Raced in F1 during the 90's and early 2000's. His best years were between '97-'99, where he was up near the front of the pack with Williams and then Jordan.
>>63987249
Williams has one of the smallest budgets and gets some of the bests results when comparing it to the driver positions. How does that happens ?
>>63987289
More importantly, he was originally (ie prior to him entering F1) seen as being better than Michael Schumacher, but he was completely obliterated by Jacques Villeneuve in 1997, who himself was almost beaten by Schumacher in a far worse car. This pretty much destroyed his reputation instantly, and while he was an outside challenger for the '99 title, he faded into total obscurity after that season.
Corinna Betsch also dumped him for Schumacher if I recall correctly.
>>63987360
By changing the atmosphere within the team, as Symonds said. He also named Smedley and Massa as being two of the most instrumental figures in that regard.
Also reminder that 1960s sports car racing will never happen again.

>>63987387
>changing the atmosphere within the team
What does that mean ?
>>63987418
There was a perpetual lack of motivation in the team prior to 2014. "We're hardly getting any results and we're not going to do much better if we try harder, so why bother?" Something along those lines.
>>63987360
As efficient aero as possible. This means that their drag to downforce ratio is insanely low, but at the expense of total downforce. This approach also means that the downforce they do have is what's known as friendly, or useable. Teams like McLaren have struggled immensely in this regard in previous years (recently 2009-2014) because they focussed on adding as much total downforce as possible, regardless of drag, and this results in downforce that is unstable as it changes speed or in cornering.
The regulation changes from 2013 to 2014, which reduced the amount of downforce significantly, also favoured the low-drag approach, as the penalty for having that much less downforce was much less significant than it was in the previous era.
While I've been collecting all of your predictions, I haven't done many myself

It's a velocity tuned, resonant charged intake. Basically, at WOT and very close in the rpm range where peak power is made, standing waves in the intake form to add a small amount of added pressure to force air into the engine.
Most racing series ban variable intake geometry so the static intake is designed to give a small boost of torque way up in the power band.
>>63992062
Inline engine. Intake on one side, exhaust header on the other.
>>63992102
but isn't it like 10x more aerodynamically inefficient to not just have the intake behind the roll hoop and pipe it to the side of the engine?

Hey guys I just saw Rush and how accurate is it to real life?
Also, why is Lauda shilling for Mercedes nowadays?
>>63996971

>>63996971
>shilling for Mercedes
Fuck I'm sick of the overuse of that word. He's *employed* by them, as a non-executive director. They give him a job, in return, he takes money. Do you shill for your manager at the sausage factory, Hans?
>>63996971
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2k8nuv
Just watch this and compare.
Also he's working a job mate, it's not like when you're in a team you're there forever, Lauda joined McLaren later.
I still can't believe that Button got more points than Alonso, it's the 1st season that Alonso doesn't score more points than his teammate. And it turns out to be BUTTON, who allowed this to happen, how is this even a thing
>>63996987
If you had ever watched German broadcast of F1 you'd understand why I said shilling.
>>63996971
>how accurate is it to real life?
In terms of showing Lauda's crash and his subsequent struggles and comeback, very accurate.
However, Hunt and Lauda were decent mates, having shared a flat once in their junior formula years, so that animosity was (to a degree) manufactured.
>why is Lauda shilling for Mercedes nowadays?
I don't know why he was appointed, but his appointment was the first step by Merc leading to the undermining of Brawn, so maybe it was the beginnings of Zetsche restructuring the top management of the team.
>>63997003
I only watched a German broadcast of F1 once, when Vettel won the title in Abu Dhabi in 2010. I was in Dusseldorf; I was very, very drunk on altbier, I had a charming young local law student with big tits in my lap and I literally lost the boner she gave me by squirming on my dick when he crossed the line as champion.
>>63997019
Normie pls go
>>63996971
Lauda follows the money. He was from a rich family which got him his first f1 drive, retired the first time to run his own airline (in 79) and only returned in uh... 82 to make bank to sustain his business interests. If I recall correctly he went on the found another airline after he retired for good, and then went on to be a Ferrari consultant before becoming team boss at the shitfest that was jaguar f1, along with bobby rahal of all people, before lying low for a while and taking up his non exec role at merc. Long story short, the king rat is money first, sport second, despite his obvious talent at the wheel.
Rush was pretty accurate, brands hatch being used as a stand in for most circuits and the terrible Fuji CGI aside. Hunt btfoing that journo may be an apocryphal tale but at least it was based on a story that made the rounds at the time. Very decent film especially for an Indy title but not one for motorsport aspies IMO.
The crash reconstruction made no mention of Merzario being one of the guys at the scene, which resulted in him going on a rampage on a minor Italian tv show, phoning in to the studio to call ron howard a cunt for a good ten minutes straight.
>>63997000
Trulli beat him too before being fired. It's not over the course of a full season, but it was a total curbstomp (especially because of Alonso's constant mistakes) before Briatore decided to show his hand.
>>63986380
Realistically speaking anyone who says he's a meme, is probably talking out of his ass.
But it's more fun to call him a meme, so he's a meme.

>The crash reconstruction made no mention of Merzario being one of the guys at the scene, which resulted in him going on a rampage on a minor Italian tv show, phoning in to the studio to call ron howard a cunt for a good ten minutes straight.
>>63986380
He's good, that much is obvious. What isn't obvious is how good he is. Sainz has been making a lot of mistakes and his record prior to F1 is far from being the most illustrious. Red Bull are doing their usual job trying to model him and his PR appearance the way they want, but beyond that his attitude is hardly the best and it may slow his rate of improvement in future seasons.

It was also not Trulli's problem, merely Briatore's. Problem is, Briatore and Alonso go hand in hand in everything, from the replacement of Button to Crashgate.

tired of this verstappen meme already
even if he lives up to expectations(which i doubt he will), red bull will never let him leave. since toro rosso secured ferrari engines for next year i expect them to be much more competitive. red bull will probably stick with renault as an engine supplier and if things go well they will be competitive next year. kvyat will probably be replaced with verstappen in 2017, and then he'll win a few WDCs in typical vettel fashion.
>>64000410

If you ran a team, would you rather have a Renault or Honda engine for 2016?
>>64001764
Honda, easily. Sure, they have their management issues, but they're not anywhere near as much of a joke as Toyota, or as they themselves were a few years ago. Renault have been utterly incompetent since 2010 at the absolute least, and with Honda already figuring out their main issues (the same way Ferrari did in 2014) and being able to work on them, the choice seems relatively obvious to me.
They clearly need a better main team than McLaren though. At this rate, the team's going to crash and burn horribly if Ron doesn't leave the sport soon.

Is there really going to be "Renault Lotus - Mercedes" with a Renault engine next year?
Is it really that hard to just let them change the name?
>>64008925
i think they mean the car has until now been designed for a mercedes pu, so they have had to alter it. shouldn't be hard - the 2014 e22 had a renault pu.

ghosn basically confirmed to genii months ago that they had 100% intent to buy out lotus, and in the event that the deal for some reason could not go through, renault would provide any reimbursement needed to offset financial losses caused by ending sponsorships or whatever during that period (isn't business fun?)
so either outcome would be a win for genii and thereby enstone

renault didn't want to be associated with red bull, red bull saw a marketing opportunity and snapped it up.
>>64022282
>Why did Red Bull rebrand a renualt engine?
Probably a few reasons; one is that they're no longer the works team for Renault. Second, Renault re-negotiated the branding to reduce sponsoring RB, so that the team has to pay them more. Third, Renault doesn't want its name on the RB team, in case their engine is shit again, and the team decides to mouth off about it.
I think it was more a Renault decision than an RB decision.

Not really. He was the best newcomer, and while his accident was, unfortunately, his fault, the amount of bad luck that he had has almost never been seen before in F1.
Ricciardo also still has a good career ahead of him. People just fail to realize that there's nothing wrong if you can't match the level of Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton or pre-2014 Raikkonen, as every single one of those is hugely underrated due to all the nostalgia for the past eras.

Not because of the engine.
2006: It took a huge bout of bad luck for Ferrari (Japan 2006) and a far better chassis for that to happen.
2010: The RB6's chassis was so dominant that Vettel should've won by over a hundred points, despite Ferrari having a better (and bulletproof) engine. Instead, Red Bull's own inability to reel in Webber, coupled with the obscene number of engine failures for Vettel relative to Webber's total lack of misfortune, allowed Alonso to stay in the fight. Newey and Vettel won that season, not Renault.
2012: See 2010, just with the F2012 being marginally better in every way than the RB8 in Malaysia, from Spain to Singapore, as well as in Abu Dhabi and Brazil. Vettel won that season, not Renault.
Spain 2012: Alonso lost through being outskilled by Maldonado in one of the few occasions where the Williams was fast. Once again, the Ferrari engine was better that weekend.
2014: Caterham developed their car a little, whereas Marussia stuck with their Australia spec car from the first race of 2014 to the last race of 2015. Quite critically, Marussia also had a better car than Caterham until Monaco, which is exactly the reason why Tony Fernandes pulled the plug.
>>64026916
There's an autosport article somewhere on the v8 era engines. Iirc the Renault was by a (small, 10-15 HP) margin the least powerful but very driveable, with the cosworth the roughest and peakiest but most powerful, with Honda/Toyota/merc/ferrari/BMW somewhere in between. Lest we forget, in later years the Renault was also afflicted with some recurring reliability issues, such as the alternators being fragile junk even in the leading RBs.
In the first turbo era Renault were an absolute shambles and cost themselves (and prost/senna) multiple titles. The only era Renault actually stood out as being the best, or nearly there was the early v10 era - say from 91-96.
>>64026830
>>06-13
>they were shit at that one
which is why they won 5 of 8 championships in that period, right?
renault were always within 15hp of the most powerful engines in that era, usually less than 10
>>64026941
He can always just leave. His contract runs out at the end of the year I believe, and with Raikkonen's contract being in the same state, Ricciardo has a good shot at joining Ferrari, which are in a very good position right now. I don't think he's a Ferrari guy, but then I thought the same about Mansell and yet he greatly cherishes his time with the team.
The issue with that, however, is that I don't see him beating Vettel in a rematch.

>>64027030
Except I'm not doing that at all. I'll spell it out for you:
>10-15hp deficit
>very driveable
>ancillaries have suspect reliability
So, they have an insignificant power deficit that's offset by super progressive power delivery (which played hugely to newey's strengths) yet in later years reliability suffered. What this means is that at worst the Renault v8 was a low-middle tier engine but that with the right chassis, it could shine.
At no point am I suggesting that a 10hp power shortfall renders the whole thing shit, but neither was it the best.

>2006: It took a huge bout of bad luck for Ferrari (Japan 2006) and a far better chassis for that to happen.
Renault also had one engine failure (but that's because it was shit and totally not "bad luck"). Alonso also had to retire in Hungary 2006 because of a loose wheel.
>2010: The RB6's chassis was so dominant that Vettel should've won by over a hundred points, despite Ferrari having a better (and bulletproof) engine. Alonso lost that one because he couldn't overtake (the super duper underpowered) the Renault on the longest straight of the season. Lol.
Isn't it just amazing that the Renault engine ALWAYS manages to be in a top chassis? It can't be that the engine was actually the best one, no. It was just luck. Just like it was luck that from the 10 championship winning cars that Newey built, 9 were powered by Renault. Just a coincidence, I'm sure.

>Alonso lost that one because he couldn't overtake (the super duper underpowered) the Renault on the longest straight of the season. Lol.
One event that cost him 6 points has nothing on the almost 100 points that Vettel lost because of the Renault engines earlier in the season. I smell delusion.
>Just like it was luck that from the 10 championship winning cars that Newey built, 9 were powered by Renault.
Good thing his Williams era was the one time in recent years that the Renault was considered strong enough to be one of the defining championship-winning parts of those cars. And yes, I'm sure those victories in 2010-2013 have absolutely noooothing to do with Newey or Vettel at all and that Renault were the deciding factor.

>>64027096
I expect an apology. Regarding the early v10 era it also must be said that while dominant in terms of championships, the actual engine itself was something of a jack of all trades, with its trump card being usually bulletproof reliability. The Ferrari v12s were usually far, far more powerful (some estimates upward of 850-900hp, and they ran well over 1000rpm higher than any other engine at, for example, imola '95) but allied to unbelievably crap chassis and very peaky power delivery, and was never as torquey as those factory ford v8s the Benetton used, which surely (obviously allied to the briatore traction control and senna rip-ing) played a part in MSC's first title.
>>64027586
>the briatore traction control
No such thing. It was launch control, which is very different in terms of impact on race pace.
>>64027625
Sauce? I remember it being a hidden menu that literally said "traction control", but anything new is good. Iirc even verstappen came out and said his then-teammate was using it.
>>64027625
No such thing? It's literally a form of traction control.
>>64027757
The implementation mechanism is the same, but the function call in the software would be very different, as would be its impact on race pace.
Launch Control, as a function, would only be useful under the specific input parameters of a race start. It required a specific function call, the procedure for which was a complicated combination of gear paddle, clutch and brake manipulations, and then ran the control program exactly once.
For it to function like Traction Control for more than a start procedure would be impossible, which is backed by the fact that LDRA categorically said no TC software was found.
>>64027643
The report of the findings by LDRA, the British firm that investigated the claims, was published on (I think) Motorsports.com.
The report clearly states that while a hidden 'Option 13' was found, it's function was Launch Control, not Traction Control.
Also, the LC was not proved to have been used in any races. The same investigation however, found that McLaren was running a program that allowed automatic gear upshifts (also a banned driver aid), and conclusive proof that said program had been used in a race.
Thus, LDRA had the ability to detect the use of specific programs by teams in races, yet found no evidence of Benetton using LC.
They also categorically stated that a Traction Control program (ie one that controlled wheelspin over the full lap, rather than simply on the starting grid) was NOT found.
>>64027874
Thanks for that. There's a vid on yt of schu using LC at magny-cours, though obviously as you said it'd be impossible to prove.
Wasn't the McLaren thing due to Grouillard complaining publicly that his usual Lola car didn't change up by itself?
>>64027934
That's what revealed the suspicions, but LDRA found actual evidence of use, from what I've read, in the race at Imola.
Also, Larini ratted out the Ferrari engine mapping which simulated TC. What a moron.
>>64027934
Also, regarding this:
>though obviously as you said it'd be impossible to prove.

To Ferrari replacing Gimi
>>64035598
Highly unlikely.

Otherwise he will be signed by Renault as their number 1 driver and develop their 2017 car around him.

britbro(s) too. considering he's a rookie, jumped into a car he hadn't driven before, he's done very well.
stevens has not stood out against him at all. and stevens is about 5 foot 1, so has a height and weight advantage. merhi is a fucking guant compared to stevens and did relatively well, given the chassis favoured stevens more.
>>64036814
Alex Rossi is 6'1". Merhi is 5'10".

ricciardo has a contract with red bull for 2017. if verstappen stays a red bull driver, one of kvyat and ricciardo have to leave red bull racing for verstappen to make the step up in 2017 or 2018.
autosport.com/news/report.php/id/122156/red-bull-announces-infiniti-split
Well there goes the Infiniti engine idea
>>64046646
What idea? Were they supposed to call the engines TAG Heuer Infiniti?
>>64046682
No, but some suggested Infiniti might put some money in to help build the engine
>>64046646
So explain me something, /f1/:
Why the fuck did Red Bull drop the name Renault and branded the engine Tag Heuer if its going to be exactly the same engine as the Renault works team?
I remember CH saying Renault was asking something like 30M for the engines, is it that RB didn't want to pay so they made this agreement to get the engines cheaper or something? I seriously don't see any advantage for Red Bull in just changing the name. Surely it wasn't Tag that came asking to name the engine after them.
>>64048851
some kind of contrived sponsorship deal, relationship breakdown with Renault, something something money, idk
>>64048851
for marketing reasons. the renault brand won't get dragged through the dirt when an engine blows up or doesn't have enough power to get race wins.
>>64049236
Frankly, if I was Mateschitz I'd rather pull out of F1 than let Renault get away with the kind of shoddy work they've been doing for the last 6 years.
>>64049236
Not by RB anyway, now it'll be a full scale Renault fuck up when the Toro Rossos are blowing past them
>>64049529
I think RB would have sent Newey to Italy and changed the team name already if they weren't so afraid of Ferrari kidnapping him while he was there.
You know, I was thinking of something. I was rewatching Hungary 2015, and I remember Hamilton bitiching about Rosberg not moving out of the way.
I wonder if after that the team sort of yelled at Nico over that.

What is that thing Brundle keeps talking about Constantine effect?
..when cars get close in a corner. I never understood that word and never heard it outside f1.
>>64055819
In physics, the accordion effect occurs when fluctuations in the motion of a travelling body causes disruptions in the flow of elements following it. This can happen in road traffic, foot marching, bicycle racing, and, in general, to processes in a pipeline. These are examples of nonlinear processes. The accordion effect generally decreases the throughput of the system in which it occurs.
The accordion effect in road traffic refers to the typical decelerations and accelerations of a vehicle when the vehicle in front decelerates and accelerates. These fluctuations in speed propagate backwards and typically get bigger and bigger further down the line, decreasing the throughput of road traffic.
The accordion effect is known by various aliases such as the 'slinky effect' or the 'Concertina effect', or the 'string instability'.
-Wikipedia
>>64055819
Concertina effect. Cars appear closer together through a corner in physical distance even though they are the same time apart.

>>64057016
I found myself watching NBC Sports instead of acestreaming Sky for the last 3-4 races. Im so sick of the Hamilton montages and bias, its stomach turning.
>>64057016
My god was that bad. Like does he even know how biased he sounds? Oh Hamilton didn't win, this is boring, you need to compromise Nico for him. I bet in 2016 he'll be starting out the year saying the Mercedes needs to favor their "Number 1 Driver: Hamilton"
