were only ~2.8m even with tonnes more fuel than they have now, so accommodating the fuel tank isn't an excuse. I'm a computer engineer, I'll offer my opinion on what autonomous racing would be like.
Each car would use an array of sensors to maintain situational awareness of competing cars. Prediction algorithms will be used to analyze the input data and try to project the path of the car in front and will adjust the throttle, steering, breaks, etc. accordingly.
Every move will be stone cold and calculated. There would be no emotion, stress, tension, mistakes, anything that makes racing worth watching.
It would honestly be so bad to watch that the only way I could possibly see this gaining any traction would be in a time attack rally style format with one car trying to set the fastest possible time.

Not exactly. In video games the control of ai cars is centralized. It's programmed to provide the most realistic experience to the player.
In real life, competing cars will have their own control systems and they won't be communicating with each other.
Basically the turn one scenario described earlier would be each car would put so much precedence on self preservation that they would go through so slowly and it wouldn't be exciting at all.

People are mostly Kimi fans. But I wouldn't like to generalize since we're probably like every other country except with a GP and unexplainable and unconditional/blind love for Finnish drivers.

That's pretty good. Over here, even in the years when we had a race, the vast majority knew only Schumacher, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Force India. And this was the demographic considered as 'non-casual fan' .
As for the Finn thing, one of my tour guides told me the Hungarian population originated from people who came to the region from Finland. So maybe people bandwagon because of the cultural history?
