I could argue for the previous Chase format where it wasn't a playoff format, because overall points were still a part of the last 10 races in determining the winner of the title.
The new format leaves behind the tradition that consistency means something in favor of winning one or two races trumps all. Kyle would never have been in contention this year in older formats because he missed too many races. That isn't championship material to me.
I understand they want to boost ratings (how have ratings even been with the whole Kenseth/Logano rivalry anyways), but your sports roots are being buried and it's not even the same thing anymore to me and honestly, I haven't even paid attention this year mostly because it's just not interesting anymore, even with the playoff format of the past few years.

Basically, it's the 2003 Truck Series Championship, final race at Homestead. There are 3 contenders: Brendan Gaughan, Ted Musgrave, and Travis Kvapil. Musgrave's owner, Jim Smith, enters 2 or 3 extra trucks in the race as an "insurance policy". One of them ends up taking Gaughan out, Gaughan is understandably pissed.
Musgrave was battling cancer that year and I kinda wanted him to win, but Kvapil won after NASCAR blew the whistle on Musgrave for jumping a late race restart or something.
