dude came in the gym this morning claiming to be advanced and tried to do some light sparring. declined head gear and started trying too hard during warm ups to impress everyone.
i got paired up with him and he gave me a warning that he 'goes hard.' he then charged in with some some decent combos and got me walking back a little bit but then i just planted my feet and practiced dodging/blocking after he gassed out.
next round i light him up with cheeky high/low combos and mix in some jabs when he drops his hands. next round he asked to sit out and i give him a nice pat on the back.

Tried out this new gym earlier today, I've been training for a long time so I was quite honest with the guys there and let them know I'm pretty experienced so no need to take baby steps with me. They really didn't seem to like this, despite how polite I was about it, and the owner demanded I get in their cage for some heavy sparring with their top student, without head gear.
This guy gets in the cage, out of shape, wheezing, full on neckbeard, quietly asks me to go easy on him as it's been a hard day. I sense a sad story here so I let him touch me up a bit in the first round, figure I'll just use some technique and point score throughout.
After a couple of rounds, he looks over at the owner, who doesn't look impressed at all and walks off. "sorry man I need a quick break" he said panting
I go over to pat him on the back, "hey man you did good out there, I've been training for years so don't be too hard yourself"
"yeah? well my dad doesn't think so" he said looking over in the direction of the owner
I realised at this point that this guy hadn't really trained ever and his Dad was obviously embarrassed by him and forced him to start at his gym.
He poured his heart out to me, told me about the abuse he received as a kid and how he never had any friends at school just enemies.
"But things have been getting better lately, sometimes you're lucky to stumble upon a community that shares your pain and interests"
That was pretty weird, I thought, as he stood up to leave. "man you really fucked me up" he said walking away "I hope this doesn't mess me up for work later"

The real issue with fighter pay these days is the lack of their own sponsorships. I forget exactly who, I think it might have been Benson Henderson, said he went from earning about 60k a fight from sponsorships to making 15k. That's a huge chunk of cash he's missing out on.
Granted, middling fighters wouldn't make nearly as much sponsorship money, but I can pretty much guarantee it's more than the 2.5k they'd get from Reebok.

UFC is about the best fighters fighting the best fighters. There is a heavy value on fighters climbing up a ranking system. It emphasizes sport and competition over entertainment value.
Pride is more akin to professional wrestling. It emphasizes entertainment more than anything. The focus was more on building mythos and entertainment value around its top fighters. The superstars of the organization are the most entertaining ones. It was filled with fixed fights, ridiculous mismatches and freak show fights.
Other organizations are essentially just the "minor leagues" of MMA. The major exception being Bellator, which is a mixture of both minor league MMA and entertainment MMA. The meat of a typical Bellator card would be minor league MMA fights with the head lining fight being Kimbo or some other memer.

The way I see Ronda is that she's dumped all her time training into offense, and none into defense. I think Will Brooks said that Ronda's how you end up when you just spend all day on the heavy bags.
