i don't think DJ's mechanics are that bad at all. They said Dwight shoots 80% in practice, so DJ probably shoots like 60-70%. It's just his mental toughness. I think in practice, most players shoot mid 80s to mid 90s, but in games that lowers. Some people have better mechanics so they can compensate for small mistakes from pressure, such as stephen curry, or some probably hit about as well or slightly below in practice because they are mentally tough at the FT line (Derozan).
DJ though, he probably hits just around 70-80%, but he's so mentally weak that he just can't convert in the games.
What happened is probably DJ used to genuinely shoot at a 40-50% clip in practice, but he was so used to shooting badly that when he improved his mechanics he shot about the same because of the pressure (I would say a similar thing happened to LeBron, but to a lesser degree, since his FT% never went up the last few years despite improving his mechanics, although they did improve from the first few years after practice).
You see all these sweaty big men like Shaq, DJ, Dwight, etc, who were shooting shitty all their life because of their size, and then when they are taught to shoot despite their size, they just crumble under the pressure. Never seen a sweatier looking man at the FT line than Shaq...until now. DJ looks worse and worse every game.

The way I see it the NBA has four distinct eras and to compare between them is silly. There's the pre-shot clock era, the shot clock era, the three point era, and the zone defense/no handcheck era.
Milan is the GOAT of the pre-clock era. Wilt and Russell are the GOATs of the post-clock/pre-3 era. Jordan, Magic, and Bird are the GOATs of the 3 era.
