Actually here's a thought. Since we're playing make believe and pretending that the NCAA has taken back enough control to reorganize the conferences, what if we had 8 conferences? No more independents, 16 teams separated into 2 divisions per conference. Each team plays the other 7 teams in their conference, plus at least 2 teams from the other division, then 3 open games for traditional rivals. No FCS teams allowed unless its a preseason scrimmage that doesnt count towards your record.
The 8 conference champs are seeded into an 8 team Playoff.
